Abstract
[Spanish abstract]: En América Latina existe una importante producción de las ciencias sociales, pero permanece poco visible (dentro y fuera de la región) debido a problemas de idioma y de distribución internacional de publicaciones en formato impreso.
La introducción de Internet y de la edición en línea, hace que esta producción pueda ser más visible para la comunidad académica internacional, y en América Latina diversas organizaciones han aprovechado esta oportunidad.
Las opciones elegidas muestran como la colaboración entre países, y particularmente entre bibliotecarios y editores, puede brindar soluciones innovadoras. El proyecto CLACSO utiliza un modelo de biblioteca digital como plataforma de edición para las revistas de sus centros asociados y este modelo ha resultado exitoso y, esperemos, sustentable en el tiempo.
[English abstract]: There is a strong history of social
science research within Latin America, but its
visibility (both within and outside the region) has
been low for reasons of language and print
distribution. The introduction of the Internet and
online publication makes this information potentially
more visible to the global research community, and
within Latin America several organizations have
undertaken to exploit this opportunity. The
approaches taken show how collaboration between
countries, and particularly between librarians and
publishers, can provide innovative solutions. The
CLACSO project uses a digital library model as a
publishing platform for its member journals and this
has provided a successful – and hopefully
sustainable – model.
