abstract: Instruction in Library Use or the Need to Review the Concept of Library Training
University libraries have been actively training users over the past 30 years. What is known as "instruction in library use" has been interpreted in a variety of ways, from the basic library tour to structured, required credit courses included in the curriculum of the student's field of study. These ways share a common goal: to enable the student to fulfill his role as a student and to allow him to discover and use a number of reference resources that will help him produce research projects of a higher quality. This vision is outdated. The high performance use of information is now considered as a survival skill for individuals and organisations. The learning opportunities underlying the efficient use of information in a professional setting requires a redefinition of the basic concepts and the objectives of instruction in library use.
