Abstract

This article discusses the market penetration of public libraries in Karnataka by comparing it with that of developed countries like USA and New Zealand, also compares the book buying habit of individuals in India with that in those countries, explains how books have become "inferior" goods of leisure/ entertainment industry and concludes by highlighting reluctance of public libraries in Karnataka to reach public at large, failure of Kannada publishing industry in selling books directly to individuals, but concentrating more on institutional and bulk purchases and finally, lack of systematic studies on reading habit leading to diverse and contradictory opinions and judgments.
