Η παροχή της πληροφορίας σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή και η διανομή της μέσω του διαδικτύου (Internet) διευκολύνει την αναζήτηση της, κάνει άμεση την απόκτηση της και δίνει τη δυνατότητα της απομακρυσμένης πρόσβασης σε αυτή. Το ηλεκτρονικό υλικό, όμως, δεν παρέχεται δωρεάν και έχει μετατραπεί σε ένα εμπορεύσιμο αγαθό. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα η διαχείριση του να μην περιορίζεται μόνο στην αποθήκευση, την αρχειοθέτηση και την αναζήτηση αλλά να περιλαμβάνει και άλλες λειτουργίες, όπως είναι η παροχή ασφάλειας στα δεδομένα, ο έλεγχος της πρόσβασης σε αυτά και η προστασία των πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων. Για την διεκπεραίωση όλων αυτών των λειτουργιών είναι απαραίτητη η δημιουργία ενός ολοκληρωμένου συστήματος λογισμικού το οποίο θα αναλάβει τη διαχείριση της πρόσβασης των τελικών χρηστών στο ψηφιακό υλικό των προμηθευτών. Στο άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζουμε τη γενικότερη φιλοσοφία τέτοιων συστημάτων, σε συνδυασμό με τα αποτελέσματα πεδίου έρευνας η οποία έγινε στα πλαίσια του έργου CANDLE.

[English Abstract]
The provision of information in electronic form and its network distribution simplifies the process of searching and retrieval and enables the remote access to it. The electronic material, though, is not provided for. free - it has rather been considered as a commercial product. Thus, its management is not limited to storage, cataloguing and retrieval but it also includes security, access control management and copyright clearance. For these needs to be met, the design and implementation of information systems which can manage the access of the end users to the providers' digital content are required. In this paper, we present the broader requirements for such systems, along with the features of the IS, which the CANDLE project will deliver.
