English abstract

This is the 2-page handout included in the Conference Handout for the 2009 B.C. Library Conference. The description of this pre-conference session that was included in the conference program is included below. Prepare yourself for a very interactive session. This is not a presentation. You will be working in groups and diversity will enrich the discussion. This is a participatory workshop to share knowledge and experience on how to identify gaps in one’s collective agreements and, with this knowledge, negotiate for better working terms. Library workers of all kinds are often the minority within bargaining units and, unfortunately, collective agreements often reflect this in disproportional representations of our needs. By working together with your fellow library workers from other workplaces, this pre-conference session will give you the tools to return to your respective bargaining units better informed regarding the rights that library workers can have within collective agreements and the ways that you can implement changes in your own collective agreement. Please bring a copy of your collective agreement to the pre-conference session.
