English abstract

The process of control is a necessary component of management in order to maximise library resources and services. Based on the premise both that the public library must tailor its services to the needs of the users and be accountable to the community at large, the librarian must implement adequate control measures to collect data and assess results with a view to informing decision making and demonstrating the efficiency of the library. This task is important for the survival of both the institution and the profession in times of financial restriction and accountability of public services. El proceso de control es un elemento necesario de la gestión para optimizar los recursos y servicios de la biblioteca. Partiendo del planteamiento de que la biblioteca pública debe enfocar sus servicios hacia los usuarios y rendir cuentas de sus actividades ante la comunidad, el bibliotecario debe ejercer las medidas de control necesarias que permitan recoger datos y evaluar resultados que informen la toma de decisiones y demuestren la eficacia de la biblioteca. Esta labor es importante para la supervivencia de la institución y de la profesión en un entorno de restricciones económicas y justificación de servicios públicos.
