Abstract

La tradición oral es un medio de transmisión del saber ampliamente distribuido, incluso en sociedades urbanas altamente desarrolladas. Debido a que carece de soportes escritos que la preserven a través del tiempo, su supervivencia depende exclusivamente de la memoria de los transmisores y del uso adecuado de los lenguages (algunos minoritarios) que le sirven de medio. Al ser expresión de la diversidad lingüística y cultural, y el último recurso que muchos pueblos minoritarios poseen para perpetuar su historia y su patrimonio, la tradición oral es una parte importante de la memoria humana, y, como tal, debería ser protegida en bibliotecas. El artículo anota algunas ideas sobre la importancia de este tipo de comunicación, y los servicios que las bibliotecas podrían proveer para su conservación y difusión.

[English abstract]

Oral tradition is widely spread all over the world, including urban, highly developed societies. Lacking written records, its survival depends on the memory of people and on the accurate use of minority languages. As expression of linguistical and cultural diversity, and as the last way of minority peoples of expressing their history and cultural heritage, oral tradition is an important part of human memory, and it would become protected in libraries. The article outlines some ideas on the importance of this communication channel, and the services that libraries could provide for its conservation and diffusion.
