| Abstract: | The paper briefly analyses the role that libraries may fulfill within societies where oral tradition is still the main mean of knowledge transmission, and where languages are seriously endangered. The author provides a complete set of concepts about the nature of oral tradition and the current situation of languages. Afterwards, he provides his own experience on development of library services in Latin American indigenous communities, in order to illustrate how libraries may evolve and be adapted in order to meet particular needs of disadvantaged patrons. |
| Other Abstracts: | Trabajo que tiene por objetivo analizar brevemente el rol que las bibliotecas deben cumplir dentro de las sociedades en las cuales la tradición oral es todavía el principal medio de transmisión de conocimiento y en las cuales los idiomas están seriamente dañados. El autor suministra una serie de conceptos acerca de la naturaleza de la tradición oral y la actual situación de los idiomas. Luego, provee su propia experiencia en el desarrollo de los servicios bibliotecarios en las comunidades indígenas de América Latina, de manera de ilustrar como las bibliotecas pueden evolucionar y adaptarse en orden a encarar necesidades particulares de patrones desventajosos |
