The marketplace is offering different solutions; some are very expensive, others are quite inexpensive. This presentation describes the basic architecture and the main features of CMS with specific reference to their applications in universities and research centres. It is important that Italian librarians, in asserting their role as information architects, organizers, familiarize with the different CMS products in order to build their own solutions which better satisfy the information needs of their communities.
