本文详细介绍了DC元数据的发展历史和取得的成果，并对其目前正在探讨的、可能对将来元数据的研究、开发和应用产生重大影响几个问题进行了简要的介绍。重点讨论了其发展过程中所经历的种种策略性的选择，以及DC元数据为什么会成为目前这种形态。作者希望了解这些背后的考虑能够有助于在应用中掌握元数据的灵魂，更全面、准确地应用元数据标准规范，灵活地实现数字图书馆应用系统的功能。
[English abstract]
This is a comprehensive introduction to DCMI (Dublin Core Metadata Initiative), its activities, metadata specifications and future directions. Many topics discussed during the history of DCMI on metadata developing and implementation are still repeated in the applications of Chinese Digital Library circle in recent years. The authors think that the experiences and expertise of DCMI can be a good reference for Chinese colleagues on metadata development, and to avoid reinventing the wheel.
