| Abstract: | Since the opening of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in October 2002, the library has become one of the most important places for learning and research in the Middle East. Signs for the success are the number of media units (appr. 800.000), patrons (appr. 15.000), staff (appr. 2.000), training programmes (about 800 per year) and the quality of international conferences. Despite the high standard of architecture and technical equipment, in this paper problems of the aquisition unit, the standard of eaducation and the information policy in Egypt are discussed. |
| Other Abstracts: | Seit ihrer Eröffnung im Oktober 2002 hat sich die Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexand-ria, Ägypten) unter der Leitung des Generaldirektors Ismail Serageldin und der Leite-rin des Library Sector Sohair Wastawy zu einer der wichtigsten Bildungs- und Wis-senschaftseinrichtungen im Nahen und Mittleren Osten entwickelt. Der Erfolg der Bibliothek lässt sich u. a. an den Beständen (ca. 800.000 Medieneinheiten), der Zahl von Nutzerinnen und Nutzern (ca. 15.000), Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern (ca. 2.000), Fortbildungsveranstaltungen (jährlich ca. 800) und der Qualität der internationalen Konferenzen ablesen. Trotz der guten räumlichen und technischen Ausstattung sind hingegen auch bestehende Probleme, etwa in den Bereichen Bestandsaufbau und Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz, nicht zu übersehen, die in den sich in Entwicklung befindlichen politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen in Ägypten ihre Ursache haben. Der vorliegende Bericht beruht auf zwei Aufenthalten an der Bibliotheca Alexandrina in den Jahren 2006 und 2009, die mit Unterstützung des Network of Research Centres in Human Sciences on the Mediterranean Area (RAMSES II) bzw. von BI International durchgeführt wurden. |
