Abstract: This presentation illustrates open access strategies to scholarly literature, strategies which aim at reaching the widest dissemination of research results and their free use through independent channels (although complementary to the commercial ones). Self-archiving of peer-reviewed scholarly papers into electronic Open Archives and the publication of open access journals indeed represent the tools indicated by the Budapest Open Access Initiative, tools through which the paradigm of open access can be fulfilled. Moreover this presentation offers a brief overview of Italian initiatives for Open Access, including the recent Messina Declaration.
