Open Access digital institutional repositories have motivated a strong debate on electronic publishing in specialized literature. More focused on questions related to the so called Open Access Movement of the Scientific Information, they have raised discussions both in the context of the academy and the government and the industry (this related to the scientific publication work). It is subject, therefore, of constant concern of all the scientific community actors, to name scientific authors (researchers), publishers, scientific societies, funding agencies, libraries and access and service providers. The text deals with university institutional repositories focusing some of the main questions that guide the discussions of the subject. It emphasizes the impact of research aspects and motivation that certainly is part of their dissemination on the Web, and it reflects a scientific community reaction to the business model of the scientific publishing companies.

Repositórios institucionais digitais de acesso livre têm alimentado um forte debate na literatura especializada em publicações eletrônicas. Mais focados nas questões sobre o assim chamado Movimento de Acesso Livre à Informação Científica, têm levantado discussões tanto no contexto da academia quanto do governo e da indústria (esta, a voltada para o trabalho editorial de publicações científicas). É tema, portanto, da preocupação de todos os atores da comunidade científica, nomeadamente autores (pesquisadores), editores científicos, sociedades científicas, agências de fomento, bibliotecas acadêmicas e provedores de acesso e de serviços. O texto trata de repositórios institucionais de universidades, enfocando algumas das principais questões que norteiam a discussão do tema. Destaca os aspectos sobre os impactos da pesquisa, motivação que, certamente, está por trás de sua disseminação na Web, e que reflete uma reação da comunidade científica ao modelo de negócios das editoras científicas comerciais.
