The overall goal of this research is to identify the reasons that the group of university had to look at providing a specialized service information, stressing that do not come from any specialty informational. The particular aim is to determine the role of awareness as an element of higher education specialist, which produces professionals capable of understanding the specific needs arising from conditions such as visual impairment. We used for this investigation the technique of focus group interview with a community of students of the psychology of National Pedagogical University. The motivations of the students interviewed said they prepared to offer information services to people with visual impairment not due to their environment has a relative or acquaintance with this impediment or obtaining any record value curriculum, they agreed in which its interest began by the received professional formation within the university, because it sensitizes them and it promotes the restlessness to them to approach like volunteers to offer information services.

This research deals with electronic publishing contemporary academic context. In particular the focus of the research is to verify the degree of credibility of Firenze University Press (FUP), academic electronic press project of the University of Florence, investigating its users’ perceptions and opinions. This survey was motivated by the need of FUP to develop a strategy focused to rationalise resources, responding to users requirements. “Perché non sia un conto alla rovescia…” : un progetto di ricerca-azione sugli studenti collaboratori “a 150 ore” presso la Biblioteca di Ateneo dell’Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca

CB. User studies.
This paper presents the results of the action-research project on students employed for 150 hours, carried out between July and December 2003 in the Milano Bicocca University Library.
The project was born from the desire to develop these human resources often "under-used", listening to their perceptions both as consumers and as employees of the library.
It was decided therefore to adopt a qualitative and autobiographical approach to gather opinions and experiences of 53 aide students, employees in three library locations. Individual or small group interviews have revealed improvement areas about initial training, internal communication and organizational climate.
The sharing of research findings within the staff was used to create different actions that have improved aide students' perceptions.
The action-research on aide students continues...

The goal of this study is to measure the changes in scholarly journals usage in the Italian academic context. In order to meet our goals a survey was conducted based on a on-line questionnaire (1,305 respondents). The final results of this study clearly show the existence of four different categories of users (midway innovators, midway traditionalists, full innovators and full traditionalists), each category represents a different approach to digital library service.

The number of potential users of the National Center of Information on Medical Sciences was identified, segmented and arranged hierarchically according to the mission and strategic objectives of the National Health System. The high complexity and volume of the users required the characterization of the different entities of the center and of the services they render, as well as the description of the entities and groups that are part of the structrure of the user?s setting. The "methodology for studying the needs of training and information? that is studied in the careers of Library Science and Information Science at Havana University, was followed. The procedure used to make the "register of potential users?, its division into categories or segments, its arrangement by levels of priority, as well as the documentary and non-documentary sources utilized were presented.

CD. User training, promotion, activities, education.
On the base of a flow chart, the essential steps for the establishment and operation of a subsystem of information for the users (clients, consumers, readers and others) or of a market for informative products or services, within a information organization are presented. These steps include: the establishment or improvement of a total control of users, its categorización or segmentation and hierarchial structuring; the study of necessities of formation and information of individual or group users, its systematic update and its reflection in formats that allow to use the exit of that subsystem in which they depend on the same one and to revert the result of those processes in the own study of necessities. The importance of this subsystem is explained, to the light of the present tendencies in the intelligence activity and librarian in the world, that an emphasis in the functions determines educative and communicative, of impact and influences of the organizations of information in its surroundings. The guide appears in general form, so that it can be adaptated to diverse conditions.

Log file analysis for the web site of Rudjer Boskovic Institute library gives us a useful insight into structure and needs of our users. We can recognize two main groups based on the number of visits and preferences in respect to content. The first group consists of visitors looking for specific information about Rudjer Boskovic Institute and our library. Visitors from the second group are using our web pages exclusively as a starting point in searching for scientific information and resources. In developing our new web site, we have to pay attention to separation of those two kinds of content and therefore to enhance navigation.

The paper presents us with results of a poll on electronic library service usage and user satisfaction with its web pages, which has been conducted among the users of Rijeka University Library. Based on these results as well as on the experience with web page creation and user communication, the paper gives a possible answer to the question stated in the title.
Croatian libraries are on the road towards finding the most acceptable option in electronic surroundings, but as the road is long and not yet trodden, it seems rather useful to apply marketing strategies in presenting institutional characteristics, thus creating an image of impeccable quality.

L’esplorazione del comportamento degli utenti dell’Emeroteca Virtuale del CASPUR tramite metodologie statistiche

LR. OPAC systems.
By observing file logs of the system delivering “Emeroteca Virtuale” (Digital Library) service at CASPUR it’s possible to argue users behaviour towards scholarly e-journals.
As a first step it is important evaluating and getting from these logs only these messages that bring valid and coherent information; several approaches are proposed in literature, that need to be adapted to our current context. We start this presentation analyzing a few of these and their applications to our digital library service. A more complete analysis approach is then adopted as we get more informative data on users’ activities, focussing especially on research sessions (in order to derive users’ attitudes and habits). We suppose in fact that users’ vs service interaction relies onto two main different factors: specific user’s interest and e-journals attributes (publishers’ categories, print date, etc.). We derive as a last remark a users classification methodology, based on their ways of interacting with the remote system.

Korištenje hrvatskih ekonomskih časopisa prema rezultatima tematskih pretraživanja

CB. User studies.
The aim of this paper was to obtain reliable data on the use of 26 Croatian scholarly economic journals, available in the open access of the National and University Library for the period 1998- 2000. This research was conducted by evaluating the results of 700 subject searches in the NUL online catalogue. During the five-year period, 1 513 articles were used, of which 535 were used only once, and the other 978 more than a few times (that is – in more than one request for subject search). The importance of subject cataloguing of Croatian journals (Croatian bibliography. Series B, Articles in journals and proceedings) was stressed as users can thus have an easier access to journals' contents which facilitates their research.

Although more and more libraries are offering electronic mail reference services, little information about these services has been reported. We conducted and exploratory survey to examine public library e-mail reference services and the patrons who use them. Data collection techniques included a questionnaire mailed to participating libraries and a Web-based questionnaire completed by library patrons. Data gathered included: (1) information on the provision and administration of e-mail reference services provided by public libraries across the United States; (2) characteristics of public library email reference patrons and their satisfaction with the service they received; and (3) classification of email reference questions received by public libraries. Characteristics of the e-mail reference services varied considerably, but the patrons, citing ease and convenience as the major reasons for using such services, were mostly satisfied with what they received.

¿Qué sabemos sobre el uso de la Biblioteca pública?
Smith, Iam M.
CB. User studies.
DC. Public libraries.
Data from Westminster Libraries on membership, borrowing frequency and stock use is compared with significant studies of public library use from the last 50 years. The article examines the extent of public library use, and the social and demographic factors influencing use. Analysis of book and audio-visual stock use indicates the concentration of demand on a few titles and subjects, and the relationship to what is in demand commercially. Aspects of public library use have remained constant over at least the last 50 years, and across geographical boundaries. Public libraries are used principally for leisure, for borrowing recent fiction, for useful non fiction related to immediate life interests, and for pop music. Quantitative data from library systems provide a different, probably more accurate, picture of the nature and extent of public library use.

In an era of technological changes such as the present one, decision making by the librarian concerning materials provided for the users is a difficult task. This article emphasises that the library must help the user make effective use of new technologies by providing information in different formats – printed, audio, video, electronic. To this end, users' individual learning styles and user surveys' results must be taken into account.

Collecting, processing, preserving and giving to usage of books and other library materials, all those activities that define the librarianship, at the very first sight refer to this discipline as firmly fixed on formal principles. In the first place, each of those mentioned activities refer to a setup of precisely defined operations, with a task to organize adequately the unit of materials and to make it available to users. However, the work with the user, individual as well in group, differs as a segment which creativity can be discuss. Regarding the fact that various needs of the user always bring out new tasks in front of the librarian, and for some needs we cannot reply by simply renting the book or by giving information, and the fact that most of the librarians are working with pleasure for and with their users, we have to say that most of the librarians are doing much more for their users with their own inventivity within the formal base of their job.

The use of electronic information services by students at Glasgow Caledonian University: background to the project and introductory focus groups

This paper reports on the first stage of a study on the usage of electronic information services (EIS) by staff and students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU). The study used by qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The questionnaires used at GCU were modeled on those developed at LMU. The project aimed to monitor off-campus usage of EIS, the use of passworded databases, and the freely available internet. The volume of electronic citations in students’ course work and the possibility of developing routine performance indicators were also examined. Focus Groups were conducted with both staff and students between November 2001 and March 2002. These suggested, inter alia, that paramedics are the heaviest users of EIS and that paramedicine is the subject area where EIS are most integrated into the curriculum. Attitudes to the internet are extremely varied. Mode of attendance and workplace usage are important factors.

Benchmarking user satisfaction in academic libraries - a case study
Mundt, Sebastian
DD. Academic libraries.
FD. Public relations.
CB. User studies.
Customer satisfaction and service quality have so far been evaluated mostly from a local perspective although the quality element has been firmly established in academic library management for at least a decade. Critics of inter-institutional comparisons often object that different preconditions are not considered adequately. Examples from a joint user satisfaction survey conducted by 15 German university libraries in 2001 suggest that comparative data are a suitable means to identify cases of “best practice” and can effectively initialize processes of customer-focussed improvement. Furthermore, if compared with corresponding statistical data or performance measures, satisfaction ratings can reveal possible structural strengths and deficits relative to other libraries. On the other hand, follow-up telephone interviews with participating libraries showed that the survey results substantially challenged the institutions’ internal communication and public relations organisation, and underlined that even in a well-developed culture of assessment the need for professional mediation and coordination of comparative analyses may not be underestimated.

Change in store? An investigation into the impact of the book superstore environment on use, perceptions and expectations of the public library as a space, place and experience
Cartwright, Helen
AC. Relationship of LIS with other fields .
CB. User studies.
The book superstore is promoted not just as a place to buy books but also as a community resource in which to read, learn and socialise: traits that have in combination traditionally been the preserve of the public library. This study investigates the impact of the bookstore environment on public library space. The attitudes and behaviours of library and bookstore users were examined through focus group interviews and a self-completed questionnaire. Clear areas of overlap in the functions of the two sites were found, as was evidence of age and income-related splits in use and perception of bookstores and libraries. Results suggest attention should be paid to the beliefs and behaviours of young people and middle-income earners (the groups most noticeably increasing their use of the bookstore) and to the desired balance of education and recreation in the image and nature of the public library.

The value of the remote user`s satisfaction, expectations and perceptions, are determined by the new aspects related to the new interfaces of information. Because of this, the analysis of the remote user`s satisfaction has to consider, not only, the remote user´s habits and attitude towards the acccess interfaces to the services that the library offers through remote access, but also the user`s experience, as a way to measure the user´s satisfaction.

Alfabetización digital de tesistas y tutores en el Instituto de Farmacia y Alimentos de la Universidad de La Habana

CB. User studies.
The students, after long studies, become thesis makers, this faces them to the need of producing a thesis document and to look for a tutor. To choose the thesis topic is the first problem. This is an easier task where there are scientific leaders and researches are carried out, where this is not done, to choose a topic can be more complex. A way to make it easy is by means of the introduction of curricular studies and thesis seminars. Another one is to introduce the cooperative work at the web, increasing relations between students-students, students-tutors, students-collaborators, tutors-tutors and collaborators-tutors. These work enviroments which are collaborative at web, make indispensable that thesis makers and tutors are digitally literate, premise that is not always fulfilled. For that reason, the Digital Literacy has been introduced in Cuba in the thesis seminars for students of the last years of university careers and doctor thesis and master degrees. The content is the following: Tools for the search of information in the website; providers of bibliographic references; tools for the production of digital information; creation of Personal Digital Libraries (PDL). After digitally teaching the 5th year students of Science and Technology of Food and those of Biotechnology Master Thesis, the immediate results have been: increase in several times of the amount of search for information on remote database and a discreet increase of the production of PDL.

Affective and Cognitive Information Behavior: Interaction Effects in Internet Use
Nahl, Diane
CB. User studies.
The presence and influence of affective variables in information behavior was studied. Affective load (AL), a compound variable consisting of uncertainty and technophobia measures, was found to be present in a variety of simple and complex information tasks integrated into upper-division, disciplinary coursework. Affective load was higher in those who reported low values of affective coping skills and who had either high or low cognitive assessment scores. Affective coping skills (ACS) consist of self-efficacy (SE) and optimism (Op) measures. High self-efficacy and optimism have been found to significantly and beneficially influence success in a variety of information tasks, by counteracting the effects of negative emotions such as irritation and frustration. In this study, high coping skills provided a significant affective advantage as indicated by higher optimism, stronger self-efficacy, lower uncertainty, higher support and acceptance of the system and lower affective load. The group with high cognitive skills reported significantly higher optimism, higher affective coping skills and higher felt exercise of control, demonstrating an interaction between cognitive and affective skills. There was a distinct advantage for those who had both high affective coping skills and high cognitive skills. They experienced relatively low affective load and high acceptance of the system.

Multimodal Trivariate Thematic Maps with Auditory and Haptic Display
Jeong, Wooseob
ID. Knowledge representation.
CB. User studies.
LZ. None of these, but in this section.
The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of multimodal trivariate thematic maps by utilizing auditory and haptic displays. With two different modes of display (color only displays and multimodal displays with color, audio, and haptic), the completion time of tasks and the recall (retention) rate were measured in two separate experiments. In terms of the completion time, with minimal learning experience, participants could accomplish the tasks at the same level of speed in both modes. For the recall rate, multimodal displays have much higher recall rates. It is speculated that the natural quantitative hierarchies in auditory and haptic displays provide an advantage in the use of multimodal displays. These findings confirmed the possibility of using auditory and haptic displays in visually dominant geographic information systems (GIS) for multi-variate thematic maps.

Dual-Task Performance as a Measure of Mental Effort in Searching a Library System and the Web

This paper examines a dual-task method for the assessment of mental effort during online searching, having the users
engage in two tasks simultaneously. Searching was assigned as a primary task and a visual observation was set up as
a secondary task. The study participants were asked to perform two searches, one on the Web and the other in a webbased library system. Perceived search difficulty and mental effort for searching on the two types of systems were
compared through participant self-reports, dual-task performance, and search log analysis. After the searches were completed, the subjects reported that library searching was more difficult to conduct and they had to concentrate more than when Web searching. However, the results of dual-task performance do not reveal much difference in mental effort or concentration during searches in the two systems. Rather, they invested mental effort differently when viewing search results and reading retrieved documents. The findings indicate that a dual-task method provides a useful technique to measure mental effort in online searching, and it has a great potential to be used to measure other aspects of information retrieval such as task complexity and multitasking information behavior.

From a user-centered and task-specific perspective on relevance, we studied the relevance criteria used by teachers - an understudied but important group - who were searching for materials to use in the classroom to support learning on a particular theme. We observed teachers planning lessons and searching an archive of videotaped Holocaust survivor testimonies; the archive was
created by the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation who interviewed 52,000 survivors and systematically cataloged the resulting testimonies. The teachers used a collaborative process to design lesson plans
and search for appropriate testimony passages; they employed an array of relevance criteria that pertain specifically to teaching. The objectives implied in their criteria correspond to the teaching objectives described in lesson plans and teacher interviews, including connecting with students, representing diversity, and teaching tolerance. Our findings suggest user-oriented design approaches that support retrieval of instructional materials and collaboration in line with the needs and knowledge of teachers.

Beyond ‘Needy’ Individuals: Conceptualizing Information Behavior
Olsson, Michael
BA. Use and impact of information.
CB. User studies.
Understanding information users and their behavior is a question of central importance for information
research and practice. The paper challenges several aspects of existing approaches to understanding information behavior, including: the focus on individual cognition at the expense of social and affective factors; the construction of information users as defined by their areas of ignorance and uncertainty, rather than their expertise; and the focus on purposive rather than non-purposive information behavior. It argues that only by addressing these weaknesses and developing new research strategies and theoretical frameworks which focus attention on the social processes and relationships which underpin users’ information behavior can we hope to develop a truly holistic understanding of the relationship between people and information. The paper uses the author’s study of information behavior researcher’s constructions of an author (Brenda Dervin) to illustrate how a social constructivist approach can both build on existing approaches to information behavior research and address some of their weaknesses. It argues that social constructivist approaches provide a theoretical lens through which information researchers can gain a clearer picture of information users not as ‘needy’ individuals to be ‘helped’, but as social beings, experts in their own life-worlds.

The research reported here focuses on the users' information seeking behavior. Set in the framework of the interactive
information retrieval paradigm, the research examines the micro-dynamics of the information seeking process, and
explores search stages that users pursue as they proceed to solve their information problem. The research analyzes the
users' information seeking behavior as they move between search stages, and looks for patterns in the transition. The
observed shifting behavior allows for examining the question of predictability. The observed shifting patterns lead to
the development of a new model for information seeking behavior that describes multiple search stages, aspects and
dimensions. The model represents a non-linear process of multiple re-iterative cycles that make up the overall flow of communication with the information system. The model expands significantly earlier theoretical and empirical models as it represents a series of re-iterative processes that characterize the information seeking interaction.

The purpose of this study was to examine the navigational patterns of graduate students’ text markings when they
interact with electronic documents during an active reading process, thus taking on the role of authors. The readings
took place in two settings, private and document sharing, where in the latter environment each document was shared
among a group of students. The resulting interaction was monitored and electronically logged for each of these
environments, which then provided us with user-navigational pat-terns taxonomy. Descriptive and statistical tests were
carried out on the activities observed within this taxonomy to develop a framework for comparing the reading patterns
for readers working in individual and document sharing environments. This framework was then used to obtain user
feedback during the interview sessions that were held with the participants of this study. Because of our investigation, we were able to create a set of specific recommendation that system designers can use in order to create better, more intuitive, and user-friendly electronic reading and marking systems.

This paper describes the role annotations played in evolving and growing the value of a research database in the framework of an historical geographer's information seeking process. The database was designed as a "note-taking" tool for gathering historical evidence from primary source documents. The individual facts collected at first provided little utility to the researcher, indicative of Buckland's (1991) information-as-thing. As the process of collecting data began to amass a large body of material the geographer's information needs grew as new connections were made between the accumulating annotations.

Searching the intranet: Corporate users and their queries

By examining the log files from a corporate intranet search engine, we have analysed the actual web searching
behaviour of real users in a real business environment. While building on previous research on public search engines, we apply an alternative session definition that we argue is more appropriate. Our results regarding session length, query construction and result page viewing confirm some of the findings from similar studies carried out on public search engines but further our understanding of web searching by presenting details on corporate users’ activities. In particular, we suggest that search sessions are shorter than previously suggested, search queries have fewer terms than observed for public search engines, and number of examined result pages is smaller than reported in other research. More research on how corporate intranet users search for information is needed.

The change in the educational thought, the rapidly growth of scientific information, that are storeed in electronic form, and finally the expansion of technological knowledge have as results new challenges, concerning their role as basic tool of educations and knowledge Management, for the academic libraries to take place. During the last decade the collaboration between librarians and academic instructors has been enhanced, aiming to incorporation of information literacy into academic study programs.
Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when Information is needed and has the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”
In this paper we attempt an investigation on Greek academic libraries’ status related to their users’ education and on programs that can be applied in collaboration with the rest of academic community. In addition we present the ways of productive interaction between librarian and educational personnel for the improvement of information literacy.

About half of the adults in the U.S. read at the 8th grade level or below (Kirsch, Junegeblut, Jenkins, & Kolstad, 1993). Yet most websites are written at the 10th grade level or higher. The goal of this two-year study, sponsored by Pfizer, was twofold: 1) to understand the differences between the reading and navigational strategies of users with medium to high literacy skills and those with lower literacy skills; 2) to learn how to make web-based medical content usable and accessible for lower-literacy adults, and to develop design principles that could be used to design websites that would meet the needs of both higher and lower literacy users.

Open Access Through the User’s Looking Glass

Open access archives, repositories, directories and digital libraries spread widely as a result of technologic interventions and a reaction to demanding and competitive economical conditions. Although these innovative systems, that challenge traditional structures of the publishing economy, have rapidly developed, little significance has been given to the user interaction within their frames. All system developments and collection growth policies have been based on stakeholders’ view of the information management; users’ participation in evaluation, feedback and design is quite limited. Open access systems and their acceptance is not solely based on the integrated technologies, the innovative marketing policies and the economical convenient schemes, but requires the complete support and acceptance by the end users themselves. This presentation aims at providing a user-centred looking glass to view, to assess and improve the effectiveness of E-LIS’ usage. Based on an Interaction Evaluation triptych framework this presentation introduces particular user-centered evaluation axes for E-LIS and correlates the effective user interaction with its acceptance and promotion.

At the time of the Budapest Declaration, self-archiving supporters looked like a revolutionary, "anti-commercial publishers" movement. Today, after some years debate (and technological innovation in research and scientific e-publishing), antagonist positions are able to compromise and consider the tradeoffs.
What is really changing in the Authors' attitude towards institutional or disciplinary repositories, and peer reviewed open access journals?
Many recent papers have investigated these topics. From these sources we can note that Biomedical Authors behave differently from Physicists, Astronomers and Mathematicians, who have been using open archives for such a long time. Therefore we intend to analyze these different trends in the diverse communities.
Several aspects also deserve a careful attention: the role of new OA journals in evaluation processes (i.e. their impact and citations), implementation and maintenance costs of institutional repositories, the evolution of bibliometric indicators.
We intend also to discuss the role of libraries in service innovation and e-publishing promotion. The main areas where a key role may be played are: institutional repository management and users' training, the promotion of OA journals and information about evaluation methods (both qualitative and quantitative).
We think that the transition towards new communication models may be a great opportunity that libraries have to be ready to support.

Information literacy for individuals means that should be aware of the fact that information is essential for problem solving and decision making and also they should know how to access and use Information and furthermore integrate this experience in their daily life. It is imperative that different information literacy programs be prepared in order to make ali individuals information literate in a society. Effective information literacy programs could be developed through coordinated activities oflibrarians, educators, associations and cultural institutions. This article deals mainly with the essence of Information literacy, its importance and contributions to the individual and society for lifelong learning, and also the role oflibrarians they play in the creation of a Information literate society.

Versions in the lifecycle of academic papers - user requirements and guidelines for digital repositories

HS. Repositories.
An academic research paper evolves through various stages during its lifecycle, for example from early conference presentation through working paper to final published
refereed journal article. Different versions can co-exist in publicly available electronic form. Finding out researchers’ attitudes towards storing, labelling and
making accessible these different versions, both of their own and of their peers’ work is at the heart of the VERSIONS Project, funded by the JISC under the Digital
Repositories Programme.
The project addresses the issues and uncertainties relating to versions of academic papers in digital repositories. By including a user requirements study, the project will clarify the needs of researchers and other stakeholders for deposit, storage and accessibility of different versions in the lifecycle of a digital resource. In addition to looking at user needs, the project will analyse researchers’ current practice in terms of retention of author copies of their own material. This investigation into current practice will reveal the extent of available suitable versions for deposit in digital repositories.
The user requirements study and the investigation into current practice will feed into a third strand of project activity which will develop a toolkit of guidelines
and will propose standards on versions. This activity will be carried out in coordination with the JISC and working with relevant metadata standards, publishing and OAI communities.
The project has a focus on eprints in the subject discipline of economics and takes a comparative view by drawing on established partnerships and experience with European libraries specialising in economics.

At the University of Auckland the University Library has been a strong voice in lobbying for a more coherent and integrated approach to developing computer and information literacy skills across the university. Several plans and reports such as the Academic plan, draft IT and Information Literacy policy, graduate attributes and recommendations from the Student Life Commission and Curriculum Commission highlighted the need for collaboration between stakeholders to put plans into action. Progress in implementing recommendations and developing initiatives had been slow until the opening of the Kate Edger Information Commons at the end of April 2003. The Kate Edger Information Commons very quickly became the heart of the City Campus and a catalyst for change and collaboration. The Information Commons, the University of Auckland’s leading edge student-centred learning facility, provides a collaborative interdisciplinary environment where over 500 full-productivity workstations, electronic classrooms, and an additional 500+ flexible study and social spaces have been combined with proactive, integrated learning support and e-Literacy skills development. It provides the infrastructure for the functional integration of the information and the technology services, information literacy, learning support and language skills development offered by the University Library, IT Directorate, Student Learning Centre and English Language Self-Access Centre, consequently creating an enhanced learning environment that reflects the transformations in higher education. The development of IT and information literacy (e-Literacy skills) is a key focus for the Information Commons and opportunities for skills development are integrated into all aspects of service delivery. The paper will look at new partnerships and new service models and initiatives that have arisen from the various collaborations, together with a growing integrated approach to e-Literacy development.

Knowledge about the culture of a user is especially important for the design
of e-learning applications. In the experiment reported here, questionnaire
data was used to build machine learning models to automatically predict the
culture of a user. This work can be applied to automatic culture detection
and subsequently to the adaptation of user interfaces in e-learning.

Two-dimensional maps are a valuable interface element for the visualization of information retrieval results or other large sets of objects. Various methods exist for the creation of these maps. This article describes a comparative evaluation of topographic maps based on “Kohonen Self Organizing Maps” (SOM). These results show that the mapping method has to be chosen very carefully and different methods should be tested for an application.

MyShelf is an information system for browsing based on the metaphor of a virtual library shelf. Like a traditional library shelf, it allows the exploration of the neighborhood of a document. Neighborhood represents semantic closeness which usually has many facets. In MyShelf, the ordering system of a shelf can be changed and the collection is reorganized on the fly. As a consequence, different neighbor-hoods of a document can be explored which al-lows the selection of an appropriate cognitive perspective. The user can rely more on the as-sociative nature of browsing in order to solve his vague information needs. An implementa-tion for information science content and its evaluation with user tests is presented.

Conventional policies do not map directly, but indirectly, onto digital ones with differences primarily due to the easy duplication properties of the digital content. We examine the functional linkage on conventional and digital policies of access, reproduction, library loan and inter-library loan. We map and compare the conventional to digital policies on the collections (conventional and digital) of ten leading academic libraries worldwide, showing their similarities, differences, advantages and disadvantages. We answer questions, such as, if the digital policies are transformation of conventional ones or they are new cases, if they are more liberal than conventional or restricted etc. Finally, we propose a policy model of access, reproduction and use for the digital content of academic libraries, according to factors, such as, the content creation type, acquisition method, intellectual property etc. The model, integrates already implemented practices, but also new policies that have not been implemented so far, and can offer solutions to the management of digital information and knowledge.

We analyze the use of the digital content of non-profit libraries, such as, national and academic, worldwide, as expressed through the restrictions of intellectual property and the knowledge management policies. We classify the policies according to factors, such as, the content creation type, its acquisition method and intellectual property, analyze their relationship and extract quantitative remarks. We propose a policy model of access, reproduction and use for the digital content of national and academic libraries. The model contains not only library implemented practices, but also, new, and not implemented so far, policies, which can offer solutions to management of digital information and knowledge; in addition, rules on policies supplemented by their exceptions. Two separate policy models, for the digitized and the born-digital, arise and presented respectively, and relevant conclusions that valid on each case are extracted. Finally, findings on policies, common, for national and academic libraries, and unique, are presented.

The impact of digital library service on scientific production of a media sized university : the University of Messina's experience

BA. Use and impact of information.
The university of Messina has been part of an
inter-university consortium (the CIBER consortium:
http://www.uniciber.it/fileadmin/user_upload/CIBER_presentazioneEN_apr2006.pdf) since 2000.
The consortium was set up in order to reduce the impact on university budgets of high costs of scholarly e-journals and A&I databases by sharing subscriptions between a number of institutions and by signing collective contracts with publishers.
Right from the outset, Messina U. has accessed the "Emeroteca Virtuale" digital library (E.V.), which distributes e-journal titles from a dozen commercial publishers, half of these available in full-text format locally. In the past year the "Centro di Ateneo delle Biblioteche" (CAB) of Messina U. has been working, together with CASPUR and the 'Istituto Superiore di Sanità', in the E.V. users statistics team, which aims to define a new environment for statistical data concerning E.V. usage of CIBER consortium users (mainly professors, researchers, and students belonging to those universities).
The result of this joint activity is a new web site showing the usage statistics for all the members of the CIBER consortium (34); the format for usage data is fully compliant with recent COUNTER project specifications
(http://www.projectcounter.org/). Moreover, through this web site it is possible to obtain a detailed view of E.V. usage data, including TOP style reports, analytical reports, subject categories classification and so on.
A new study has recently begun in order to analyze the possible impact of E.V. usage on the scientific production of professors and researchers. For the purposes of this study we intend to work on usage data from Messina U. The main idea is to identify a relatively long time period (the last two years) and a sample of the university population (from a single scientific discipline). From this starting point, we intend to analyze the usage data for journals belonging to that area, and to correlate those numbers with the number of articles published from scholars of that discipline in order to validate the hypothesis of a direct correlation between digital library usage and scientific production.
This presentation will illustrate the main features of the new E.V. usage statistics portal for the CIBER consortium and the approach we decided to adopt in order to carry out this specific study.

CIPACs (Card-Image Public Access Catalogues) are often introduced as interim or long-term alternative solutions to retrocataloguing. They originated in the USA in 1994, then spread to Europe. Little is known about user reactions, so in 2001 an exploratory survey was carried out on the WWW among 11 libraries in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Themes covered, questionnaire construction, implementation and fieldwork are described. Results were stored in a large data file.

As to design new strategies for the quality improvement of all services offered by the Marcel Roche Library (MRL) of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Investigations (IVIC) this work studies the beginnings and evolution of quality management improvement reviewing some of the studies presented by some of the most outstanding authors in this subject as well as analyzing the basic components and principles of the total quality management (TQM). This document also focuses on the analysis of the nature, evolution, characteristics and importance of current services inside the manufacturing industries as well as service industries itself.
Having these concepts in mind, service quality can be defined as a mayor factor in the progress of all corporations due to the increasing demands and expectation of costumers nowadays, they no longer evaluate quality as the final product but as the result of all processes involved in the delivering of the final product.
This paper also refers to the incorporation of the philosophy of quality services into the library scope, and marketing and strategic planning notions are studied as the concretion of management towards quality.
To determine the factors which affect service quality, elements of quantitative and qualitative investigations were used, employing direct observation, questionnaires and focal group interviews techniques, being the latter the mayor provider of real and instant information, which helped us identify the needs and expectations of users as well as the perception of employees of MRL. Conversations with both audiences allowed us not only to know their answers to each question but also to observe their reactions towards them, adding value to the interpretation of these answers by helping us identify emotional ties associated to the offering and use of services.
At last, as a consequence of the results obtained in this study of factors which influence the offering of services at MRL, nine application areas were defined for which specific strategies and actions were designed. Such areas are: personnel, organization, collection development, information recovery, documents reproduction, users education, physical infrastructure and technological platform, automated system of library management and marketing.

Reports on the results of the web-based survey of 320 users of card-image public access catalogues (CIPACs) in four countries, as described in part 1 of this article. CIPACs mainly attract users ("regulars") in the humanities. However, their search interfaces are not always easy to use, particularly for student users. CIPACs that offer alphabetical indexes for searching are accepted best; other features rated favourably are keyword searching of (OCR-processed) catalogue records, options for subject searching, and some sort of interface to circulation. Many users are not fully aware of the options their CIPACs offer. CIPACs are not seen as easier to handle than the old card catalogues; they are not used as frequently as "normal" OPACs. Obviously, the main advantage of CIPACs is their universal availability over the web.

Target population estimate. Indicator B.1.1.1 - User satisfaction.
Describes the statistical methodology of the University of Trento library's continuing project to apply ISO 11620 standards, both for estimating the library's target population, and for determining user satisfaction levels (performance indicator B.1.1.1) among students, professors, researchers, technical and administrative staff, and others. Explains the mathematical formulae for assessing target population figures and illustrates the user-questionnaire format. Early findings show user satisfaction with indicators such as collection resources, staff competence/helpfulness, and usability of catalogues and terminals. But there were too few Internet and CD-ROM terminals, and book copies.

This paper revises David Ellis's information-seeking behavior model of social scientists, which includes six generic features: starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, and extracting. The paper uses social science faculty researching stateless nations as the study population. The description and analysis of the information-seeking behavior of this group of scholars is based on data collected through structured and semistructured electronic mail interviews. Sixty faculty members from 14 different countries were interviewed by e-mail. For reality check purposes, face-to-face interviews with five faculty members were also conducted. Although the study confirmed Ellis's model, it found that a fuller description of the information-seeking process of social scientists studying stateless nations should include four additional features besides those identified by Ellis. These new features are: accessing, networking, verifying, and information managing. In view of that, the study develops a new model, which, unlike Ellis's, groups all the features into four interrelated stages: searching, accessing, processing, and ending. This new model is fully described and its implications on research and practice are discussed. How and why scholars studied here are different than other academic social scientists is also discussed.

Information seeking user behaviour on a web site can be analized through cuantitative and cualitative studies using search logs. Different experiencies involving search analytics are described. Also is studied its methodolgy, advantages for information seeking studies, key performance indicators, and its practical application to Information Architecture, improving Information Retrieval, internationalization of web sites, and as a help on seasonality future predictions using keywords search trends. Through several success stories, a better performance is observed, showing that a better hierarchical, alphabetical, or visual link organisation drives into a better information retrieval experience (browsing seeking), whereas internal search engine is less used, as a second option for information retrieval purposes (searching seeking) within several information spaces , integrating both user information search behaviour strategies.

La conducta informativa de los físicos: un estudio cualitativo de usuarios
Gómez, Nancy-Diana
CB. User studies.
The work analyzes information seeking behavior of students who are in the process of getting a PhD in Physics or who have recently done so. The analysis was made within the sense making approach which is centered in the user. An attempt is made to explain situations in the seek and use of information in terms of the sources, the relevance judgment criteria, organizational strategies as well as information presentation strategies. The study also looks at the physicists feelings during the information seeking process and the way the idea of information evolves in their minds throughout their PhD.

We study user behavior during the stage of the book selection process in which people study the content of a book to decide whether it will be useful for their intended purpose. 24 undergraduates participated in a balanced study in which they were given a topic-book pair and asked to decide whether the book was useful for the topic; we report on the accuracy of the participants’ decisions, the extent to which they use the table-of-contents and the index, and the impact of the medium on the book selection process. We discuss barriers to accurate book selection and consider what can be learned, at the applied and theoretical levels, from further study of this activity.

Attitudes of students who used Anadolu University central library were examined by means of a questionnaire, which was applied to 353 students. The results indicate that five factors (being expressed through 13 items) had substantial effects on book choice. They were the kinds of cover and paper being used, characteristics of dimensions and writing style, drawings and pictures, shape and colour of the cover, and the table of contents and references.
The results indicated that kind of cover and paper, and drawings within the text were statistically significant in determining the selection of book genres. Findings also comprised that book gender and academic study areas
affect the choices concerning table of contents and references. Conclusions that might be drawn are apt to imply clues for publishers on matters that attract
attention by the production of a new book.

Questioning LibQUAL+: Critiquing its Assessment of Academic Library Effectiveness
Edgar, Bill
A. Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information.
CB. User studies.
Advertised as a total market survey of an academic library’s users, LibQUAL+ has risen to prominence in recent years as a means of assessing academic library effectiveness. In light of this, this conceptual paper raises and addresses four questions arising from its survey instrument. Doing so reveals that LibQUAL+ only partially conceptualizes a library’s operations. Furthermore, it emphasizes users’ eventual outcomes, such as improved grades, but does not
explicitly conceptualize users’ more immediate need for epistemological value in the form of information, education, or persuasion. Finally, LibQUAL+’s survey correctly emphasizes the role of user self-reliance and satisfaction, but it unduly deemphasizes users’ need for professional information assistance and their actual experience of quality library service.

People engaged in knowledge work must often rapidly identify valuable material from within large sets of potentially relevant documents. Document triage is a type of sensemaking task that involves skimming documents to get a sense of
their content, evaluating documents to assess their worth in the context of the current activity, and organizing documents to prepare for their subsequent use and more in-depth reading. We have performed a study of document triage by collecting multiple forms of qualitative and quantitative data to characterize how 24 subjects read about a new topic and assessed and organized a set of 40 relevant Web documents. Our results indicate that there are multiple strategies for document triage, each involving different styles of reading, interacting, and organizing. Common strategies include: 1) focused reading early in the task,
relegating the organizing until later in the process; 2) skimming performed in tandem with organizing, which relies on gaining an incremental understanding of the topic; and 3) metadata-based organizing, a strategy that stresses working
with document surrogates to minimize the time spent reading. The findings suggest ways applications may better support the intertwined nature of the browsing, reading, and organizing activities in document triage.

A prototype system for the filtering and ranking of news items has been developed and a pilot test has been conducted. The user’s interests are modeled by a user interest hierarchy based on explicit user feedback with adaptive learning after each session. The system learned very quickly, reaching normalized recall values of over 0.9 within three sessions. When the user’s interests “drifted”, the system adapted but the speed with which it adapted seemed dependent on the amount of feedback provided by the user.

How Digital Library Services Contribute to Undergraduate Learning: An Evaluation of the “Understanding Library Impacts” Protocol
Rodriguez, Derek A.
DD. Academic libraries.
BA. Use and impact of information.
CB. User studies.
“Understanding Library Impacts” is a qualitative protocol designed to investigate the ways library services and resources contribute to undergraduate learning using interviews with librarians, faculty, and students. The Critical Incident Technique (CIT) is used in the student interviews to identify aspects of library services and resources that are critical to student success. The Revised Taxonomy of Educational Objectives is used to classify faculty goals for student learning and student interpretations of these goals. An alignment process using these data is proposed to connect library contributions to institutional goals for student learning. This paper reports on a pilot study conducted in 2005 at a liberal arts college to evaluate the protocol. Results of the pilot study suggest the protocol can detect library contributions to institutional goals for student learning. Future studies should be carried out to evaluate the protocol in other post-secondary settings. The protocol should be of benefit to libraries seeking to improve library services and to communicate library contributions to institutional goals to stakeholders.

Google Scholar, Amazon.com, Flickr, MySpace, social networking, open access, and easy retrieval of electronic resources and services create higher user expectations toward academic library collections and services. In this competitive environment of content providers and users’ growing expectations, academic libraries face a difficult task in providing the most satisfying ways of delivering content and services to their patrons. To what extend should libraries recognize the users’ information needs in the area of services and collections? Is it possible for libraries to fulfill users’ growing needs toward libraries collections and services? In searching for answers to these questions this article presents the LibQUAL +TM survey results that help to determine users’ satisfaction and expectations of the quality of library service. Assessment of service quality standards by library users is becoming a crucial element in future developments taking place in academic libraries. These developments will influence not only formats of existing services and collections but also will create demand for new organizational and spatial libraries’ structure, cooperation, and new integrated services and collections to fulfill educational and research universities’ missions.

OPAC vs. card catalogue: a comparative study of user behaviour
Sridhar, M. S.
CB. User studies.
Even though use studies of card catalogue are quite rare, use of OPAC has been extensively investigated since early 1980s. Yet there are not many attempts to conduct comparative studies highlighting the differences in use of card catalogue and OPAC of the same library (i.e., user population). This paper reports an attempt made to study use of OPAC of ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) library and compare the results with the findings of the study of use of card catalogue of the same library conducted 17 years ago. The paper not only brings various aspects of user behaviour about OPAC but also depicts the differences in user behaviour as well as the effects of technological changes from card catalogue (manual system) to OPAC (automated system).

The paper is based on empirical examinations of the group of 143 students undergraduate and second year of full-time courses in higher education of the Rzeszów University of around three subjects: Polish philology, history, mathematics and 30 researchers for 10 persons from mentioned above. In examinations they used the questionnaire form and it was a pilotage of bigger examinations. The examination was aimed at showing the Internet really will become the risk for functioning of traditional libraries, what students and researchers will choose the traditional book or its electronic version. And perhaps the Internet will happen only supplementing action of the traditional library.

The synonymy between source and origin, so clear for the journalists, it is not so for the scope of documentation. However, the task of documentalist is to offerg determined services to concrete users, reason why the adaptation effort will have to come from the information professional and not from documentalist, which does not have to derive in a carelessness on the part of the documentalist of its functions from trainer of good users. The formation of the user has to be considered like an interaction of necessities (documentary and to document) and not like an attempt of adaptation of user and its demands to our limitations, essentially intellectual. For that reason, it turns out to us somewhat complicated to get to discern what the concept of intelligence source is for journalists, considering source the individual or group that offers a certain information in a while, on a unexpected form or with premeditation, and in many cases treachery, making the communication with a certain aim (clear example is the information spilled by the press cabinets); also the generating geographic area of noticiables facts is considered like source in a while determined.

Considering information user education as an educational, pedagogical, and formative process that libraries should undertake based on the interests and information needs of the different types of users, this study presents the final results of research into the evolution and trends of user education in Latin America. The study was based on document searches and analyses and on the experience of twenty Latin American countries, with the objective of determining the development, application, and trends relating to user education programs in public and academic libraries. In general terms, the study begins with a conceptual view of the subject, the historical evolution in Latin American countries, and an approach from the pedagogical point of view. Later in the study, we re-examine the methodology and some of the results and analysis of the information provided by each of the libraries surveyed. This approach, combined with the points of view of experts in library science, made it possible to determine trends in user education in Latin America, to state a proposal for a pedagogical model. and to generate some guidelines or directions for carrying out user education programs. Though by no means definitive, these guidelines can provide a route that can be followed as developed, or modified in accordance with the characteristics of the information department in question, es decir, the setting and environment in which it is found. By this means, everyone involved can acquire and develop the abilities, competencies, and knowledge that enable the user to formulate and satisfy his information needs.

This is a study of some of the factors that most affect library performance, emphasizing that librariesdo not exist for their own sake nor do they survive in isolation. In the realm of special and academic libraries, one of the most important functions is that of satisfying user demand. In order for an administrator to plan and make decisions, evaluation becomes an important tool. This article reports on a research project carried out in the special library of the Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN) using the model of SERVQUAL, which identifies the difference between user expectations and user satisfaction with the services offered by the library. The study was carried out during the second semester of 2003, using an electronic questionnaire involving 620 users in the scientific community of IPEN, 80% of whom responded to the questionnaire. On the basis of the analysis of the results,it became evident that the services offered by the library approximate the ideal expectations of the users. Nevertheless, there remains room for improvement in some areas.

It would be truism to claim that it is impossible to do without electronic information nowadays. This fact is beyond question. The hybridization of libraries will undoubtedly
progress and it is likely that e-libraries will squeeze the traditional ones out of the market. In the light of what has been assumed the research on the behaviour and the reactions of e-information users to particular types of information appears highly indispensable. What shall we do research on and what methods shall we implement? This paper attempts to answer these questions as well as to apply already existing research on the Internet users for the use of the university library.

Getting closer to customers: the mushrooming of Alternative libraries in Yogyakarta,
Priyanto, Ida Fajar
CB. User studies.
In a developing country, children’s literature and children’s libraries are often neglected this situation extends even to elementary schools and public libraries. Librarians always say that the problem is budget constraint, but in fact the main source of problem is actually the lack of consideration of the issue by decision makers in the government or institutions and the absence of librarians’ ideas on the provision of services for children. Another major problem in a developing country is the absence or malfunction of a school library that results in children’s lack of reading materials. School children in a developing country often have to buy books from teachers and those are the only reading sources at school. They cannot go to the public libraries either, because they are in school when the public libraries are open; when they finish their study at school, the public libraries are closed. The rest of their time everyday, instead, is only spent by playing games instead of reading. Some young people in Yogyakarta initiated the so called "Alternative Libraries". Alternative libraries are libraries that do not belong to the government or local authority and are funded by private organizations or individuals. The term is actually an answer to the absence of reading facilities for children. Some of the alternative libraries are dedicated as special libraries such as the music library, arts library, anti-drugs library, women and children empowerment library; but some others are dedicated to children and the family. The existence of those libraries really attracts children to make use of the libraries. They do not always use the term "library" there is even one which is called "Book Monster". Those libraries for children belong to and were initiated by private organizations, but their existence has enabled children to get reading materials and to play. Commitment, dedication and the closeness of librarians and children are indeed the key to the success of the libraries for children.

CB. User studies.
The objective of this research is to discover library skills and computer literacy of new students becoming the users of The University Library of USU in academic year of
2002/2003. The results of the research indicate that, although majority of respondents (87 %) explained that they had ever used library before they are accepted as the new
students of USU, however their library skills are still not satisfied. Apparently even in the small percentage (13 %), there are new students of USU, which never used library, when they were still senior high school students. Basic information retrieval skills of new students of USU are still limited in seeking books in the library by title and author, while the ability in seeking books by subject, keyword and call number are possessed by minimum numbers of respondents only. Majority of respondent (57 %) are not able using online catalog, which is available in the library. Besides, general of respondents (89 %) are not able searching information using CD-ROM database. "Melek Informasi" kunci menuju sukses= Information Literacy, key for susccess
Ratnaningsih, *
CB. User studies.

As Greek academic libraries are being modernized in high speeds, their websites are evolving into important meeting points for the professionals in information management and the actual users of information. Despite their initial intent to help information flows the big amount of and the diversity of the data, usually results into an overload which distracts and often demotivates searching.
Studies focusing on website usability have increased significantly over the last years. The results of those studies reveal a wide range of usability problems like poor-defined terminolo¬gy and inappropriate use of colors. In addition, many websites do not redesign their appearance whenever they add new content or modify existing ones.
At our current research, we evaluated the website of a Greek academic library, using the methodology of "formal usability testing". Our research was based in a combination of obser¬vation and interviews and the test was applied in a typical, for the Greek standards, environ¬ment which was developed over the last years in the library of the Technological Educational Institute of Serres. Our sample consisted of 10 persons from 6 different departments, repre¬senting usual types of web users in a academic community, varying from experienced researchers to first year students with no web experience. We depicted 11 goals-searches and a couple of observers watched the users while searching in the website. The test took place in the actual library of the institution using the think-aloud method. These qualitative data were added to the quantitative data of a written questionnaire.
The analysis of the data revealed that the website was designed from the librarian's point of view, but not the user's. This test also resulted to another interesting point. That testing the usability of the website of an academic library is neither difficult nor expensive task and the results definitely improve its value. Therefore, we suggest that research in this field must be enhanced and usability testing must be applied broadly on Greek academic libraries, in order to improve their usefulness to the academic community.
