English abstract

This paper reviews the opportunities and challenges that are presented to educators, employers and professional associations by the evident changes in the information sector. It highlights the relationship between participation in continuing education and personal and organisational success. It examines issues raised by current provision. Finally it discusses how the library and information profession might underpin a culture of lifelong learning. Earlier versions of parts of this paper were presented at conferences in Lisbon in September 2007, and in Abu Dhabi in February 2008.
