¿Es posible que la Universidad de la República cumpla eficientemente sus fines sin una política institucional explícita de información, que no sólo involucre al sistema de bibliotecas? ¿Existen programas y planes concretos pensados a corto, mediano y largo plazo? ¿Podemos hablar de la existencia de un sistema de información universitario? La concepción actual de que la información constituye un recurso estratégico para el logro de las metas organizacionales, ¿se manifiesta implícitamente en las inversiones que realiza la Universidad de la República en recursos humanos, presupuestales y tecnológicos dedicados al análisis, tratamiento, uso y difusión de la información? Se brindan algunos elementos para responder a estas interrogantes, destacando desde ya la carencia de datos centralizados y actualizados de la realidad de las bibliotecas que integran la Universidad de la República.

Is it possible for the Universidad de la República (Uruguay) to accomplish with efficiency, its objetives, without an institutional information policy, that not only could involue the library system? Are there programs and plans organized in a short, medium and large term? Can we talk about the existence of a University information system? The present conception of which the information constitutes a strategic resource for the profit of the organizational goals, is it manifested within the inversions that the University spends in human resources, budgets and technology dedicated to the analysis, treatment, usage and diffusion of the information? Some elements offer to respond to be interrogative, emphasizing the deficiency of data updated of the reality of the university libraries of the Universidad de la República. The necessity of the existence of an institutional information policy in the context of a national information policy is analyzed. It is urgent a periodical diagnosis of the reality of the university libraries for the decision making.
