English abstract

Book indexes are intended to allow the location of information through three elements that characterize them: a phrase or expression that summarizes part of the text, the locators (page number), and the arrangement in alphabetical order. For decades we have specific rules for the production and presentation of indexes. However the use of these standards only appears to be generalized among publishers of Anglo-Saxon countries. With the widespread expansion that is occurring in the provision and use of electronic books between individuals and academic institutions, it seems that in these new environments, a quality index can be an essential tool for fast and efficient access to information. Thus, we analyze the curriculum and, in particular, the subjects focused in indexing taught in the degrees of Library and Information Science in Spain and Brazil, to locate content related to the teaching of the production and publication of book indexes. Secondly, we intend to survey teachers who teach subjects related to this content to know their opinions about the need to incorporate this matter in academic curricula.

Los índices para libros tienen como único propósito permitir la localización la información mediante tres elementos que los caracterizan: una frase o expresión que sintetiza parte del texto, localizadores (el número de folio) y el orden alfabético. Desde hace varias décadas disponemos de normas específicas para la elaboración y presentación de índices si bien su uso solamente parece estar generalizado entre las editoriales de países anglosajones. Aunque con la expansión generalizada que se está produciendo de los libros electrónicos entre particulares e instituciones académicas parece que un índice de calidad puede ser una herramienta imprescindible en estos nuevos entornos para un acceso rápido y eficiente a la información. Así pues, pretendemos analizar los planes de estudio y particularmente, las asignaturas dedicadas a la indización impartidas en las titulaciones de Biblioteconomía y Documentación en España y Brasil para localizar contenidos relacionados con la enseñanza en la elaboración y publicación de índices. Y en segundo lugar, encuestar a profesores que imparten asignaturas relacionadas con este contenido para conocer su opinión sobre la necesidad de incorporar esta materia a los curricula académicos.
