English abstract

The current book analyzes the domain of the Cuban Higher Education, through the behaviour of the scientific production developed by universities and research institutions belonging to the Ministry of Higher Education during the period 2004-2006. The employed methodology expected the identification and analysis of different bibliometric and scientometric variables implicit in the processes of Science communication, and especially in articles published by mainstream journals covered by the Web of Science. The analysis of these variables offered a global vision of the research activity carried out by the Ministry of Higher Education, allowing the identification of the most successful and internationally visible institutions and research fronts, the evaluation of achievements and limitations during the studied period, and the planning of new strategies of scientific development for coming years.

Spanish abstract

La presente monografía analiza el dominio de la Educación Superior cubana, a través del comportamiento de la producción científica en las universidades e instituciones de investigación pertenecientes al Ministerio de Educación Superior durante el período 2004-2006. La metodología empleada pretendió la identificación y análisis de diferentes variables bibliométricas y cienciométricas implícitas en los procesos de comunicación de la ciencia, y particularmente en los artículos publicados en las revistas de corriente principal que componen el Web de la Ciencia. El análisis de estas variables brindó una visión global de la actividad investigativa realizada por el Ministerio de Educación Superior, al permitir identificar las instituciones y frentes de investigación más exitosos y visibles a nivel internacional, valorar los logros alcanzados y las limitaciones enfrentadas durante el período 2004-2006, y trazar nuevas estrategias de desarrollo científico para los años venideros.
