Abstract

The study opines that human ware is the most important component of an Automated Library and Information System (ALIS) which uses computers and communication technology for its functioning. The success of ALIS will depend on the knowledge, skills and aptitude of its staff. The functions that the human ware component of ALIS has to attend at different levels like overall management of the system, system development which includes system analysis and programming, computer operations including machine operations, data preparation, file maintenance and hardware maintenance, as well as the quantity and quality of human element required for these functions are discussed in detail. Qualifications to be fixed for selecting new staff, the status and scale to be provided at different levels, and the nature of training to be provided to the staff existing in traditional systems to enable them to handle the functions in the new scenario are also recommended. The study explains the need for revision of the syllabi of the library and information science courses incorporating ICT aspects and suggests a model syllabus for graduate and post graduate courses. Concludes by pointing out that the investment in manpower development is to be regarded as the most significant element in Automated Library and Information systems
