The aim of this thesis is to create a quantitative overview of the current stock of audio and video materials in a selected number of institutions, and to show where the strengths and weaknesses, concerning digitalisation and long-term conservation, are. Another goal is to give a general overview of regional differences, how the institutions develop their collections, how the holdings are conserved for future availability and if they are available for everybody or for specific user-groups only. A summary at the end analyses the status quo of the selected institutions, and identifies problematic areas and future prospects in this field. The inquiry is concentrated on a selection of 110 archives, museums and collections all over Austria. The study was done by mail questionnaire, some with call back or additional personal interview.
In conclusion, it was found that a lot of institutions in Austria are not digitizing their holdings, some do not know about the importance of digitisation at all and the possibility of long-term preservation is not provided. A couple of institutions do not even know about the dimension of the audio-visual stock in their archive. In most of these cases, a shortage of staff and lack of financial aid are the reason for this situation.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">JH.
