| Abstract: | We discuss technical problems in handling discrete data such as citation data. Using Kao’s citation data it is shown that splines can provide an everywhere differentiable description over the whole data interval. We find that citations to Kao’s Nobel Prize winning article follow the main developments of the field of fiber optics communication. |
