English abstract

Web content management systems are used to create websites of high quality with content relevant to the present. Giving employees the opportunity to participate in creating, publishing and storing content and automation of processes leads to more efficient delivery of information. While such systems should be easy to use even for people with hardly any knowledge in programming, many employees still do not like working with a web content management system because they find it hard to use. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyse the usability of different web content management systems. To work out specific usability guidelines for web content management systems, different usability criteria have been identified by carrying out an initial literature research. After that, employees of different companies were interviewed by using a set of questions which had been created as the result of this research. In addition, people were asked to perform a daily task to show how the user interfaces are designed and which problems might occur. The results of the interviews are compared with the usability guidelines to find out how people feel when interacting with the user interface. There were also other aspects mentioned in the interviews, which show problems in organisation rather than real software mistakes. The findings are therefore grouped into software problems and organisational weaknesses and recommendations for improving usability are given in the report. The behaviour of web content management systems can further be investigated by using usability tests to find out severe usability problems of the specific solutions.
