El modelo actual de comunicación científica está atravesando un momento de cambios profundos. Se presenta el modelo de archivos abiertos, actualmente en desarrollo en varios países centrales. El objetivo de esta iniciativa es facilitar la eficiente diseminación de la información académica a través de la construcción de archivos virtuales globales de literatura científica, de acceso libre e irrestricto a través de servidores web. El origen de este notable avance debe buscarse tanto en desarrollos tecnológicos en informática y telecomunicaciones, como en la necesidad de revertir el modelo de comunicación científica vigente, en el que la lentitud en la transferencia de resultados y el alto costo de las publicaciones periódicas es visto por muchos como un obstáculo a la diseminación de la información y, por ende, al avance de la ciencia. Se explican brevemente tres iniciativas que se están llevando a cabo en Estados Unidos que ha liderado esta innovación, a partir del primer emprendimiento con archivos abiertos en el Laboratorio Nacional de los Alamos, en 1991.

The current pattern of scholarly publishing goes throught times of dramatic changes. The model of open archives is being developed in several central countries. The aim of this initiative is the enhancement of the disemination of scholarly information, building huge virtual archives of scientific literature, with free and irrestricted access through Web servers. The roots of this remarkable improvement lie so much on technological developments in informatics and telecommunications, as well as on the need to change the traditional scientific communication model. The delay in transferring research results and the ever increasing cost of scholarly journals is perceived as an obstacle in the effective disemination of scientific results, and, therefore, to the progress of science.
Three initiatives are sketched, being implemented at present in the USA, who have pioneered this new model from the first e-print archive in Los Alamos National Laboratory, in 1991.
