Abstract

The popularization of the Internet as the greater, better and faster mass media created by the mankind has produced changes in all the levels of the daily life of the people who have access to it. One of the economic sectors based on the Internet that has received a greater impact has been the cultural one, and particularly the audio-visual sector. The contents digitization has allowed a better access to the culture that has not equivalent in all the history of the Humanity. In spite of this the book sector and the publishing have remained apparently immune to this vortex. Although the changes have been very slow in comparison to other cultural areas, they are taking place. When Google announced that was developing a project to digitize a million books copyright-free in collaboration with different North American universities an "earthquake" happened in the publishers sector. On the other hand, publishers market their books via the Internet also foster the digitization of contents as a resource to harness their sales. In view of this, with the arrival of Web 2.0 and Library 2.0, the information professionals cannot remain anchored in a past based on atoms. Now the information flows as bits and thus will do in the future. To understand the new world in which we are staying is completely capital for librarians.
