English abstract
The objective of this study is to identify works in the field of Library Science related to collection development in the bibliography of Jacques-Charles Brunet (1860-1865) in order to identify the respective theories and practices of the authors mentioned in the work who dealt with collection development in centuries prior to the 20th century, correlating them with contemporary theories and practices. The corpus was formed by 16 works among the oldest ones mentioned by Brunet. The corpus was analyzed according to the qualitative method of Discursive Textual Analysis. Among the results, it was verified the existence of works prior to the 19th century that present many aspects related to the collection development process. Considerations of authors were observed about the usefulness, quality, “enrichment” and “growth” of collections and the knowledge necessary to deal with these collections, among other practical aspects typical of the collection development process: institutional mission, level of collections, selection criteria, among others.
