Abstract

O artigo aborda a trajetória da humanidade, relacionando-a ao avanço da ciência e da tecnologia e sua influência na sociedade contemporânea, também denominada sociedade da informação, do conhecimento, da aprendizagem. Destaca as funções da biblioteca pública ao longo do tempo, e sua sintonia com o permanente processo de mudança social, salientando o perfil, competências e contribuição do profissional da informação bibliotecário nesse contexto. Discorre sobre as atuais tecnologias de informação e comunicação, com ênfase na Internet, e seu reflexo no cotidiano dos cidadãos, realçando a questão da exclusão digital, um desafio a ser enfrentado pela América Latina.
[English abstract]
The article approaches the trajectory of the humanity, relating it it the advance of science and the technology and its influence in the society contemporary, also called society of the information, the knowledge, the learning. It detaches the functions of the public library to the long one of the time, and its tunning with the permanent process of social change, pointing out the profile, abilities and contribution of the professional of the information librarian in this context. It discourses on the current technologies of information and communication, with emphasis in the InterNet, and its consequence in daily of the citizens, enhancing the question of the digital exclusion, a challenge to be faced by Latin America.
