Abstract: Academic publishing is undergoing major changes as society transitions from print to electronic formats. An emergent trend for many academic journals is open access via the Internet. There are two main forms of open access: open access publishing where the articles or journal are freely available from the time of publication; and self-archiving, where authors submit a copy of their work to be made freely available on the web. This paper will discuss modern, open academic publishing systems and the changes these systems represent.
