Apresenta a literatura publicada sobre a controvérsia: métodos quantitativos x métodos qualitativos. Identifica o posicionamento geral dos pesquisadores em Biblioteconomia e Documentação quanto à escolha dos métodos para suas investigações. Sugere a adoção de uma postura mais crítica frente ao caráter positivista das pesquisas, buscando favorecer o desenvolvimento teorético e a coerência com a realidade social em que estão inseridos usuários e informação.

Presents a review on the controversy: quantitative methods x qualitative methods, reported by Library Science's periodicals. Identifies the general attitude of researchers working with this science, concerning to their choices on investigative methods. Suggests a criticai approach in analysing and choosing methods to be adopted in orderto avoid positivistic tendency within the existing research works and to seek for theoretical development and connection with social environment enclosing information and users.
