The objective of the study is the analysis of catalonian universities scientific production in the period 2000-2004. It has been calculated indicators by university about scientific activity, visibility, impact, power research,
citation, selfcitation, regional and international collaboration. The empirical evidences show a stratified university system, without a clear specialization in their activities of research. The network of international collaboration by countries with Catalan universities has been drawn graphically. The universities as a whole prefer to collaborate with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy and obtain better visibility when they sign his works with authors in English language.

BB. Bibliometric methods
By a new fractal/transfractal geometry of the Unified Scientometric Model, it is possible to demonstrate that science presents an oscillating or pulsing dynamic. It goes alternatively through two types of phases. Some phases are fractal, with crystalline networks, where the Matthew effect clearly manifests itself with regard to the most notable actors and those that provide the best contributions. The other phases are transfractal, with deformed, amorphous networks, in which the actors, considered mediocre, present greater capacity to restructure the network than the more renowned actors. The result after any transfractal deformation is a new crystalline fractal network. Behind this vision lies the Kuhn paradigms. As examples, the scientific fields of surfactants and autism have been analysed.

A bibliometric and thematic approach of the journal Anales de Documentación (AD) is presented (1998-2007) on account of the celebration of its tenth anniversary. Productivity, collaborations patterns, research areas, visibility and jour-nal impact are analysed. AD has published 153 research papers presented by 176 au-thors belonging to 56 institutions. AD presents a gender equality, with an institu-tional participation of 12 different countries. The main themes analyzed are Internet and Information and Communication Technologies, Library Science, information management and knowledge management, evaluation and quality of services, infor-mation resources and access to them and scientific publications. AD has received 54 citations corresponding to 64 authors, 30.7% papers being cited. Because of that, AD has reached a relevant position in the ranking of Library and Information Sci-ence Spanish journals.

A Scientometric Method to Analyze Scientific Journals as Exemplified by the Area of Information Science
Boell, Sebastian K.
AA. Library and information science as a field.
I. Information treatment for information services
BB. Bibliometric methods
Background. In most academic disciplines journals play an important role in disseminating findings of research among the disciplinary community members. Understanding a discipline's body of journals is therefore of grave importance when looking for previous research, compiling an overview of previous research and and in order to make a decision regarding the best place for publishing research results. Furthermore, based on Bradford's Law of scattering, one can assume that in order to be able to compile a satisfying overview of previous research a wide range of journals has to be scanned, but also that there are some 'core' journals which are of more importance to specific disciplines than others.
Aim. This thesis aims to compile a comprehensive master list of journals which publish articles of relevance to Library and Information Science (LIS). A method to rank journals by their importance is introduced and some key characteristics of the disciplines body of journals are discussed. Databases indexing the disciplines journals are also compared.
Method. The master list of LIS journals was created by combining the journal listings of secondary sources indexing the field's literature. These sources were six databases focusing on LIS literature: INFODATA, Current Contents, Library and Information Science Abstracts, Library Information Science Technology Abstracts, Information Science and Technology Abstracts, and Library Literature and Information Science, the LIS subsection in three databases with a general focus: Social Science Citation Index, Academic Search Premier, and Expanded Academic ASAP, and the listing of LIS journals from the Elektronische Zeitschriften Bibliothek. Problems related to editorial policies and technical shortcomings are discussed, before comparing: predominant publication languages, places of publication, open access, peer review, and the ISI Journal Impact Factors (JIF). Journals were also ranked by the number of occurrences in multiple databases in order to identify 'core' publications. The number of journals overlapping between databases are estimated and a matrix giving the overlap is visualized using multi dimensional scaling. Lastly, the degree of journals overlapping with other disciplines is measured.
Results. A comprehensive master list of 1,205 journals publishing articles of relevance to LIS was compiled. The 968 active journals are mostly published in English, with one third of the journals coming from the US and another third from the UK and Germany. Nearly 16% of all journals are open access, 11% have a ISIJIF, and 42% are peer reviewed. Fifteen core journal could be identified and a list of the top fourteen journals published in Germany is introduced. Databases have between five to 318 journals in common and the journal collection shows an substantial overlap with a wide range of subjects, with the biggest journal overlap with Computing Studies, and Business and Economics.
Conclusion. The aim of compiling a comprehensive list of LIS journal was achieved. The list will contribute to our understanding of scholarly communication within the LIS discipline and provide academics and practitioners with a better understanding of journals within the discipline. The ranking approach proved to be sufficient, showing good similarity with other studies over the last 40 years. The master list of LIS journals has also potential use to further research.

La valutazione delle pubblicazioni: dalla letteratura a stampa agli Open Archives
Comba, Valentina
BB. Bibliometric methods
The publications evaluation is crucial to establish the value of authors and Institutions.
The competition between Universities, research groups and individuals to get funding, acknowledgment and tenures makes the publication list of each competitor the first important reference to exhibit.
Evaluation tools may be qualitative or quantitative. Bibliometrics refer to the quantitative tools.
Citation analysis has had its first expansion and utilization by Eugene Garfield information studies, dating back the 1950'. He build up the Science Citation Index as a instrument to study and evaluate the
scientific research, though at that time some authors were warning him against the possible misuse of the citation indicators.
A very useful review by Borgman and Furner is reported and discussed: the evaluative link analysis may help to understand when a citation is done more for some personal or irrational reasons than the pure reference to an important previous paper.
The ISI Impact Factor is widely used to evaluate research in many countries and Institutions; but even in the biomedical area (where is well known and extensively used) many are criticising IF, because inappropriate to evaluate research, and strongly biased by the American journals trend to cite each other.
A new perspective is offered by the Open Archive Initiative tools to evaluate usage of self-archived papers. In the digital library it is possible to trace any access and usage; indicators can be much more precise about the readers' activity (and therefore it is now possible to have a Reading Factor instead of just the citation Impact Factor). Very recently the OpCit Project has launched the CiteBase software, which is very useful
to show the usage and citation of self archived papers: this software therefore answers the evaluation need of researchers who publish not only on commercial journals but also in the Open Archives.

Analyses bibliometrically 226 publications [Papers Published in journals-220, thesis [others 4] by Biman Bagchi, a renowned physical chemist from India, published during 1981 to 2002. The first contribution of the author was in 1981 at the age of 27. The number of his contributions in a year peaked in 1999 and 2002 when it touched 19. The author is highly productive in as much as on average the author has produced 10 papers per year. In the byline of authorship, Bagchi occupies the first authorship position in 69 cases. His collaborator A. Chandra occupies the first authorship position in 30 papers thus becoming Bagchi's closest collaborator. The journal has been the most preferred channel of communication of the author in as much as 220 papers out of 226 have been praced in journals. J. Chem. Phys. is found to be the most preferred journal that carried 91 papers of the author, followed by Chem. Phys. Lett. (21 papers). J. Phys. Chem. (19 papers), Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. - Chem. Sci. (13 papers), and others. Of the papers, 179 received 4030 citations and 47 received no citations. It is expected that more than 20 uncited papers till 2002 will receive citations in future. Three papers of the author have received more than 200 citations each, and another three received between 100-200 citations each. The number of papers receiving 10 citations or more total 92. On four different years the scientist has received more than 300 citations and his citation rate per paper has peaked at 18.98. The article shows with a concrete example the growth, peaking and declining of citation rate. A few new terms such as citation gain, citation loss, gaining citation rate and losing citation rate have been introduced and described.

Informetría, bibliometría y cienciometría : aspectos teórico-prácticos
Araújo Ruiz, Juan A.

BB. Bibliometric methods
Mathematical methods have been applied to the study of scientific literature since the beginning of the last century. They gave origin to bibliometry. The eagerness for measuring the results of sciences in countries and organizations made possible the appearance of informetry and sciencetometrics. There is no doubt about the existance of similar characteristics among these 3 disciplines; however, each of them has its specific object and topic of study. This paper tries to define in a synthetized way the concept and object of these disciplines as well as some theoretical and practical aspects of the sciences to which they serve as instruments.

BB. Bibliometric methods
A bibliometic study of CUMED, the database par excellence generated by the National Medical Library is conducted in order to systematize the production of the Cuban medical literature. To this end, the following variables were considered: year of publication , type of document, thematic sources, and authoral and coauthoral activity. Serials were the most published type of document (14, 998, 86.58% of the total analyzed). The Cuban journals with the highest representation were: the Cuban Journal of Surgery, the Cuban Journal of Medicine, the Issues of History of Public Health and the Cuban Journal of Pediatrics. There are only 31 titles of foreigm journals with 98 articles written by Cuban authors. The most dealt with topics refer to the most important achievements of public health in the country as, for example, the sustained reduction of infant mortality rate and the prioritized programs in the health field. A similar situation is observed in the treatment of the precodified (age groups and sex) with a predominance of females and children. 8 893 main authors were identified. Of them, 125 were considered as big producers (more than 10 papers), 2 726 as average producers (from 2 to 9 papers) and 6 040 as small producers with just one paper. The fundamental function of the studied database was the bibliographic control of the documentary production of journals published by the National Center of Medical Information on Medical Sciences (13 382 registries of the 17 323 correspond to those published by ECIMED, its publishing house, accounting for 77.24%). A decrease of the documentary production registered in the database was observed during the 1990s as a result of the material limitations caused by the special period.

BB. Bibliometric methods
This paper gives a sample of the research programmes of the Centre for Informetric Studies, Copenhaguen. It also describes informetrics as a sub-field of bibliometrics discussing its new approach, i.e. the combination of advan-ced information retrieval theories and methodologies with the scientific study of information flows. The Centre aims to apply bibliometric methods not only to scientometric studies and research evaluations of science and technology, but also the analysis of their societal, industrial and other special relations. This means an extension of the traditional bibliometric analyses to cover non-scholarly communities in which information produced, communicated and used. The author also appeals to LIS professionals to face the challenge of this new area of quantitative studies, learning to explore data bases also as a tool to carry out analytical work, emphasizing the possibilities for those professionals to raise their positions in the information work hierarchies, as well as to explore informetric techniques to support the management of decisions and policy making.

Indicadores bibliométricos de la revista científica Zootecnia Tropical
Arenas, Simón
Romero, Alfredo
BB. Bibliometric methods
Zootecnia Tropical Journal, edited by the National Institute of Agricultural Research (Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agropecuarias, Venezuela) was analyzed through a set of bibliometric indicators. This analysis included 246 articles that constitute the collection from volume 1 to 19, 33 issues in total, between years 1985 and 2001. Venezuelan Agricultural Bibliography database was used as source of data, and an ad hoc procedure. There were determined several supply and demand indicators that characterize the journal, showing the first indicators about its impact on research and academic sectors in the country. Results showed that the journal had favorable bibliometric indicators; a growth index of 3.22 in average, a growing number of authors and institutions, as well as typical values of productivity indicators for domestic journals. Presence in internet is discussed in relation to the access of electronically available journals. Such information provides valuable indicators in the decision making process to help the improvement of the journal positioning and a more solid scientific status.

The AIDS epidemic is a threat to society. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the participation of Latin American and Caribbean representatives at the International Conferences on AIDS with a view point of the topic of their presentations and the delegates’ affiliation. METHODS: data were obtained by searching AIDSLINE, a database prepared by the National Library of Medicine in the USA for presentations by Latin American and Caribbean countries. The authors’ affiliation was classified according to the Inventory of HIV /AIDS Information Sources in the Asia Pacific Region (UNAIDS Asia Pacific Intercountry Team) and the topic was classified according to UNAIDS International best practices. RESULTS: From the fifth to the twelfth International Conferences (1989-1998) Brazilian and Mexican authors delivered the largest number of presentations. The authors’ affiliation was mainly government institutions followed by nongovernment organisations (NGOs) and community-based groups. The presentations were on subjects such as: HIV/AIDS epidemiology, health systems, health promotion, communication and education. CONCLUSIONS: There is a striking coexistence of researchers; government officials; representatives from NGOs, community- based and religious groups; consultants and journalists at such International Conferences. The delegates appear to fulfill their role, except, possibly the scientists who require an audience knowledgeable in their own expertise.

Website entries from a web log file perspective : a new log file measure
Mayr, Philipp
BB. Bibliometric methods
CA. Use studies.
Web log files record user transactions on webservers and offer due to their extent, their properties and potential an excellent investigation field for contemporary information and online behaviour studies [see also Nicholas et al., 1999]. Web log files actually offer the possibility to extract information about user access pattern, site visibility and site interlinking [see also Thelwall, 2001]. Furthermore web log file are excellent sources for informational investigations such as tracking spider behaviour, search engine query analysis or cognitive ergonomics. A drill down analysis to the smallest website entity (a specific web page) and also to other web entities, like directories or sites [see also Thelwall, 2003] can be performed with log data. This facilitates counting information usage frequencies on different levels of a website and enables new forms of information studies (e.g. finding regularities). Practical website insights for site access optimisation/evaluation are additional guaranteed.
Navigation on the web occurs in three separable types. The majority of online navigation is realized over hyperlinks which are set-up manually (e.g. directory entries, other intellectually build backlinks) or automatically (e.g. search engines, other web-based information systems). Direct navigation (e.g. over bookmarks, browser history) coexists between the “link-based” navigation and can be seen as an indication of well-known and perhaps authoritative websites. The three distinguishable web navigation types "navigation about search engine queries", "navigation about backlinks" and "direct navigation" can be separately identified in log data if the webserver provides the extended log file field “referer” [see also Thelwall, 2001].

BB. Bibliometric methods
It is well known that most of the research on agriculture is carried out in developed countries. However, it is necessary to identify to what extent Latin Amer-ica and the Caribbean countries are contributing to the mainstream research output. Therefore, we attempted a bibliometric analysis in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the region. Science Citation Index Expanded, for the period 1995-2002, was used as source of data. We retrieved papers published in indexed journals in the following six catego-ries: Agricultural Economics & Policy; Agricultural Engineering; Dairy & Animal Science; Agriculture, Multidisciplinary; Soil Science; and Agronomy. Also, papers that were cited as well as the number of citations attracted. The most productive disciplines were: Dairy & Animal Science.

The result provided by the sample comprising about 5,800 words fits the law best with just one deviation. The main exception is found to be one-letter words.

Reports results of a study to test the validity of Lotka's Law in the field of library and information science (LIS), using the personal authors taken from the annual Name Index of Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) for 1992 and the annual Author Index of LISA for 1993 as the base for obtaining data. LISA was used as it was found to be more comprehensive than other abstracting and indexing services in the LIS field. The author productivity patterns for these 2 years were measured by noting: the number of authors publishing 1 article, the number of authors publishing 2 articles and finally, the number of authors publishing 5 articles. The value for the Lotka factor (n) was calculated to be 3.23 for 1992 data and 3.1 for1993 data. Concludes that Lotka's Law is applicable to the LIS field.

Evaluation of books as research outputs in history of medicine
Lewison, Grant
BB. Bibliometric methods
BG. Information dissemination and diffusion.
Lists of books about the history of medicine were compiled from book reviews and from the references in papers in the subject taken from the Social Sciences Citation Index. The authors' addresses were sought from papers in this database and thereby some of the books could be attributed to individual countries, such as the UK and the USA, which were to be compared. Counts of citations and of reviews to individual books both showed that the UK was a very strong performer in this subject, and that its standing relatively had increased over the last few decades. This judgment rein-forced the results of interviews carried out overseas with senior historians of medicine and gave them extra credibility.

Analyses the citations provided in articles of the Indian Journal of Information, Library and Society (IJILIS), during 1995-1999. The journal received 7 citations per article. About 67.5 % of articles had 1-20 citations. More citations were from the books and periodicals than the other type of materials. Tendency of authors seems to cite indegenous work more as compared to the documents published in other countries. Out of 138 citing articles,
37 articles have no references. Dr. S.R. Ranganathan was first in the rank of authors whose valuable books have been utilised by several authors more frequently and has 32 citations. Second Rank goes to V. L. Kalyane having 25 citations followed by B. B. Shukla (12 citations); P. N. Kaula (11 citations); V. Venkatappaiah (8 citations); Grogan (7 citations); Lancaster (5 citations); B. Guha, D. K. Gupta and Krishna Kumar (4 citations each); R. L. Mittal (3 citations); and Neelameghan (2 citations). English language was dominating amongst the cited articles, and it is cent percent. Only 14% citing authors had tendency of self citation, co-citation cases are 110, and only a couple of cases being repeated. More than 90 % citations were from library and information science journals. Each Journal received on an average of 7 citations.

Despite new technological advances, access to local collections via the online catalogue is still deficient. By means of the statistical analysis of a sample taken from a university library collection this study shows that the ratio of collective monographs vis a vis both the whole of the collection and the number of individual works contained therein makes it necessary to provide access to this type of works via the online catalogue.

CA. Use studies.
BACKGROUND: The bibliometric analysis constitutes a statistic tool when determining the obsolecense and visibility of the publications. It is also the case when studying the invisible colleges. In this study, the consume of information through the references that occur in works about medical terminology gathered in the batabase IME (Indice Médico Español) will be analyzed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An amount of 1507 references from the 116 index-linked works found in the database have been cited. All the works here considered are original articles, reviews, special articles, editorials and letters to the editor. RESULTS: The magazine that cites the most is Medicina Clínica, (Barcelona), with an overall of 625 cites (41,47%) in ints 48 works (41,38%), with a big difference with the following magazine in range. The type of documents that are more frequently cited are books and book chapters (763 cites, 51%), followed by the articles. The most cited magazine is also Medicina Clínica (Barcelona) with 158 cites (21,53%), and the half-life of the cited works is of ten years . CONCLUSIONS: The cites are normally referred to mainly Spanish books and articles. Medicina Clinica (Barcelona) leads the first position among the citing and cited magazines. It is also on the lead with the overall production on the same subject.

BB. Bibliometric methods
The revelation of human genome complete secuence make possible the understanding of molecular causes of disease as well as the discovery of signification of genetic differences among human beings for the development of diseases. The research of XXI century will be devoted to the understanding of how genetic variants and environment regulate organs, tissues, cell, phenotype, and it´s precisely in this search where the bioinformatics is introduced, an emerged science that uses the new information technologies to gather, organize, analyze and supply biological information aim at answering complex questions on biology. Nevertheless the final objective is wider and is that of using this informatin to develop new methods to cure, manage and prevent diseases. But the way from gen, identification to the disclosure of effective treatments is long and complex. Thus challenge is established for biologists, informatics, doctors and librarians is health care field, in the case of librarians there is a need to acquire a basic instruction in topics related to molecular biosciences aimed at preparing and contributing to scientific communication efectiveness among several professions. Genomics, genomic based medicine, proteomics, epidemiology and genomic epidemiology, bioinformatics and it´s their relation with medical informatics are discussed. An informetric approach to the production on bioinformatics in the Web of Science from 2000 to 2004 was carried out. The analysis of scientific production on bioinformatics in the studied period showed a lineal growth that denotes an advance and spread in this new discipline.

Introduction to Informetrics : quantitative methods in library, documentation and information science
Egghe, Leo
Rousseau, Ronald
BB. Bibliometric methods
I. Statistics
This part begins with elementary descriptive statistics and elements of probability. It continues with a chapter on inferential statistics, including regression, correlation and nonparametric statistics. Next, there is a chapter on sampling theory, including overlap problems. Part I concludes with a short description of several techniques of multivariate statistics: multiple regression, principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling and cluster techniques.
II. Operations research and library management
The second part deals with applications of linear programming, including transportation and assignment problems, and basic queueing theory. Special attention is paid to book circulation interference.
III. Citation analysis
Citer motivations, citation networks, bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis are introduced here. Citation measures such as the impact factor are defined. This part ends with some science policy applications.
IV. Informetric models
Informetric models and their relations are studied. At the heart of this theory is the dual approach between sources and items giving rise to the definition of Information Production Processes. Explanations and applications of the classical informetric laws as well as fitting methods are provided.

Wikipedia, an international project that uses Wiki software to collaboratively create an encyclopaedia, is becoming more and more popular. Everyone can directly edit articles and every edit is recorded. The version history of all articles is freely available and allows a multitude of examinations. This paper gives an overview on Wikipedia research. Wikipedia’s fundamental components, i.e. articles, authors, edits, and links, as well as content and quality are analysed. Possibilities of research are explored including examples and first results. Several
characteristics that are found in Wikipedia, such as exponential growth and scale-free networks are already known in other context. However the Wiki architecture also possesses some intrinsic specialities. General trends are measured that are typical for all Wikipedias but vary between languages in detail.

Produção científica: por que medir? o que medir?

BB. Bibliometric methods
Science as activity is a social construction, it is complex, and requires courage and high investments. It is not neutral nor extemporaneous; settled in the concentration of its work, that, in consequence promote the economic monopoly of its results. It is aimed at the élite and is materialized as the effect of St. Matthew: for to everyone who has, more will be given. Therefore, good intentions and contradictions require reflections, questionings, discussions, critics and critical mass, the area of concentration of the "Science of Sciences" focused on this work.

The aim of this work is to assess the scope of the clinical research performed by Cuban scientific institutions. A retrospective search about clinical trials published by journals indexed in MEDLINE and Science Citation Index was carried out, and 172 references to works published with the participation of Cuban research centers were retrieved. A group of 653 Cubans and 175 foreign authors were identified. The average of authors by article was 7,16, and the most common author groups were made up of more than six specialists. A total of 82 clinical trials were the result of collaborations between scientific institutions; 83 research centers took part in the trials, 36 of them from others countries. The reports about the 172 clinical trials were published in 96 journals from 17 countries, and the 74,4 % of the articles were written in English. Sixty-three therapeutic products, technics and procedures were tested in differents types of patients, and 41 disorders were treated. Human adults, with a relative balance between women and men, were the subjects most frequently studied. The bibliometric study made possible to confirm the cuban advances as regards to the clinical trials execution for the authentication of products reached by the medical-pharmaceutical industry, as well as to define the research centers in the vanguard regarding this subject.

HZ. None of these, but in this section.
A biographical synthesis of Nicolás José Gutiérrez Hernández, founder of "Repertorio Médico Habanero", title of the first Cuban medical journal specialized in medicine that began to circulate for first time in November, 1840, is offered. Some aspects of this publication regarding content, format, pagination and frequency are specified. Some results of a brief bibliometric analysis considering author, article average, and the most managed topics, among other indicators, are presented. A bibliographic inventory containing the references of all the papers published in "Repertorio Médico Habanero" since it began, in 1840, till it disappeared, in 1843 is also presented. Value is added to this bibliography on incorporating an annotation to each quotation with a brief description of the content of all the papers and of the auxiliary codes by author and topic in order to facilitate the quick access to every original article. This bibliographic inventory will put at the disposal of doctors, health managers, information professionals, historians and other interested persons a useful reference work on the annals and content of this relic of Cuban medical bibliography.

We present a system for mapping the structure of research topics in a corpus. TermWatch portrays the "aboutness" of a corpus of scientific and technical publications by bridging the gap between pure statistical approaches and symbolic techniques. In the present paper, an experiment on unsupervised textmining is performed on a corpus of scientific titles and abstracts from 16 prominent IR journals. The preliminary results showed that TermWatch was able to capture low occurring phenomena which the usual clustering methods based on co-occurrence may not highlight. The results also reflect the expressive power of terminological variations as a means to capture the structure of research topics contained in a corpus.

China's exponential growth in science and the contribution of firms

BE. Information economics.
It is shown that for all essential scientific and technological indicators China shows an exponential increase. Only for the number of R&D personnel the increase is linear. Special attention goes to the contribution of Chinese firms in the output of scientific articles. It is shown that, although this output increases exponentially in absolute numbers, its share in the total scientific output of China is lower than that of European countries. It is concluded that if China succeeds in developing a well-structured technology transfer system from research to economic development, the increasing technological and scientific outputs, illustrated in this article, will be a main source of future economic growth.

BB. Bibliometric methods
This is a bibliometric study of the articles indexed in the Web of Science, which comprises Nanotechnology as a scientific discipline. The word Nanotechnology was chosen as a search strategy in any of the database fields of the Institute for Scientific Information of Philadelphia. A total of 1809 article registries were obtained and downloaded in text pattern, and then sent to a file of the EndNote program, with the aim of creating the frequency indexes of the studied variants. The most productive authors, journals and geographical areas were identified. In this sense, the leading role of the United States, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom was evidenced. An exponential growth in the amount of articles was observed, which shows the boom this new discipline has experienced during the last years. Bilateral and multilateral cooperation among the countries to develop nanotechnological research was analysed, and the Nanotechnology potentials as a scientific discipline for the coming years were also assessed.

Using local citation data to relate the use of journal articles by academic researchers to the coverage of full-text document access systems

DD. Academic libraries.
JJ. Document delivery.
BB. Bibliometric methods
The methodology and findings are presented of an empirical study comparing local citation patterns with the holdings lists of a number of sources of journal articles. These sources were the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) and the BL 'inside' service, library holdings, ProQuest Direct, SearchBank, EiText and a linking system including both the Geobase database and the BLDSC. The value of local citation figures is discussed, as is the concept of a 'core' of journal titles, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Using these figures to represent the local use of journal articles, the coverage of the document sources was found to vary widely. Unsurprisingly, the BLDSC was found to offer the widest coverage. Newer, electronic systems generally fared less well, but may offer other advantages.

Fundamental methodologies and tools for the employment of webometric analyses : a discussion and proposal for improving the foundation of webometrics
Fugl, Liv Danman
BB. Bibliometric methods
LC. Internet, including WWW.
The paper Fundamental methodologies and tools for the employment of webometric analyses defines the most important rules to keep in mind before performing webometric analyses. The paper deals with the two basic elements, that constitutes the foundation for webometric analyses: the documents being analysed, and the tools that are applied for the data collection. The concepts of a citation theory and a link theory are discussed through a study of the current litterature. Different methodologies for uncovering motivations for making references in scientific articles are reviewed and discussed. A methodology for uncovering motivations for making links on webpages is proposed and applied on six researchers' websites at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Denmark, and on all the institutes at the same institution and at selected institutes at The Technical University of Denmark. The paper further contains a review on the linktopology of the Internet and the current status for the tools available for data collection. Finally, alternative possible tools for applying webometric analyses are proposed. The alternative tools are the Researchindex invented by Lawrence and Giles (Lawrence, Bollacker & Giles, 1999b; Giles, Bollacker & Lawrence, 1998), Kleinberg's HITS algorithm employed in the Clever search engine (The Clever Project, n.d.; Kleinberg, 1998), Proposals for possible extensions to the HTTP protocol to facilitate the collection and navigation of backlink information in the world wide web made by Chakrabarti, Gibson and McCurley (Chakrabarti, Gibson & McCurley, 1999c) and finally Link Agent, a program we have developed for this paper. The program makes it possible to uncover the reciprocal linking webpages, that exist in relation to the outgoing links from a chosen webpage.

Evaluación de la pertinencia de la base de datos del Instituto Nacional de la Administración Pública de Argentina
Dimitri, Pedro-Jorge
DF. Government libraries.
BB. Bibliometric methods
The porpouse of the present report is to establish if the Institute’s database is suitable as provider of the documentary ressources needed by the authors of the documents sponsored by Inap. To do so, it is counted how many of the papers cited by the authors were part of the fund at the moment of carrying on their studies. It is done a simulation, playing the role of each investigator looking for their references, and only in the case that the work had been incorporated previously to the writing, it is considered as belonging to the bibliographic fund. The evaluation is done with a scales ranging form 0 to 10 at the botton and the top respectively. The method followed is the one whick (Lancaster 1988) denominates “confrontation list”, which is made compilating, from , the studies done by a community of investigations from an entity, a bibliography made out of the footnotes, references at the end of the chapters, the final bibliography, etc. It was taken a random sample at 15% using aleatory numbers (the total ammount of papers at the moment of the study was 971). It was taken into account the following variables: Call number, Date of edititon, Total ammount of cites, Percentage of possesed cites, Total ammount of non possesed cites. The result was 53 works (35.09%) wint cites and 98 without quotations (64.90%). The total ammount of cites detected was 842, of which were present only 164 (19.47%).The latest were not taken into account do that with it it is impossible to measure the pertinence.

Its purpose is to combine methods from Social Network Analysis (SNA) and cybermetric techniques in order to ask for tendencies of integration of the European universities visible in their web presence and the role of different universities in the process of the emergence of an European Research Area. We find as a main result that the European network is set up by the aggregation of well-defined national networks, whereby the German and British networks are dominant. The national networks are connected to each other through outstanding national universities in each country.

HA. Periodicals, Newspapers.
Paper which has by objective to observe the manifest behaviour or the ahthors who publish at Biblios, an electronic magazine devoted to Library Science, Museology and Archivology, edited in Perú, to analyse bibliometrically the following items: Coauthorship index, Author's genre, Productivity by genre, Citant authors the most productive, Academic degree or profession, Country of residence, Place of work, Paper without quotations, Amount of citations, Discrimination of citations by type of literature, Mean life of self-citations, Authors quoted, Languages, Periodical most used, Descriptors, Key words of the cited titles, Presence of internet, Mean life of the citations, Countries in which the citations were edited. For that matter it produces tables and statiscal interpretations which permit to bring out their role of producers/consumers of information. It concludes in that authors belong primordially to Library Science, have a small index of coauthorship, use the English language as the first idiom of reference. Besides they are interested mainly by monographies and in second place by papers presented before congreses and the use of internet reaches the 11.92%. Regarding the academic degrees there is a remarkable tendence to Library Science. The mean life of the work used is 6.285 years, the lose of actuality is 10.1 and the index of Bradford is 34.28%. The majority of authors belong to the masculine genre, and work mainly at universities. The amount of self-citaions is 3.11%. Authors chiefly live at Perú, Spain and Argentina and the majority of the papers are written in Spanish. The patterns of production are those of the Biblios, but with a tendence to Library Science

During 1995-2002, 109 articles and 2277 references published in 10 volumen of the “Revista de Investigaciones Agropecuarias” (RIA) were investigated, except 1998-1999 that RIA wasn´t edited. In order to determinate authors´s behavior patttern: use of documental source, descriptors and languages´s prevalence, coauthors, colaboration´s groups, annual obsolescence and productivy, different index and bibliometric techniques were applied. Minimum references (in absolute terms) were during 1997 and 2001 years, but it was 1997 (144 references) considering relatives amount by volume. In respect to quotations, 67 was the maximum and 3 the minimum, with an average of 20,89 quotations by article; it was an coauthor´s index of 2,37, and 3,36 considering the 2277 references and the 109 papers, respectively. Spanish is the main language in works (91,74%) followed by english (8,26%). There was a prevalence of english as more consulted language (65,17%), followed by spanish (31,18%), and in minor proportion portuguese, french, germany and italian language (3,65%). Besides, the periodical publications were the most consulted documental source (62,41%), following monographs (28,15%) and finally papers presented at Congress (9,44%). Regarding consulted literature during the last 3 years, major frecuency ocurred during the 80´ and 90´ decades. Cattle, forages, dairy cattle, insecticides and direct drilling were the main subject, fitted with INTA´s objectives, editor of RIA. Applying Bradford´s law, core will contain authors with up to 4 works: Saini (7), Paccapelo (6), Kloster and Santini (5), Benintende, Covas and Rearte (4). There was coincidence between the subject of these authors and the descriptors core.

AA. Library and information science as a field.
Information Systems (IS) is a discipline in which research and practice are closely intertwined. IS is also closely related to and overlapping several other disciplines, including Information Science. Thus, IS provides an excellent case for examining the interplay of research and practice in a rapidly changing discipline. We explore the intellectual structure and subject themes in Information Systems (IS) research for 1990 to 1999 through the identification and analysis of the field's core journal literature. A core journal list of 100 titles was created and examined with journal cocitation analysis (JSA). JSA demonstrates that IS is a coherent discipline with research ranging from technology-oriented software and hardware to the application of IS in business and organizations. Journals are grouped into seven subject clusters: computer science, computer networking, computer engineering, information science, software engineering, human-computer
interaction, and management information systems. Information Science journals occupy a bridging position between technically oriented and application-focused clusters. ASIST publications, JASIST, ARIST, and PASIS, figure prominently in the Information Science cluster.

The purpose of this study was to examine the navigational patterns of graduate students’ text markings when they
interact with electronic documents during an active reading process, thus taking on the role of authors. The readings
took place in two settings, private and document sharing, where in the latter environment each document was shared
among a group of students. The resulting interaction was monitored and electronically logged for each of these
environments, which then provided us with user-navigational pat-terns taxonomy. Descriptive and statistical tests were
carried out on the activities observed within this taxonomy to develop a framework for comparing the reading patterns
for readers working in individual and document sharing environments. This framework was then used to obtain user
feedback during the interview sessions that were held with the participants of this study. Because of our investigation, we were able to create a set of specific recommendation that system designers can use in order to create better, more intuitive, and user-friendly electronic reading and marking systems.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Zhao, Dangzhi
EZ. None of these, but in this section.
BB. Bibliometric methods
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed.

Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com/) provides a new method of locating potentially relevant articles on a given subject by identifying subsequent articles that cite a previously published article. An important feature of Google Scholar is that researchers can use it to trace interconnections among authors citing articles on the same topic and to determine the frequency with which a specific article is cited by others as it has a "cited by" feature. We will begin with an overview of how to use it for citation analysis, and then progress through advanced search techniques. This study also compares the citation counts provided by Web of Science and Google Scholar for articles in the field of Webometrics. We make several suggestions for improvement it. Finally, it concludes that Google Scholar provides a free alternative or complement to other citation indexes.

The Web Impact Factor : a critical review
Noruzi, Alireza
BB. Bibliometric methods
LC. Internet, including WWW.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the link-based web site impact measure known as the web impact factor (WIF). It is a quantitative tool for evaluating and ranking web sites, top-level domains and sub-domains. The paper also aims to discuss the WIF's advantages and disadvantages, data collection problems, and validity and reliability of WIF results. A key to webometric studies has been the use of large-scale search engines, such as Yahoo! and AltaVista that allow measurements to be made of the total number of pages in a web site and the total number of back-links to the web site. These search engines provide similar possibilities for the investigation of links between web sites/pages to those provided by the academic journals citation databases from the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). But the content of the web is not of the same nature and quality as the databases maintained by the ISI. This paper reviews how the WIF has been developed and applied. It has been suggested that web impact factors can be calculated as a way of comparing the attractiveness of web sites or domains on the web. It is concluded that, while the WIF is arguably useful for quantitative intra-country comparison, application beyond this (i.e. to inter-country assessment) has little value. The paper offers a critical review of literature on the WIF and associated indicators.

Since the end of the ‘80, alongside with the general increase in the production of children's books, an increase in the publication of the kind of books for children, called “knowledge” or “non literary” books, it is observed. They have become a very attractive and popular type of books, but their study is not yet in depth, at least as much as it would deserve. The goal of this study, in an individual Greek library, is to locate the main parameters of children’s knowledge books.

Google Scholar : the new generation of citation indexes

LC. Internet, including WWW.
Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com) provides a new method of locating potentially relevant articles on a given subject by identifying subsequent articles that cite a previously published article. An important feature of Google Scholar is that researchers can use it to trace interconnections among authors citing articles on the same topic and to determine the frequency with which others cite a specific article, as it has a "cited by" feature. This study begins with an overview of how to use Google Scholar for citation analysis and identifies advanced search techniques not well documented by Google Scholar. This study also compares the citation counts provided by Web of Science and Google Scholar for articles in the field of "Webometrics." It makes several suggestions for improving Google Scholar. Finally, it concludes that Google Scholar provides a free alternative or complement to other citation indexes.

Web impact factors for Iranian Universities
Noruzi, Alireza
BB. Bibliometric methods
LC. Internet, including WWW.
This study investigates the Web Impact Factors (WIFs) for Iranian universities and introduces a new system of measurement. Counts of links to the web sites of Iranian universities were calculated from the output of AltaVista search engine. The WIFs for Iranian universities were calculated by dividing link page counts by the number of pages found in AltaVista for each university at a given point in time. These WIFs were then compared, to study the impact, visibility, and influence of Iranian university web sites. Overall, Iranian university web sites have a low inlink WIF. While specific features of sites may affect an institution's Web Impact Factor, there is a significant correlation between the proportion of English-language pages at an institution's site and the institution's backlink counts. This indicates that for linguistic reasons, Iranian (Persian-language) web sites may not attract the attention they deserve from the World Wide Web. This raises the possibility that information may be ignored due to linguistic and geographic barriers, and this should be taken into account in the development of the global Web.

Utilization of information and communication technology, portion of national budget allocated for research and development, man-power participating in scientific research, and scientific activities are specific criterions in evaluation of countries’ scientific improvements. Scientific activities taking part in well-known national or international serials are significant criterions for access and common usage standing point of view. A scientific study cannot be abstracted by other studies in its domain. Throughout scientific production process, researchers benefit from previous researches. Citation indexes are sources of measure in terms of usage proportion and user profile. International citation indexes are intensively used especially by academic groups, on the other hand, there isn’t any national citation index in our country.
In this paper, national indexes and the drawbacks of lacking national citation indexes will be emphasized.

Bibliometrics deals with the quantitative analysis of some distinct characteristics (i.e. authorship, subject, publication information, and cited sources) of publications or documents. The process of scientific communication in various fields can be investigated using bibliometric data obtained in such studies. This paper analyzes the bibliometric features of 100 master’s and doctoral dissertations completed at the Department of Library Science of Hacettepe University between 1974 and 2002. An average dissertation was 171 pages long and contained 70 citations. Doctoral dissertations were twice as long as master’s dissertations (275 pages as opposed to 142 pages). Similarly, the average number of citations in a doctoral dissertation was 2.5 times higher than that of a master’s dissertation. Monographs received half of all citations (7019) while journals did 42%, dissertations and electronic publications 3% each, and “other” documents such as unpublished manuscripts 2%. The Türk Kütüphaneciliği (the journal Turkish Librarianship), Resmî Gazete (Official Gazette), College & Research Libraries, Library Trends, Library Journal, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Unesco Bulletin for Libraries were among the most frequently cited journals. Articles that appeared in the top four and top 38 journals received 32% and 67% of all citations, respectively. The distribution of citations to foreign journals fits the Bradford’s Law of Scattering. The mean half-life of sources cited in dissertations was 9 years. Sources cited in master’s dissertations were younger than those of doctoral dissertations. The great majority of cited resources in dissertations had single authorship. Findings obtained in this study can be used to evaluate the library collections as well as to develop a core journals list in librarianship.

This paper presents the results of a research in progress on HIV/AIDS research in developing countries. In this case, the paper refers to the collaboration patterns found among researchers in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. A bibliographic search in both, regional (Latin American and Caribbean Database on the Health Sciences–LILACS) and international (MEDLINE) databases for the period 1982-2005 was conducted. The goal being to compare patterns of collaboration found among regional countries through both databases. Bibexcell 2001 was used to generate the registry files needed for the following indicators: authorship; country of publication; type of documents; subject content of the publications, and language. Results described that collaboration was more visible in MEDLINE than in LILACS. It was also found that the USA was the leading country in collaboration with all the 12 countries analysed. The paper further discusses on the implications of this type of research for developing countries and provides practical applications of the results derived from the study.

BB. Bibliometric methods
The research presented very briefly in this paper aims to develop and apply a metric for estimating trends in databases of articles. The motivation for estimating trends in these databases is that these trends are possibly of interest in research and science policy.
The objectives of this paper are to introduce the metric (called ‘absolute term incidences’), and to compare this metric with the metric used by Braun and Schubert and Gu (called ‘term frequencies’), in addition to briefly present some potential uses and limitations of absolute term incidences. This research is part of my Doctoral project on bibliometrics and policy.

This paper presents the results of a search for statistical relationships between authorship in terms of the number of authors, number of significant terms/words in article titles, number of references cited, and citation impact of a set of 467 articles published in the international journal Scientometrics from 1999 to 2003. Our analysis shows that, controlling for the growth dynamics of citations, the mean citation impact of articles depends strongly on the authorship as measured by the number of authors per article. A chi-square test indicated that the number of references cited in articles and their citation impact are not independent. There is a fairly high degree of linear association between the number of times an article is cited and the number of references it contains. Our analysis also shows that at any level of aggregation there is no statistically significant association between citation impact and the number of significant words in the titles of articles.

Survey of Collaboration for Digital Libraries among Scientists: a bibliometric approach
Farajpahlou, A. Hossein
BB. Bibliometric methods
Many aspects of digital libraries have been considered and examined so far by many researchers and authors. How much these efforts have been collaborative within the last few years by those who have been actively involved in recording of studies done on theoretical and practical aspects of digital libraries, was the main point of concern for this researcher. To achieve this, the EBSCOs Academic Search FullTEXT Premier database and Science Direct online database were consulted for online electronic articles on digital libraries. The publication period was limited to 5 years, i.e., from January 2000 to January 2005. Some 130 articles in EBSCO database, and 115 articles were returned in Science Direct database. In the course of examination, Collaboration Coefficient equation was used as was introduced by Ajiferuke, et al, [1]. Calculation of the CC values revealed that collaboration in publication of digital library records has been a growing trend in the last five years, though not very much remarkably. 109 subjects were identified in the articles that were discussed in relation to digital libraries. Among these, the highest collaboration rates were identified to be associated with issues such as technicalities, application, experiments, performance, and, information processing and retrieval in digital libraries

Brazil academic webuniverse revisited : a cybermetric analysis
Aguillo, Isidro F.
Ortega, José L.

BB. Bibliometric methods
The analysis of the web presence of the universities by means of cybermetric indicators has been shown as a relevant tool for evaluation purposes. The developing countries in Latin-American are making a great effort for publishing electronically their academic and scientific results. Previous studies done in 2001 about Brazilian Universities pointed out that these institutions were leaders for both the region and the Portuguese speaking community. A new data compilation done in the first months of 2006 identify an exponential increase of the size of the universities’ web domains. There is also an important increase in the web visibility of these academic sites, but clearly of much lower magnitude. After five years Brazil is still leader but it is not closing the digital divide with developed world universities.

During the last 10 years, a new framework of SCIENCE STUDIES Theory System has been formed with the progress of science and technology (S&T). Starting with the research tradition and paradigm, we study the main academic fields, the relative disciplines and focuses of SCIENCE STUDIES with the analytical tools and the methods in Scientometrics. The results of study conclude the following:
-in the applied. field, “Science”, “Technology”, “Innovation” and corresponding “S&T Policy and Management” are found in the mainstream;
-in the methodological field, “Webometrics”, “Knowledge Mapping and Visualization Technology”, which are the advanced domains, have developed greatly;
-in the theoretical field, scholars and scientists start to focus on the interaction of Science-Technology-Innovation, the evolution of some disciplines in natural science and the theory of cooperation in S&T.
Basing on the above, the construction of SCIENCE STUDIES Theory System in the new century is discussed.
