English abstract

The year 2000 computer system compliance issue will inevitably influence several of the functions of the Academic Libraries. The talk will focus on 3 main areas: • the definition of the problem • the analysis of the potential consequences concerning: • embedded electronic systems, • operating systems and personal computers, • software used by the libraries • the presentation of the results of a research showing the level of readiness of: • main computer systems • academic libraries and • their main suppliers of software and hardware In the course of the speech an on-line test will be carried out, so that the level of compatibility of a PC can be defined. Methods of achieving and maintaining compliance with the use of software and hardware will also be compared. As the new millennium approaches, emphasis should be laid on the alternative emergency plans of action, so that a state of readiness is achieved "before 1/1/00".

Ορισμένες λειτουργίες των Ακαδημαϊκών Βιβλιοθηκών αναπόφευκτα θα αντιμετωπί­σουν πρόβλημα μη συμβατότητας των μη­χανοργανωμένων συστημάτων τους με την αλλαγή του αιώνα. Η εισήγηση θα εστια­στεί: • Στον προσδιορισμό του προβλήματος • Στην ανάλυση των επιπτώσεων: • στα Ενσωματωμένα ηλεκτρονικά συ­στήματα • στα Λειτουργικά συστήματα, στους προσωπικούς υπολογιστές, καθώς και • στα Εργαλεία λογισμικού των ακα­δημαϊκών Βιβλιοθηκών • Στην παρουσίαση αποτελεσμάτων έ­ρευνας που καταδεικνύουν το βαθμό ετοιμότητας: • των μεγαλύτερων μηχανογραφικών κέντρων • των Ακαδημαϊκών Βιβλιοθηκών και • των κυριότερων προμηθευτών τους σε λογισμικό και υλικό Στα πλαίσια της εισήγησης θα γίνει πραγ­ματικός έλεγχος προσωπικού υπολογι­στή, ώστε να καθοριστεί το επίπεδο συμ­βατότητας του. Παράλληλα θα συγκριθούν μέθοδοι επίτευξης και διατήρησης της συμ­βατότητας με τη χρήση τόσο του λογισμι­κού, όσο και του υλικού. Καθώς ο χρόνος πλέον είναι περιορισμέ­νος, θα δοθεί έμφαση στην κατάστρωση εναλλακτικών σχεδίων έκτακτης ανάγκης, για την εξασφάλιση της μέγιστης δυνατής ετοιμότητας "πριν την 1/1/00".
