Abstract

Niniejsza praca zatytułowana "Publikacje Biblioteki Kongresu w Waszyngtonie z lat 1901 – 1938 w zbiorach Biblioteki Gdańskiej PAN" jest pierwszą częścią projektu: Anglicana i americana (XVIII w. - XX w.) w zbiorach Biblioteki Gdańskiej PAN. Stanowi ona prezentację wybranych americanów z zasobów Biblioteki Gdańskiej PAN. Zanalizowano tu jednolitą kolekcję Biblioteki Gdańskiej, zawierającą publikacje Biblioteki Kongresu w Waszyngtonie z lat 1901-1938. Dokumenty te stanowią zespół materiałów bibliotecznych Biblioteki Kongresu w Waszyngtonie, z pierwszych czterech dekad XX wieku, kiedy to funkcję dyrektora tej placówki sprawował w latach 1899 – 1939 Herbert Putman (ur. 1861- zm. 1955), pierwszy bibliotekarz, który uporządkował zastany tu księgozbiór. Zawartość tych americanów pozwala nam poznać pewien etap w rozwoju Biblioteki Kongresu oraz dowiedzieć się jakimi zasadami kierowano się w scalaniu i wzbogacaniu kongresowego księgozbioru, a także jakie mechanizmy stosowano w jego zarządzaniu (m.in. wprowadzenie Klasyfikacji Biblioteki Kongresu).

[English abstract]

The paper entitled The Publications of the Library of Congress in Washington (1901-1938) in the Gdansk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences constitutes the first part of the library project: Anglicana and Americana in the Gdansk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The text focuses upon a selected group of americana and examines this homogenous collection, containing the publications of the Library of Congress published in the former half of the 20th century. These publications make up a set of library materials produced at the time when Herbert Putnam (b. 1861- d. 1955) was the Library’s director (1899-1939). The analysis of these americana will let us get acquainted with both a particular period of time in the history of the Library of Congress and the mechanisms that were applied to unify, enrich as well as simply manage the Congress collection (by e.g. introducing the Library of Congress
Classification)
