English abstract

For the first time in its history, the Texas Library Association reached beyond its state borders to promote reading, literacy, and the value of libraries. By special invitation of the organizers of the Eighth International Book Fair of Monterrey (IBFM), TLA connected with the public of Monterrey, Mexico during the nine day fair, held September 26 to October 4, 1998. With an estimated attendance of over 150,000 people, the fair provided a cultural highlight for the entire state of Nuevo León. The fair, an annual Mecca for book buying and selling, offered TLA a chance to bring attention to the universal need for stronger libraries and to collaborate with librarians and library school students in Mexico. The TLA thanks some librarians from Monterrey who lent their support in organizing and staffing the booth, and mobilizing the Monterrey library community, particularly our special thanks to Zapopan Muela.

Por primera vez en su historia, la Asociación Texana de Bibliotecas (TLA) llegó más allá de sus fronteras estatales para promocionar la lectura, alfabetización, y el valor de las bibliotecas. Mediante invitación de los organizadores de la 8a Feria Internacional del Libro de Monterrey (Nuevo León, México) (FILM), la TLA se conectó con el público de Monterrey durante los 9 días que duró la feria, del 26 de septiembre al 4 de octubre de 1998. Con una asistencia estimada en 150,000 personas, la feria proveyó un gran realce cultural para todo el estado de Nuevo León. La feria, la Meca anual para la compra y venta de libros, ofreció a la TLA una oportunidad de llamar la atención de la necesidad universal de tener bibliotecas más fuertes y de colaborar con bibliotecólogos y estudiantes de bibliotecología en México. La TLA agradece a algunos bibliotecólogos quienes dieron su apoyo en organizar y estar como personal voluntario en el stand (puesto) de la TLA, y en mobilizar a la comunidad bibliotecaria, particularmente la TLA le da las gracias especialmente a Zapopan Muela.
