Resumen

La gesti=F3n y an=E1lisis de los resultados de las b=FAsquedas = realizadas en=20 las bases de datos bibliogr=E1ficas posibilitan la organizaci=F3n = de la=20 informaci=F3n y el descubrimiento de sus patrones de = comportamiento.=20 Procite, un software dise=F1ado por el Institute for Scientific = Information=20 de los Estados Unidos, es precisamente un instrumento reconocido = por su=20 utilidad en este sentido. Se exponen las experiencias de la = biblioteca del=20 Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cient=EDficas en el uso del = mencionado=20 programa para el suministro de servicios de informaci=F3n con un = alto valor=20 agregado. Se comentan sus utilidades para los profesionales de la=20 informaci=F3n y la gesti=F3n de las bibliotecas cient=EDficas y = t=E9cnicas.=20 ProCite es una aplicaci=F3n ideal para analizar el comportamiento=20 cuantitativo de diversas variables en un flujo de informaci=F3n = espec=EDfica.=20

Abstract

The management and analysis of search results carried out in=20 bibliographic databases facilitate information set up and the = disclosure=20 of behavior patterns. Procite, a software designed by American = Institute=20 for Scientific Information, is precisely a widely accepted product = because=20 of its effectiveness. Experiences taken from the use of this = software to=20 provide high added value information services are exposed. The = software=20 usefulness for information service professionals and scientific = and=20 technical libraries management are commented. Procite is the best = choice=20 for the behavioral analysis of several variables in an specific=20 information flow.

Creado por el Institute for Scientific Information de = Philadelphia,=20 Estados Unidos, ProCite es un sistema personal de gesti=F3n de = referencias=20 bibliogr=E1ficas, dise=F1ado para crear bases de datos.

Concebido para ayudar a aquellas personas que manejan en su = trabajo una=20 gran cantidad de referencias,1 = permite=20 importar los resultados de b=FAsquedas realizadas en diferentes = bases de=20 datos bibliogr=E1ficas, as=ED como recuperarlas mediante alguna = porci=F3n de=20 informaci=F3n de inter=E9s y generar bibliograf=EDas en forma de = documentos para=20 cualquier tipo de procesador de textos.2 = Ofrece tambi=E9n la posibilidad de crear todas las bases de = datos que=20 se deseen y de abrir varias a la vez para facilitar el trabajo con = bases=20 de datos de tem=E1ticas diferentes.

En cada una de estas bases de datos, es posible incluir unas 30 = clases=20 distintas de referencias, entre ellas a revistas, libros, = art=EDculos de=20 revista, actas de congresos, diapositivas, tesis, entre otras. A = su vez,=20 ProCite puede generar referencias bibliogr=E1ficas de acuerdo con = los=20 estilos, citaci=F3n m=E1s conocidos: Vancouver, Harvard, APA, = Chicago, MLA,=20 adem=E1s de los establecidos por las revistas m=E1s importantes en = el entorno=20 cient=EDfico internacional.

El principal recurso de ProCite para los profesionales de la=20 informaci=F3n es la presencia de administrador de t=E9rminos (Term = Manager),=20 que permite la contabilidad de los datos que integran los = principales=20 campos que componen la base de datos (autores, palabras claves, = t=EDtulos de=20 publicaciones seriadas). Adem=E1s, dispone de un buscador = (browser) muy=20 potente que rastrea con rapidez y efectividad en todos sus campos. =

De este modo, resulta f=E1cil conocer los autores m=E1s = productivos, las=20 materias tratadas con mayor frecuencia y las revistas que m=E1s = publican=20 sobre el tema que comprende cualquier base de datos creada en = ProCite,=20 adem=E1s del comportamiento de la producci=F3n de art=EDculos por = pa=EDses, los=20 tipos de art=EDculos, entre otros factores.

Es precisamente esta caracter=EDstica la que convierte a = ProCite en una=20 herramienta muy =FAtil para realizar estudios m=E9tricos en = diferentes=20 especialidades y ramas de la ciencia, as=EC como para el dise=F1o = y prestaci=F3n=20 de servicios de alto valor agregado.
El presente trabajo = recoge=20 algunas de las experiencias obtenidas durante la explotaci=F3n del = Procite=20 para la prestaci=F3n de los servicios de informaci=F3n en la = biblioteca del=20 Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cient=EDficas (CNIC). Dichos = servicios=20 est=E1n dirigidos, tanto a los proyectos de investigaci=F3n del = centro como a=20 otras muchas instituciones cient=EDficas del pa=EDs.

El ProCite en los servicios de b=FAsqueda bibliogr=E1fica del = CNIC=20

El uso del ProCite en los servicios de b=FAsqueda = bibliogr=E1fica que=20 exigen un alto nivel de an=E1lisis de los datos recuperados, = debido al=20 car=E1cter estrat=E9gico que presentan para la toma de decisiones, = es una=20 formidable pr=E1ctica bibliotecaria dirigida a servir con = excelencia a sus=20 usuarios priorizados.

Dicha herramienta, aunque con un empleo experimental, ha = permitido, por=20 ejemplo, a la biblioteca del CNIC realizar un considerable = n=FAmero de=20 investigaciones bibliogr=E1ficas y de tendencias en diferentes = temas y=20 disciplinas cient=EDficas. Los temas tratados abarcan desde el = an=E1lisis de=20 la producci=F3n nacional de art=EDculos cient=EDficos hasta el = estudio del=20 comportamiento de disciplinas como la bioinform=E1tica y la = medicina=20 tradicional en el entorno biom=E9dico mundial.

Entre las investigaciones realizadas con Procite en el CNIC, = pueden=20 citarse los siguientes:

Aproximaci=F3n bibliom=E9trica a la medicina basada en = evidencia (un=20 estudio bibliom=E9trico realizado para el Centro Universitario = Jos=E9 A.=20 Echevarr=EDa, CUJAE.
La inform=E1tica biom=E9dica desde una perspectiva = bibliom=E9trica (un=20 estudio de tendencias presentado en la 7ma Jornada Cient=EDfica = del ICID,=20 Tecbiomed'2002).3
La acupuntura en la pr=E1ctica m=E9dica actual (un estudio = preliminar de=20 tendencias realizado para el Centro Provincial de Informaci=F3n = en=20 Ciencias M=E9dicas de Holgu=EDn (anexo 1).
La homeopat=EDa en Medline: estudio bibliom=E9trico (un = estudio=20 preliminar de tendencias realizado para el Centro Provincial de=20 Informaci=F3n en Ciencias M=E9dicas de Holgu=EDn) (anexo 2). =
Los ensayos cl=EDnicos cubanos publicados en revistas de = impacto=20 internacional (un estudio bibliom=E9trico realizado para la = Direcci=F3n=20 General del CNIC).4
El impacto de la bioinform=E1tica en las ciencias = biom=E9dicas (un=20 estudio de tendencias presentado en la 8va Jornada Cient=EDfica = del ICID,=20 Tecbiomed'2003).5 =

Como puede observarse, tres de los trabajos mencionados se = publicaron,=20 uno de ellos en la Revista Espa=F1ola de Documentaci=F3n = Cient=EDfica, una de=20 las m=E1s populares entre los profesionales iberoamericanos de las = ciencias=20 de la informaci=F3n.

El ProCite: una herramienta estrat=E9gica

Desde la =FAltima d=E9cada del siglo XX, las nuevas = tecnolog=EDas de la=20 informaci=F3n revolucionaron los servicios bibliotecarios. De = simples=20 almacenes de datos y documentos, las bibliotecas modernas = transitaron a=20 verdaderos centros de informaci=F3n cuya misi=F3n abarca, adem=E1s = de la=20 concentraci=F3n de documentaci=F3n actual y pertinente, la = generaci=F3n=20 informaci=F3n de especializada, de nuevos conocimientos, frutos = del proceso=20 de an=E1lisis de dicha documentaci=F3n, y cuyo objetivo principal = es influir=20 en la toma de decisiones estrat=E9gicas por parte de sus = usuarios.6,7

Para las bibliotecas especializadas en ciencia y = t=E9cnolog=EDa, se ha=20 hecho indispensable la creaci=F3n de servicios de informaci=F3n de = alto valor=20 agregado, que laboran en r=E9gimen de diseminaci=F3n selectiva de = la=20 informaci=F3n para investigadores, cuadros profesionales, = dirigentes y=20 coordinadores de proyectos de I+D. Dichos servicios, basados en = diferentes=20 t=E9cnicas, que van desde la b=FAsqueda retrospectiva convencional = en bases de=20 datos electr=F3nicas a la miner=EDa de datos en Internet, = requieren de=20 herramientas inform=E1ticas precisas y eficaces que faciliten el = an=E1lisis=20 informacional y reduzcan al m=EDnimo la cantidad de tiempo a = invertir en=20 dicho proceso.8

ProCite es una de estas herramientas. A pesar ser un sistema = gestor de=20 referencias bibliogr=E1ficas, al igual que otros software como = Endnote o=20 Reference Manager, la posibilidad de contabilizar los valores que=20 contienen los campos de sus bases de datos lo convierte en un = instrumento=20 ideal para evaluar el comportamiento cuantitativo de diversos = aspectos,=20 variables y valores en un flujo de informaci=F3n espec=EDfico. Con = ello, es=20 posible revelar las tendencias bibliogr=E1ficas que presenta = cualquier=20 disciplina cient=EDfica en un per=EDodo de tiempo determinado.

El empleo del ProCite por parte de los bibliotecarios es tan = importante=20 para ofrecer informaci=F3n con un alto valor agregado a sus = usuarios, como=20 para perfeccionar la actividad cient=EDfico- informativa de la = biblioteca.=20 ProCite, como otros gestores de referencias bibliogr=E1ficas, es = un=20 instrumento muy =FAtil, para la gesti=F3n de la informaci=F3n en = materia=20 bibliogr=E1fica.
El =E9xito conseguido con sus limitadas = aplicaciones en=20 los servicios de informaci=F3n de la biblioteca del CNIC, sienta = las bases=20 para la creaci=F3n, en un futuro inmediato, de un servicio de = informaci=F3n=20 especializado, una especie de consultor=EDa, que permita = satisfacer=20 necesidades m=E1s complejas de informaci=F3n de sus usuarios.
