English abstract

This study is aimed to increase the knowledge about some aspects of the information behavior regarding selection and usage of bibliographic databases –BDB-, of students conducting theses in master and Phd. programs. The study was based on the Information Seeking Process -ISP- Model proposed by Kuhlthau. Based on the ISP Model, the instruments were developed to research about the following aspects: knowledge of databases and students' skills and attitudes in the usage of BDB. The research results showed that the understanding of the necessity of information signicantly affects the selection and usage of databases. It was also evident that the iterative nature of information searches depends on factors such as prior user's knowledge or skills when using the BDB. One of the main conclusions of this study was the corroboration of the initial assumption: the databases usage is determined by subject's internal aspects such as a conscious and formal information need and less by external and intrinsic aspects of the databases

Spanish abstract

El objetivo de este estudio es ampliar el conocimiento sobre algunos aspectos relacionados con el comportamiento informativo en la selección y uso de las bases de datos bibliográficas [BDB], de los alumnos que se encuentran realizando tesis de grado en maestría y doctorado. El estudio tomó como base el modelo Information Seeking Process (ISP) propuesto por Kuhlthau, a partir del cual se desarrollaron los instrumentos para indagar sobre el conocimiento de las bases de datos, las destrezas y las actitudes de los estudiantes en el uso de las BDB. A través de los resultados obtenidos se observó que la comprensión de la necesidad de información incide de manera importante en la selección y en el uso de las bases de datos. También se hizo evidente que la naturaleza iterativa de las búsquedas de información depende de factores tales como los conocimientos o habilidades previas que tenga el usuario en el uso de las BDB. Una de las conclusiones que este estudio arrojó fue la comprobación del supuesto del que partió la investigación: el cual decía que el uso de las bases de datos por parte de los estudiantes está condicionado por aspectos internos al sujeto, como una necesidad de información consciente y formal, y obedece menos a aspectos externos como factores intrínsecos de las bases de datos.
