El estudio de las prácticas y las representaciones sociales de la lectura: génesis y el estado del arte
Gutierrez Valencia, Ariel
CF. Reading and story telling.
The act to read is as old as the act to write. Reading and writing are both instruments created by men 5000 years ago to preserve all the knowledge and ex-perience previously acquired and subsequently, to be able to transmit and communi-cate them to the future generations; all this, within the context of the diverse socie-ties in which reading and writing were organized to overcome the multiple dangers they were exposed to. Though the history of reading goes back various hundreds of centuries ago, the in-terest to study this phenomenon from different perspectives, specifically the ones re-lated to its practice, appropriation, modalities, socialization, benefits, places where is carried out, representations etc., initiates at the beginning of the 20th century. This was due to the rise of the sociology of the reading, branch that studies reading and its repercussions for the social tissue. This article presents the genesis and the development of the studies, representations and social practices of reading. It shows the main investigations carried out on the matter in Mexico, as well as the framework and theoretical and methodological ap-proaches employed for its executions.

The School-Library Programme, a reading promotion project initiated by the Bertelsmann Foundation in 1998 and celebrating its fi fth anniversary in 2004, starts now an extension phase so that new municipalities may have access to the experience gained in the implementation of this Programme by seven Spanish cities. The programme is a systematic and global approach to reading promotion integrating a great number of book-related activities and relying on a variety of both agents – professors, librarians, local coordinators, etc. – and spaces – educational centres, libraries, public spaces, etc. – to carry out the diverse actions of the Programme.

CF. Reading and story telling.
It presents the importance to provide a quality environment to the physical and virtual space intented to reading and to knowledge production at educational libraries (educational institutions and research centers). The libraries become a positive differential at the learning process. To the librarians some dynamic competences and abilities are necessary to promote and manage interaction spaces to readers at the reading world. How to facilitate an environment for the intellectual studies, meetings, debates with authors and readings exchange experiences, is primordial to transmit , to generate and to do knowledge innovation at different areas of knowledge. Understand the transitions between the books reader (paper) to the person that interacts in the video: the screen reader in the world wide web. Some questions about how and why librarians have to build up spaces to access and use information resources to provide information literacy in the worlds of images, words, hipertexts and hipermídias. Digital division impacts, access and use of information resources have to be considerated to the development and construction of the Knowledge Society.

Public Libraries, Children and Young People and Social Exclusion
Vincent, John
CF. Reading and story telling.
BD. Information society.
CC. User categories: children, young people, social groups.
CE. Literacy.
The paper begins by considering the dimensions of the social exclusion of children and young people, including poverty and its relationship with exclusion from school. It then reviews central initiatives in the area of children’s literacy. The paper then considers children’s use of public libraries, including access to library services and the effect of local and national initiatives on library provision. Challenges facing library services to children and young people (including school libraries) are considered. Stock selection is specifically discussed as a key means of making an impact on social exclusion. The paper then traces the transition from the outreach approach pioneered in the 1970s to a focus on building based services, followed, in turn, by an increased emphasis on education from the change of Government in 1997. Various initiatives are detailed, but it is questioned whether there is sufficient emphasis on social exclusion. It is concluded that services to children are often marginalised, for reasons such as non-mainstream funding, and that libraries are still institutions serving primarily the privileged. Public libraries therefore need to tackle social exclusion as their main purpose, and recommendations towards this end are made(May 1999)

This paper holds the hypothesis of the influence reading has as a way to favour the developement of new ideas, besides of writing and to increase culture. Through different academic stimuli provided to four groups they have been given the opportunity to discover the interest for reading and that they acknowledge its advantages. It is a preliminary exercise which leads to develop qualitative and longitudinal research to review the trascendence of reading from the point of view of those who obtained the benefit. Sridhar, M. S.
CF. Reading and story telling.
Presents selected results of studies on reading habit and book culture in different countries around the world. Highlights the important findings with statistics drawn from the studies on reading habit from countries like USA, UK, Japan, India, Malaysia and Nigeria. Lists and analyses the reasons for decline in reading habit like onslaught of electronic media, illiteracy and poverty. Points out that despite the increase in leisure time, income and expenditure on other forms of entertainment, there is no commensurating increase in expenditure on reading materials. Stresses the need for building book culture/ clubs and reading habit as a strong culture in the society.

This document is not an exhaustive research. It is simply an overview of the library which intends to make a general assesment of its current status in order to state an action plan for the next three months. But despite of the lack of being treated at depth, this document is made with the fine idea to manage the library in such a way which meets the overall Total Quality commitment of the whole institution which it is stated in the bibliography reviewed. It took a sole interview with Ms. Ma. Teresa Adell, Ms. Patricia Manzanares and Ms. Maribel Rivera Hurtado and also a half hour attending the library as a visitor and two complete working days. After three months this document will be surely assessed at depth.

Doctoral research proposal: an investigation of the role that school libraries play to promote the reading development amongst students from toddlers to adolescence. Thes project will research some of the barriers that limit the promotion of reading development. Amongst those barriers the most important is that there is no link between school libraries and the educational public sector where these libraries belong to.

Prácticas de lectura en prisión: estudio de actitudes y comportamiento de los reclusos en el centro penitenciario de Badajoz
Pérez Pulido, Margarita
CF. Reading and story telling.
DH. Special libraries.
Social research techniques were applied to determinate the attitudes and behaviour of users in deprived areas. An analysis based on a case-study was made of the characteristics of these users regarding their living conditions and surroundings. Our aim was to obtain a profile of this type of user which, associated to factors related with their reading habits, would permit us to determine reading practices acquired either through social or psychological conditions or from their surroundings, and thus contribute to the provision of more adequate planning of library services.

La biblioteca escolar como recurso central del aprendizaje : propuesta de formación en el centro educativo
Barnes Anco, Perla Noemi
CF. Reading and story telling.
DE. School libraries.
CE. Literacy.
A School Library is a valuable space, especially useful for the development of curricula and for developing learning abilities, as well as learning strategies that cannot be achieved elsewhere in the School Center. Only rarely in schools does the Library fulfil its potential function; generally it does not form a part of the cultural or school life of the institution. When a School Library exists, it often ends up in greater or smaller measure by being a wasted space. This situation is not improved by having a teacher who will open the door only occasionally, to supervise the loan of books or for cleaning the books in the bookcases! A fundamental change is required on the part of the teachers. They need to understand that a library should play a central role in the life of the school:
1. Transformation in the methods involved in the intellectual work necessary for integrating the library space in a systematic way with the development of the daily classes.
2. Awareness in the whole educational community - students, parents and teachers – that the library should form an intrinsic component of the work of the school, interacting with the different curricular activities in a dynamic way.
3. It would be important to arrange a training project for the teachers in the school, which would be committed to educational reform and which would take place communally with the specific objective of integrating the library into the academic life.
Such an initiative was introduced, over a period of two years, in the Public College Saavedra Fajardo in Algezares, Murcia, with the support of the directive and participation of the educational body. It resulted in rejuvenation of the forgotten library and it carried the flag for a renewed protagonism.

La enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura : análisis socio-histórico
Viñao Frago, Antonio
CF. Reading and story telling.
CE. Literacy.
Reading and writing, their teaching and learning, constitute two social and cultural practices, two skills in order to use, to teach and to learn in concrete contexts (among them those belonging to the school) which condition the nature of both activities, and the type of relationship that they keep up with the written culture. In this text a social-historical analysis of their teaching and learning is carrying out from the appearance of writing until the present time in relation to their social uses. Thus successively are analysed the first uses of writing, the consequences of the introduction of the vocalic alphabet in ancient Greece and the origins of spelling, the model of literacy in the “Ancien Régime”, its breaking during the final years of the XVIIIth century and beginnings of the XIXth, the changes implied by the rise of infant schools, the central role played by reading in the primary school, the school and social uses of writing in the XIXth and XXth centuries, and the problems set forth by the new illiteracies, the new languages and the erosion, in our days, of written mentality and culture.

The new world circumstances derived from globalization, economic regionalization, technological development and the generation of unlimited information of great scope, have initiated, at the beginning of the XXI century, what it is so called “The knowledge and information society”. This new society requires more critical people, with better education, and with a greater number of abilities and competences to face the future changes. Under these new perspectives reading is the key to introduce us into the innovative information era. This article states which the future sceneries for reading are and its requirements, according to the new world circumstances. At the same time, the article presents an extended analysis of the problems of reading in the Mexican society, considering relevant data produced by the latest investigations from national and international organizations, such as UNESCO, OCDE, SEP and the National Institution for Educational Evaluation. These investigations revealed, that nowadays, Mexico is a country with scarce number of readers, a country that does not have a reading programme to foment and promote the culture of reading. This is an issue that has not been attended sufficiently and professionally yet.

This paper focuses on the methods and techniques of verbal protocol as a methodological procedure used in researches on reading. The verbal protocol informs about the individuals own cognitive strategies during the execution of some reading tasks or while those are remembered and offers quantitative information to researchers. The verbal protocol has been an important tool to identify the metalinguistics procedures towards reading. It is necessary to be attentive to the methodology used to collect and analyze the data obtained during verbalization.

Mencerdaskan Bangsa : an inquiry into the phenomenon of Taman Bacaan in Indonesia

The thesis is originally written in English, and a full translated version in Indonesian is also available.
Since 2001, a movement of individuals, neighbourhood and community organizations and NGOs starting and running their own libraries has emerged in Indonesia. Called Taman Bacaans (TBs) - reading gardens - these simple libraries, often hosted in somebody’s house, or in a community building, provide easy and informal access to books, as well as frequent literacy programming. This thesis traces the historical heritage of these TBs back to the early renting libraries of peranakan Chinese in the 19th century, through Balai Pustaka and the public library movement under Sukarno. The modern TB emerges in the 1980s, the government attempts a wide-scale implementation of TBs in the 1990s, and a community movement finally emerges in 2001.
Using interviews with informants and newspaper articles, blogs, mailing lists, and NGO and government reports, I describe the process of how the TB movement emerges in Bandung and Yogyakarta. I also identify a number of factors that enabled and supported the movement: inspiring individual role-models, “best-case” libraries, networks and the roles of Islam and nationalism. Finally I provide an overview of the situation today, combining government statistics with the results of a survey conducted in Jakarta, and show that there are three kinds of TBs: those set-up by national, regional or local government (TBMs), those funded by large-scale donors, and independent TBs grounded in the local communities. I conclude with a number of recommendations for government and donors.

Crítica a la reificación del fomento de la lectura: recursos bibliográficos. Versión 001

This document (Critique to the reification of the promotion of reading: bibliographic resources. Version 001) compiles some bibliographic records of documents which criticise the reification of reading promotion. The aspects related to reading are important for the sciences of information recorded in documents. However, the professionals of information recorded in documents have fallen --consciously or unconscously-- in the reification of the reading promotion (as they have reificated almost all other aspects of the sciences of information recorded in documents). Here it is considered that such reification is dangerous for the advancement of sciences and humanities of the future generations since reading is just a means and not an end in itself for the users of information recorded in documents advance in their cognitive or aesthetic ends, and agreeing with Einstein's quote in the bibliography, if individuals only read to limit their creative capabilities on cognitive or aesthetic matters (as consciously or uncounsciously advocate the vast majority of reading promotion within the sciences of information recorded in documents) then they will fall into "lazy mental habits" and in the worst of the cases they will reify the process of reading by limitting it their creative, critical, analytical and synthetical capabilities.

CF. Reading and story telling.
This paper discusses ideas and proposals relating to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (competencies) in technology as an aid to the information and management training required of Colombian librarians in light of the challenges of today's society, and how our universities can integrate technology into their undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education. Three fields of action are considered in the area of information and knowledge management: (1) organizations that facilitate access to information and knowledge supported in TIC (modern information units, or U.I.); (2) organizations in the information sector in which the TICs are both a product and a medium of operation, and (3) organizations of whatever sector that need to manage information and knowledge supported in TIC. Two key library functions are related to such management: (1) organization, standardization, and transfer, and (2) user education (public, clients, and/or readers), whether internal, mixed, or external— in any of these three fields of action mentioned above

Student Learning through a Rural Community Library: A case study from Uganda

The purpose of this study is to explore and investigate the phenomenon of rural community libraries (RCLs) in Sub-Saharan Africa through an in-depth study of one such library located in Uganda. Specifically, it sets out to investigate the role of the RCL in relation to student learning. This is done by a thorough account of what the library offers, who the users are and what they do at the library. To approach the question of student learning through the library, the study includes two models on libraries‘ influence on student learning developed for a Western context.
The methodology covers both quantitative and qualitative methods to produce rich and varied data, but the main emphasis is on the latter. In addition to traditional data collection techniques, the study includes a kind of improvised action research that contributed to the range of data collected.
The library in question is above average in terms of materials and use, and its existence seems to increase the amount of reading, particularly the number of storybooks read by pupils. The secondary students, who are the focus of this study, mainly read their own notes, schoolbooks (pamphlets, textbooks and past papers) and to some extent fiction. This group does read more due to the library, it seems, especially schoolbooks, but the library‘s contribution to their learning beyond mere reading, such as study skills, use of reference works and co-operation, is somewhat limited. There are five conditions that work against the library having a full potential impact on student learning: the curriculum, the exams and the traditional way of teaching; lack of reading culture; lack of library tradition; limited resources; and the problems related to the language of instruction. Despite these limitations, by bringing books to a print-poor environment the library does make a difference.

Abstract:
On Ibero-America most of the readings plans are based on the directives given by CERLALC into the scope of ILIMITA. The “Plan Nacional de Fomento de la Lectura” of Chile must like intention improve the reality of the reading, and it has been formulated and implemented throughout a process that extends the short term. This process includes several phases (design, development and evaluation), and must be understood like a flexible proposal that adjusts and reconstructs based on the realities on which it is operating. In that sense the plan is visualized like an instrument to make specific and to fortify the public policies of reading and to articulate the efforts of all the institutions, as much public as prevailed that work around the promotion of the book, the reading and the libraries. The present work focuses in analyzing its phases of design, implementation and present state to object to give elements that allow having a complete notion of the Plan.

A festival for a multimedia library or a multimedia library for a festival? The municipal libraries of Chambéry and the Festival of the first novel
The Festival of the first novel and the Jean-Jacques Rousseau multimedia library are the result of a similar desire for development of reading in Chambéry at the end of the 1980s. While increasing in size and becoming institutionalised, the two organisations have in some ways become more remote. The town reading contract, signed in 2000, has been the occasion for a new coming together, which has led to some joint actions. The municipal libraries of Chambéry undoubtedly have at their disposal the most complete collection of first novels in the French language, and these are as much borrowed as comic strips.

The work had as main basis for comparative analysis, research Portraits of Reading in Brazil, held in 2008 by the Office Pro-Book. The development work was based on quantitative and methodological procedures we adopted the questionnaire as a research tool. This study examines the possibility to promote and encourage reading in the community Neighbourhood Romeo Tortorelli, in São Carlos, through the sharing of a particular library installed in a residence. This research is justified in view of the development of social action community translated into reading activities as facilitator and disseminator of knowledge. It is considered that this action should not be restricted to governments, but a concern with the collective and citizen welfare. To this end, we sought to achieve the following objectives: to make the loan on an ongoing basis and to return the documents to users, aware of methods already developed in similar units of information, promoting incentives for reading practice through the provision of the acquis community, adding value to the community leading informational support and encouraging access to information; meet the information needs of users, promote the service offered to the community through posters on buses, clinics, schools and other communication vehicles. The methodology applied in this project was based on a largely qualitative analysis based on data collected by the application of interviews with residents of the neighborhood Romeo Tortotorelli and other areas of the city also benefited from the action of sharing. During the research, it was shown that the transformation of the community library collection in particular is extremely important because it sets up the process of information dissemination and promotion of cultural emancipation, social and citizen of the local population, with the possibility of the acquis come to be characterized as a valuable information center for the whole community, characterized by diverse informational needs, from cooking recipes to documental technical, scientific, poetic, artistic, including musical scores, photographs, etc.. The study has also shown that this kind of action can come from individuals who want to assist and cooperate with the intellectual and social development of a country, a community, a tribe or something similar. All things considered, it is understood that this library contributes to the formation of reading habits in the neighborhood and that the education of individuals need to emphasize reading as a means of social inclusion and improvement to their training. It is concluded that the main objectives were achieved, such as awakening the pleasure of reading, and provide informational support that meets the diverse needs of the community, to promote democratic access to reading and knowledge. It was realized how important it is encouraging the act of reading and how marginal communities value, substantially, the social actions that favor them.

The extension activity Itinerant Soiree: collective practices of eco-readings, developed in the neighborhood Romeo Tortorelli, part of the project with the same name and involves two other neighborhoods in the city of Sao Carlos / SP: Douradinho and Vila Isabel. This project is part of the University Extension Program PROEXT Culture, Ministry of Culture and Education. The motivation for conducting this project was the desire to resume the practice of literary evenings, characterized by the spoken word from the written word and the discussion of everyday life portrayed in literature. The Environment theme emerged from the need for change in attitude given the world reality inherent in this issue, and the option of making the activity in the house of community members, was the fact that 86% of readers of books actually read the book at home (research data Portraits of Reading in Brazil, held in 2008 and available in http://www.prolivro.org.br). The option of conducting the activities in these districts was motivated by the lack of public libraries. The development activities is the responsibility of teachers and students the DCI and the DL and cultural selected residents from each of the neighborhoods. Objectives: Main objective: to revive the reading habit to promote collective household integration between community knowledge and scientific knowledge, in order to develop reading skills, encourage critical thinking in everyday actions involving environmental issues in the neighborhood Romeo Tortorelli. Methodology: It is based on weekly meetings to prepare the activity, the selection of households, the disclosure of activity by the district, in welcoming the members (with explanation of the purpose of the meeting that day), and in that activity. For the realization there is a selection of books focusing on environmental issues, the preparation of storytelling and stimulate the participation of those present. The record of the meetings is done by means of textual annotations, images, videos, drawings and more. Finally, there is a loan of literary material and the closure of the completion of the activity. Results: Interest in thematic discussions involving the environment, proposed to the everyday life and improvement of living conditions, environmental, health and living in community, increasing the level of reading comprehension of texts and the quality of discussions; interest in actions that allow the creation of libraries; awareness about the importance of critical thinking, fostering relations of exchange between the scientific and technical knowledge and expertise and popular community. Conclusion: Actions in support of reading incentives contributed to the formation of this habit with the residents of the neighborhood. The goals have been achieved, such as awakening the pleasure of reading, group discussion of texts, exchange of knowledge on environmental issues. We can see the appreciation of the initiative by the residents.

This paper is based on a huge, robust evidence-based analysis of what people actually do in the digital space and not what they say they did or wished they did. This is important as most people have problems recalling what they did in the digital space; also, nobody wants to admit, for instance, that they do not spend much time reading. So there is no point asking them, but researchers still persist, and we should be very wary of research based purely on self-report methods. We need a new methodology, a non-intrusive one, to study behaviour in the anonymous and remote virtual space. To this end the CIBER research group obtains its data from the millions of digital footprints people leave behind when visiting a website or using a digital information service, irrespective of what platform they use - mobile, laptop, personal computer, digital television or touch screen information kiosk. CIBER have been collecting and making sense of these footprints for ten years using a methodology specially developed for the purpose, deep log analysis . The group has undertaken deep log studies in the media, education, publishing, health and charity fields and, most recently, in the cultural field (Europeana ). As a consequence, we have amassed an enormous evidence base, which is hard to neglect. As a consequence we now know what the information seeking and reading behaviour of millions of people looks like and the key characteristics are described in this paper.
Above all our data points to the fact that behaviour has fundamentally changed as a result of our migration to the virtual space and this includes reading. Although the writing has been on the wall for many years people are still in denial: they are clinging on to the old paradigm, believing that we have been here before (the arrival of printing is often mentioned in this context); but we have not; this revolution is on another scale.

The advent of postmodern social orders such as the Information Society offers new challenges and visions for the public library world. An example of this are the different names that have been visitors to library institutions, readers, users of information and now customers or consumers Along with this phenomenon library practices associated with the processes of formation of those attending the library have been modified, resulting in differentiation of the programas of users and readers. The public library must recognize the challenges imposed postmodernity without ignoring modern ideas on which is founded and which today constitute their social functions. This article aims to generate a proposal to
integrate in a single space both formatives processes where prevail reader condition of the human. The aim then perform an integrated and systemic view of library programs that will lead to integral human
development and in promoting the formation of critical and reflective human beings themselves and their environment from the proposed of a formation program readers-users

Perspectivas historiográficas de las prácticas de lectura
Pardo Rodríguez, Luis Ernesto
Gutiérrez, Rocío
CF. Reading and story telling.
In order to identify theoretical elements that could guide a conceptual and historical description of reading practices, this article includes the voices of authors, in themselves readers, who narrate and describe their own history of reading: Alberto Manguel, Roger Chartier, Michel de Certeau, Ana Teberosky and Guglielmo Cavallo (the practices of reading and reading); Robert Darnton, Peter Burke and Renán Silva (historical and historiographical foundations), and Giovanni Papini, Carl Sagan and Marcel Proust (reading spaces and stories about reading practices). There are three perspectives that base themselves on this. The first is the approach to silent reading as a milestone in the transformation of learning, of cognitive processes and of privacy. The second, the impact of the printing press on reading practices, a mechanical invention that made widespread the use of paper in the printing of texts and revolutionized the social, political, and religious conditions at the time, the access to information, the transformation of printing formats and the dissemination and production of information; and finally a conceptual approach, the research approaches from the perspective of practice and a historical approximation toward reading practices.

Book digitization is having a significant impact at all economic, business and legal levels. Concepts that had prevailed since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago have to be changed. With self-publishing, authors do not need publishers, and some indie (independent) are getting an enthusiastic public reception, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. For their part, publishers, who traditionally had been confined to one language and one territory, can easily reach a global scale with the advent of the e-book. Large multinational companies like Amazon and Apple have already landed in Europe, and soon they will arrive in the rest of the world. The e-book is not only a change from paper to digital but is also having a substantial impact on reading habits.

New Television Narratives: Entertainment Telling Citizenship Experimental

Broadcasting and industrial television is a trip back to the past to a space devoid of meaning and to the boredom resulting from its moral conservatism lack of creativity thought and entertainment. But television’s monopoly over public screening is over. Now anyone can be a producer an audiovisual narrator with his or her own screen.

Leer: un derecho…también en el hospital
Deberti Martins, Cristina
CF. Reading and story telling.
We approach the subject of reading as a complex phenomenon of construction of sense, and reconstruction of oneself, especially in situations of psychic and physical vulnerability as in the case of the hospitalized people. The role of the bibliotherapy is important as a possible tool to apply in the different health centers. The theoretical frame considered is the psychoanalysis (essentially the theory of Winnicott) and the anthropology of the reading (Michèle Petit). Experience of creation of library for patients in the Portal Amarillo is described (Centro de Información y Referencia en Drogas, Uruguay).

This chapter reviews various initiatives carried out by schools in 2010-2011 to improve reading skills. We establish some of the concerns and interests in the educational community as a result of new curriculums, a focus on skills, the PISA reports and other indicators. Of particular note are: the progressive implementation of school reading plans (PLEC in Catalan), the efforts of the Catalan Ministry of Education, through well-established projects such as El Gust per la Lectura (Enjoyment of Reading) or the Puntedu School Library Programme, and the creation of new initiatives such as L’Impuls de la lectura (Reading Promotion). In addition, we describe research carried out in the university environment and journal publications on the development of reading in the classroom. We also provide information on associations and foundations and even examples of the personal initiatives of some teachers who aim to boost students’ and teachers’ enthusiasm for reading.

Since free resources have been used, with technological models like this will advance our cities with little investment in its cultural and tourist promotion

This contribution describes how the Montessori method can be applied to the organization, management and use of a school library. In a Montessori school of Rome, the Centro di studi montessoriano has made a video which shows this project. The idea comes from two considerations: a) the experience appears as a potential "best practice" transferable in educational and school contexts operating on the basis of a child-centred learning environment; b) the pedagogical approaches adopted may stimulate teachers to reflect on their daily professional practice, giving ideas for an educational activity ready to reconsider in a different perspective children’s central role and their training needs.

This article presents the results of an investigation into the reading habits of
adolescents attending high school in Rio Grande-RS. Thus, we applied a questionnaire that asked the frequency of reading among young people, what they think about reading and how the contact occurs with written documents. The questionnaire took place in three schools and three private schools of secondary education, totaling 430 young people. It was found that adolescents have the reading habits and the type of school was not as decisive factor for the reading practices of adolescents surveyed.

strategies to enchant new readers. Strategies for pregnant mothers, babies, first readers, teenagers, adults and seniors. It also provides elements to work reading
strategies in the classroom, the school library and the public library. Finally provides tools for the mediator to be positioned against the potential reader.

Leer y escribir en la universidad: tarea pendiente / Reading and writing at university: a work in progress

GH. Education.
We start from the assumption that both reading and writing are cultural practices and strategies for learning and knowledge building, crucial to the student’s academic and personal education. The aim of this work is to reflect on the social and cultural contexts in which these practices
are enacted and the reality of reading and writing at the university level. It briefly outlines experience on this subject gained at the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of Zaragoza in the 2010-2011 academic year. It is concluded that academia provides superficial practices of reading and writing rather than education truly dedicated to critical thought.

Growing Readers at Storytime: A critical analysis of Canadian library website content about early literacy
Prendergast, Tess
CC. User categories: children, young people, social groups.
CE. Literacy.
CF. Reading and story telling.
Public library websites can provide important information about storytimes and other early literacy content for parents of young children. This presentation will summarize an academic study of 20 urban Canadian libraries’ web content aimed at parents of young children. The researcher sought evidence that libraries reflect diversity through their web content about early literacy. The results of the study suggest that libraries are not using their websites to their full potential to promote and support early literacy within diverse communities. By using examples of text and images taken from the data she gathered, the presenter will emphasize a number of recommendations for public libraries to consider.

DC. Public libraries.
The present article addresses the development of information competencies from the public library. This comes as a result of an investigation related to the construction of an Information Literacy (Alfin, for its initials in Spanish), a proposal that fits the needs and demands that society has placed on the public library, regarding the qualification of citizens in different competencies to access the information and use it to
face problems or daily needs. In consequence,
the proposal is a methodological contribution in
planning, implementing and assessing this type
of programs from the public library. First, there
is a theoretical review of concepts related to the
development of Alfin, especially in the field of
the public library; then, there is a review of the
methodology implemented in the investigation,
which allowed recognizing the elements that
make part of the elaboration of the Alfin Program
(context, structure, bases and methodological
proposal). Finally, the results of the investigation
are related to an information literacy proposal
that allows developing competencies in the
management of information generated in the
public library.

The first parts of the paper are devoted to terminological and historical introduction to the problem of hermeneutic theory. Origins of hermeneutic theory, which consist in an effort to detect the true, original sense and meaning of the text, can be seen in antiquity. Philosophical hermeneutics as a sophisticated philosophical conception of hermeneutics occurs in the 20th century in the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer, which is also decisive for any subsequent philosophical conception of hermeneutics. The core part outlines some mutual contexts of problems of information and information science and problems of (philosophical) hermeneutics as well as their differences. Concretely, this part deals with problem of information and information resources considered as one of the subjects of philosophical hermeneutics, the problem of language (or speech) considered as the main subject of philosophical hermeneutics and information science, too, and the problem of history considered as a set of existing creations of the human spirit in confrontation with problems of informetrics, bibliometrics and scientometrics. Next part deals with possibility of usage of hermeneutics as "not counting" method of the humanities. Following final section deals with possibilities of usage of hermeneutic theory in "not counting" information science, which aim could be detecting problems of information and information resources in the context of the problems of the universe.

This paper presents the school library from two
perspectives. The first is related to the constant
renewal in the field of information technology
and communication; the changes have turned
the physical library into all kinds of virtual libraries
and books have become digitized texts and
hypertexts that link words and realities. The
second one considers libraries and the possibilities
contained in them as open and flexible
spaces that can become a privileged learning
environment. Training students who are readers,
researchers, creative and critical is the task of
the teacher who plans connections between subjects,
who designs sequences and instructional
units with which the students have the opportunity
to approach the treasure of inherited tradition,
to delve into it and to renew it. References

The research project focused on acknowledging the reading practices of students from the Information Systems, Library Science and Archiving program in three specific semesters of curriculum, I and II, V and VI, IX and X. The goal of the project was to identify the reading practices of students as a presentation of the panorama of conceptions on the reading practices, which emphasized the motivating elements, the time dedicated to reading, purchase of books, spaces and places for reading and, finally, an exploration of reading in new formats. During the development of the research, the following phases were executed: first, the design of the survey; second, software selection and design of the application to generate the survey in a virtual space; third, selection of a representative sample of students, conduction of a pilot test with IX semester students for instrument adjustment and consolidation of the sample; fourth, analysis and interpretation of the gathered information, and finally, the presentation of the outcome.

This article addresses the use of image as a didactic element in the user training processes developed by the public library, specifically in the range between the ages of 5 and 7. In this sense, the research started from two basic concepts: the user training program and its connection to the use of image as a didactic element in a teaching learning space, “the public library”. First of all, the paper proposes a number of conceptual clarify cations and articulation links related to the user training, didactic and image processes; then, an account of the methodology implemented in the development of the research is made, which helped to identify the emerging reality around the practices implemented in the user training programs and the role of image and didactics in teaching learning spaces; and, finally, the outcome of the research is established, in relation to image as didactic element and an articulating axis in the design of user training programs.

Much is discussed about the role of the librarian as a mediator reading, especially in the school environment. However, little is talked about teenagers's interests of reading, usually emphasizing only the children's reading. Facing the few studies on this public so unique and demanding with regard to reading, is then proposed to exploit the category of children's literature called Gamebook, which enables the marriage of playful and reading, offering potential for discussion interactivity of the act of reading literature. Initially, we discuss about it most common types and it characteristics in relation to other books. It also carried out a brief history of the Gamebook around the world and in Brazil, focusing it origin and similarities with the practice of RolePlaying Game (RPG). Later we discusse the potential of Gamebook for understanding literary reading. Based on these considerations, it is held to reflect on the theory of reading about the characteristics of literary reading in order to base the proposal to use the Gamebook as one of the types that best highlights reading features, due to its internal dynamics. At the end, we suggest that Gamebooks can be worked by reading mediators not only as an indication of reading for young people, but also through actions in the library to discuss its potential for conscientizing the process of literary reading.

The design of the reading promotion program conducted by the NGO Fundación Bella Flor, presents different strategies to promote reading, based on the strengths and weaknesses identified in the Foundation and the child population between 6 and 10 years of age. Knowing this information was made possible through the implementation of two basic tools: diagnosis by skilled observation and survey reading. Results from these tools, constituted what would be the key objectives of the program. Also, they tried to take the Foundation project called the “Toy Library, to rethink librarianship from a perspective for the project” Foundation Library “within the toy library official. In addition to the strategies that will offer tools to perform planning, monitoring and adjustments needed to give continuity to the points made in the program.

This article presents a diagnostic of libraries in the penitentiaries of Bogotá such as Women Penitentiary “El Buen Pastor”, Judicial Penitentiary of the District of Bogotá “La Modelo”, Central Penitentiary of Colombia “La Picota” and Distrital Penitentiary for Men and Women annexe. Based on the diagnostic study this paper proposes a strategic plan to implement library services and programs in order to improve re-socialization processes, life quality, identity reconstruction, space appropriation and dynamic roles within the society. This is an applied descriptive research, using the following data collection tools: observation, interviews to officials, surveys to inmates as real and potential users of libraries. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations are posed to initiate discussions and academic and State actions leading to solve this social problem.

Lego ergo sum. Über die Unverzichtbarkeit des gedruckten und digitalen Lesens im 21. Jahrhundert

CF. Reading and story telling.
Lego ergo sum. About the indispensibility of printed and digital reading in the 21st century (translation of the title). With the boom of the digital media sector, reading as a cultural activity is currently undergoing profound changes. The e-book is a fine example to show that the international book and media industry are beginning to merge. A controversial question is whether the digital book has the potential to become a serious competitor for, or may ultimately replace, the printed book. While the digital media enjoy a high level of popularity especially among young people, a survey conducted in June 2013 has revealed that many people dislike reading on the screen for several hours. There are many signs which indicate that digital reading will assume growing importance in the future and become an integral part of knowledge enhancement. But the omnipresence of the digital media in people's daily work life may also nourish the wish to put distance between themselves and the electronic media, and make more people resort to the printed book in their leisure time.

HO. e-books.
The history of writing is the story of the socialization of the same; the invention of printing increased exponentially, audiences and even the available vocabulary of several thousand words in the fifteenth century, a million today; similarly arrival has greatly amplified ebook reading skills thanks to the social nature of content that link into the shared culture of the web 2.0 philosophy. This juxtaposition of their border lines created new and changing spaces in the book concept has spread to previously unexplored territories, which in turn is affecting their visibility. If you often shows that the advent of digitization is destroying the books and reading, general literacy practices are increasing. Now more people write, the more people read, most authors publish across different genres such as blogs or social media networks. And at the mercy of all these changes the concept of book changes.

"Towards processes of critical and reflexive reading before the invasión of the informational capitalism in universities." Abstract: Analyzing the activity of the Interdisciplinary Seminar Club of the Word (Faculty of Humanities and Education, University of Zaragoza) in particular one of its activities, Leer entre líneas which seeks to promote intellectual activity around readings of selected works, allows us to reflect on reading at university level beyond their curricular design as a cognitive tool for managing information. Rather, it claims the epistemic potential of reading and writing, to decode and debate discourses and the ability for the reader to take position itself as conscious subject into reality. The paper, that includes a lecture that was held in the Bachelor of Information and Documentation of Zaragoza University, on march 2013, also aims to contextualize the role of the library in the educational system, as well as to claim a more engaged library practice both intellectually and socially.

Promoción de la lectura en zonas urbanas de Lima: El caso del servicio Casero del Libro de la Biblioteca Municipal de Miraflores

This research aims to provide certain lines of work for reading promotion in public libraries. It seeks to document and analyze a successful experience of reading promotion in order to identify best practices that can be replicated in other contexts. This study case focuses on the reading promotion service called "Casero del Libro" (market seller of books), driven by the Municipal Library of Miraflores in Lima. Variables related to reading practices and the service provided and their impact on the target audience, market sellers, are analyzed. It seeks to distinguish the characteristics of a reading promotion service of a public library so that it is more accessible to its public; it seeks to synthesize the best practices of this particular service.
The overall objective of the research is to understand the main characteristics of a successful experience of reading promotion developed in a public library in Lima; while specific objectives are to identify the most relevant strategies of reading promotion employed in this experience and to identify the changes in reading habits of the users of this service.
The research begins with the following research questions: What are the objectives of a reading promotion service in non-traditional places offered by a public library? What are the main features that should have a reading promotion service to be successful in Lima, Peru? What strategies were used in the creation of the reading promotion service? What strategies could be replicated to promote reading? Why users participate in the service? What do users think about the reading promotion service? Have they changed their reading habits during the years of service? What do users think about books and reading?
We worked with the following assumptions:
• The public library approaches its potential users through reading promotion services in non-traditional places, while doing so it accomplishes two goals: to instill reading habits in adults and to attract adults and their families to the library.
• The most important strategies to promote reading in adults are focused on a personalized service and the use of oral language as motivators for reading.
• Users participate in this service because reading is useful for them, on a personal and family level, as in the workplace.
In summary, all proposed hypotheses are true, except that in this study case, the library fails to attract new users for its institution, meaning the users of the service "Casero del Libro" only use the service, but do not go to the library after that.
The research is qualitative; interviews with users and librarians (managers and service librarians) were performed. Qualitative methodology was chosen because with this work seeks to understand the perceptions of the different actors of the service and this methodology allows to collect the wealth of imagination, opinions and points of view of people. Interviews were conducted with 19 market sellers and 5 librarians during 2008 and 2013 in Lima. The main limitation of this study is that since a qualitative methodology was used, this case study includes only the experience among actors of this service.
