Abstract

[English abstract]
For over 300 years, the Library of the Serbian Orthodox Church is performing
the task of the Keeper of the Memory and the Holder of the Spiritual and
Cultural Continuity of its People. The Library emerged from the bosom of the
Serbian Orthodox Church, and its destiny was determinate by historical
events and versatile relation and interest of those being in charge of it and that way the Library remained out of the modern streams of the
Librarianship. With an insufficiently researched Holdings, without any
efficient instruments for Information - the Library is more a storage of
precious books, and we are guessing its importance more than we know. To
overcome this situation, a strategy should be conceived, which would regroup
the effort of the Church, as the owner, and the goodwill of Makers of
political decisions, to arrange the Library in a modern way and to put its
holdings to a complete disposal to users. Therewith, our oldest Library
would occupied the honorably place in Serbian Librarianship, where it
belongs.

Biblioteka Srpske pravoslavne crkve već tri stotine godina obavlja zadatak
čuvara pamćenja i nosioca duhovnog i kulturnog kontinuiteta svoga naroda.
Nastala je u okrilju Srpske pravoslavne crkve, a njenu sudbinu su određivale
istorijske prilike i promenljiv odnos i zainteresovanost onih koji su se o
njoj starali, tako je i ostala izvan savremenih tokova u bibliotekarstvu. Sa
nedovoljno istraženim fondovima, bez efikasnih instrumenata informisanja ona je pre svega magacin dragocenih knjiga, o čijem se značaju više nagađa
nego što se zna. Da bi se ovo stanje prevazišlo, trebalo bi osmisliti
strategiju koja bi objedinila napore Crkve, kao vlasnika, i dobru volju
donosilaca političkih odluka da se Biblioteka uredi na savremen način i
stavi na potpuno raspolaganje korisnicima. Tada bi naša najstarija
biblioteka mogla da zauzme u srpskom bibliotekarstvu počasno mesto koje joj
pripada.
