| Abstract: | Many information seekers -- and sometimes librarians themselves -- abandoned card catalogs and rushed to embrace the reach and simplicity of full-text search when Altavista, Google, and other search engines burst onto the scene. But the value of library classification systems and indexing of content by subjects did not suddenly expire. In fact, developments in library and information science in the middle of the 20th century show promise for overcoming the exasperating limitations of full-text search. Among those innovations, a model for knowledge organization called "faceted classification" is a quite natural fit for the computerized information environment. |
| Other Abstracts: | Alcuni ricercatori dell’informazione – e spesso i bibliotecari stessi – hanno abbandonato i cataloghi cartacei a favore della semplicità e ricercabilità dei full-text quando Altavista, Google e altri motori di ricerca sono apparsi in scena. Ma il valore dei sistemi di classificazione e l’indicizzazione per soggetto dei contenuti non è scomparso di colpo. Infatti, gli sviluppi in campo biblioteconomico e di scienze dell’informazione a metà del 20esimo secolo sembrano promettere la vittoria sulle limitazioni alla ricerca del full-text. Tra queste innovazioni, un modello chiamato classificazione a faccette sembra “fatto apposta per l’ambiente informatizzato”. |
