Abstract

In 2005, the Cranbrook Public Library Board went to the public for the second time with a referendum to get a new library facility. In 2002, the previous referendum was only narrowly defeated in the regional district. This time, residents of RDEK Area C voted 60% in favour of the new library, with City of Cranbrook residents voting 88% in favour on November 19.

The CPL Board worked diligently with local governments, and many other groups, to make the yes vote a reality. Those involved in the planning process collaborated with regional and municipal governments, and listened to the public to develop a realistic option for the public to vote on.

This session covers the process of planning and implementing a successful referendum campaign, and lessons learned.
