Il World Wide Web ha cambiato le modalità con le quali le biblioteche offrono i loro servizi, ha abbattuto i muri fisici delle biblioteche di carta, permettendo la creazione di nuovi ambienti informativi nei quali il processo comunicativo evolve nello scambio di oggetti digitali. E' la nuova società dello scambio, laddove per oggetti digitali si intendono le risorse elettroniche che risiedono lungo la Rete: programmi, testi, pagine Web, archivi di dati, cataloghi di biblioteche (OPAC), fotografie, filmati, documenti sonori, e tutte quelle informazioni che vengono messe a disposizione dai "serventi" della Rete per i "clienti" che vanno ad interrogare ciò che sta al di là della biblioteca fisica.

The World Wide Web has deeply changed the services of the libraries, has pull down the “paper library” and has also let new information environments, where the communication process is based on the digital objects.
This is a new global society where the exchange of information is the “core business” especially digital information such as electronic resources, web pages, softwares, files, OPAC, photos, audio documentation and so on.
All this different kinds of documentation are online on the WWW for all users that can obtain these electronic resources only by browsing the Net without going into the traditional library.
