English abstract

A historical overview of the foundation and management of libraries in the current Argentine territory is provided. The history of conventual and Jesuit libraries, the Public Library of Buenos Aires, is narrated, and the popular libraries inspired by Sarmiento that promoted mass access to reading are discussed. Different management strategies of libraries are described, starting with Paul Groussac with the Brunet classification and the modernization process with the Dewey decimal classification since the 1930s.

Se realiza un panorama histórico de la fundación y gestión de las bibliotecas en el actual territorio argentino. Se narra la historia de las bibliotecas conventuales, jesuítas, la Biblioteca Pública de Buenos Aires, para detenerse las bibliotecas populares de inspiración sarmientina que fomentó el acceso masivo a la lectura. Se narran distintas estrategias de gestión de las bibliotecas desde Paul Groussac con la clasificación Brunet y el proceso de modernización con la clasificación decimal de Dewey desde la década de 1930.
