Zakładając nowe czasopismo, redakcja zawsze zastanawia się m.in. nad metodami rozpowszechniania wiedzy na jego temat oraz sposobem znalezienia dobrych autorów, zapewniających odpowiednią liczbę submissions czy dobrych prac, które potencjalnie mogłyby być cytowane. Z drugiej strony wydanie każdego numeru to nie tylko ogromny nakład pracy, ale także niemałe wydatki, stąd pojawia się pytanie, w jaki sposób czasopismo ma na siebie zarabiać, szczególnie, gdy liczba prenumeratorów na początku w żaden sposób nie jest w stanie zapewnić jego bytu. Stąd właśnie pojawia się znana kwestia Pay for Preview. Jakie są wady i zalety tej metody? Wreszcie, czy Open Access to jedyny sposób na szybki rozwój czasopisma? Szczegółowa odpowiedź na te pytania i dokładna analiza tego niełatwego problemu, na przykładzie kilku znanych czasopism, będzie tematem niniejszego referatu.

When establishing a new journal, the editors always try to find the best methods to disseminate information about this title, consider how to find good authors in order to ensure an adequate number of submissions, and valuable works which would be cited. On the other hand, publication of each volume requires not only much work but also huge funds. This implies the question about the ways the publication would be funded, taking into account that, at least at the beginning, a relatively low number of subscribers would not be able to ensure its existence. As a solution sometimes appears a known concept “Pay for Preview”. Based on the examples of several famous journals, the paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of that concept, trying to find answers for the question if Open Access is the only way for a quick development of a journal.
