Abstract
[English abstract] Recent advances in information and communication technology is enabling researchers to store and share large amounts of data. Sharing data benefits advancement of science by facilitating collaborative research and enabling access to needed data obtained by other researchers without having to duplicate the research. In order to share data, certain principles and standards need to be adopted so that data can actually be stored and shared. Also, ways to protect privacy, security and proprietary knowledge need to be agreed upon. Various initiatives for data access and sharing have been developed by a number of research projects, especially those involving international co-operation. As a result of these, a need is recognised for genuine international initiatives to promote and adopt principles and standards for sharing of research data. This presentation discusses the recent initiatives by OECD and CODATA as well as the Global Information Commons for Science Initiative, GICSI, which attempt to promote and facilitate data sharing by researchers globally, and examines some issues involved in international data sharing.
