English abstract

The purpose of this work is to analyze the theoretical foundations of the concept present in articles of Brazilian researchers in the field of information and knowledge organization. The proposal aimed to compare, systematically, the discourses about the concept and systems of concepts in this area. The approaches were performed through the analysis of scientific literature on the subject. It is assumed that the researchers develop their discourses based on a set of theoretical and methodological influences that identify them with a particular line of thought. In scientific space, therefore, an article is not a solitary entity, but it participates, along with other items, in the whole literature on a topic. The research universe was composed of Brazilian on-line journals of Information Science from the period 1972-2009. It was onoticed that what predominates in methodological studies are the Analytical Theory of Dahlberg’s Concept, Ranganathan’s Theory of Faceted Classification, Wüster’s General Theory of Terminology of and Guarino’s Ontology. In theoretical articles the Communicative Theory of Terminology and Socioterminology predominate. It was also noted that many articles have uncritically adopted the positivist model, without questioning their philosophical and theoretical bases. The conclusion is that the area of Information and Knowledge Organization must critically discuss the different theoretical and methodological proposals on the concept, comparing the positivist perspective with the pragmatic approaches of the Communicative Theory of Terminology and Socioterminology.

Portuguese abstract

O objetivo do artigo é apresentar os fundamentos teóricos sobre o conceito presentes em artigos de pesquisadores brasileiros de organização da informação e do conhecimento. A proposta visou comparar, de forma sistemática, os discursos produzidos sobre o conceito e os sistemas de conceitos, nessa área. A identificação e a discussão das abordagens foram realizadas por análise da produção científica sobre o tema. Assume-se, neste trabalho, que o pesquisador tece seu discurso a partir de um conjunto de influências teórico-metodológicas que o identificam com determinada corrente de pensamento. No espaço científico, portanto, um artigo não é uma entidade solitária, mas participa, junto com outros, do conjunto da literatura sobre um tema. O universo de pesquisa foi constituído de artigos de revistas brasileiras on-line de ciência da informação, do período 1972-2009. Por meio da análise de citações e de conteúdo dos artigos selecionados, foi possível observar que convivem na área tanto as abordagens dogmáticas quanto as de natureza crítica. Nos estudos de natureza metodológica e operacional, predominam a Teoria Analítica do Conceito, de Dahlberg, a Teoria da Classificação Facetada, de Ranganathan, a Teoria Geral da Terminologia, de Wüster e as Ontologias, de Guarino. Em artigos teóricos, predominam a Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia e a Socioterminologia. Observou-se, também, que muitos artigos adotam os modelos propostos pelas correntes positivistas de forma acrítica, sem questionar as bases filosóficas e teóricas subjacentes. Concluiu-se que aárea da organização da informação e do conhecimento deve discutir criticamente as diferentes propostas teóricometodológicas sobre o conceito.
