This paper deals with the duty of academic libraries that are founded in course of the missing information literacy. Academic libraries in Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian countries have an active role, the mediation of information literacy to students already have tradition. With the example of USA the development of information literacy will be highlighted and effective methods will be presented. In the following part the development in Germany and Switzerland will be analysed.
