English abstract

Speech presented at the Opening Ceremony of the 75th IFLA Congress, Milan, August 23-27, 2009. How can libraries use their specific skills to make themselves fundamental in the digital age? Libraries must add an educational aspect to their traditional role of supplying information. Knowledge Society needs responsible citizens who acquired the skill of information competence. Libraries should support the principle of Open Access. Libraries create futures: building on cultural heritage is the theme of the Congress. The term future is plural because the world is plural. And plurality means diversity: plurality and diversity, or multiculturalism, has always been ensured by libraries in the name of tolerance and respect for ideas, religious beliefs, and cultural systems.

Discorso presentato all’Opening Ceremony del 75. Congresso IFLA, Milano, 23-27 agosto 2009. Come possono le biblioteche usare le proprie specifiche competenze ed esperienze per essere un punto di riferimento anche nell’era digitale? Le biblioteche devono aggiungere un aspetto educativo al proprio ruolo tradizionale nel fornire l’informazione. La Società della conoscenza ha bisogno di cittadini responsabili ed emancipati che abbiano acquisito le necessarie competenze informative. Le biblioteche dovrebbero sostenere il principio dell’open access. Libraries create futures: building on cultural heritage è il tema del Congresso. Il termine futuro è al plurale perché il mondo è plurale. E pluralismo significa diversità: pluralismo e diversità, o multiculturalità, sono sempre stati assicurati dalle biblioteche in nome della tolleranza e del rispetto delle idee, delle credenze religiose e dei sistemi culturali.
