E-LISÖkonomische Aspekte wissenschaftlicher FachzeitschriftenGeorgFesslerauthor In this thesis economical aspects of scientific journals (print and e-journals) are reflected. At first, the history, the definition and the functions of scientific journals in the academic context are examined. The development of e-journals is traced and advantages and disadvantages are presented. Next, some considerations to economical characteristics of information goods are presented and the interactions of the authors, publishers, readers and libraries are set out. The supply side and the demand side of the scientific journals market are exposed. Special consideration is given to types of suppliers, market volume, costs of print and e-journals and various aspects of the behavior of libraries and individual subscriptions. Following this, it is exposed if the market of scientific journals is a monopoly. After that, prices and the rise of prices are examined and marketing strategies of the publishers (price and product differentiation, bundling and pay-per-view models) are discussed. Also, the profitability of some listed companies which publish scientific journals is highlighted. An alternative model which would result in an open access to e-journals is presented and discussed. Finally, the results of this thesis are summarized and some conclusions for libraries are drawn. BE. Information economics.HA.
