The article is an analysis of three basic concepts concerning the organization and performance of information retrieval, i.e. “search strategy”, “search heuristics” and “search tactics”, discussed within the context of actions taken by the users of information retrieval (IR) systems. Definitions and interpretations of the terms used in Polish and foreign literature have been analyzed and considerable differences between various definitions have been observed.
