This paper aims to analyze the process of internationalization of undergraduate programs at the national and global context, seeking to identify trends and challenges in Library and Information Science. This is a theoretical study built upon a literature review. Initially, we present an overview of academic internationalization. Then, we discuss relevant aspects concerning the internationalization of education in library and information science (LIS), based on articles and selected information sources. It is observed that in Brazil there is only one article dealing on the topic. In conclusion, general recommendations are presented. At the final, references are presented (with abstracts) of the main articles about the topic published in the 2000s.

For more than 10 years the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland has educated specialists in the field of librarianship, documentation, and information. Firstly, this paper reviews the degree program 'Information Business' which is phasing out. Some showcases of careers of alumni are provided. Following that, the changes in the curriculum of the new bachelor course of the same title and the additionally established graduate program 'Applied Knowledge Management', both starting in winter semester 2005/06, are described. Finally, an outlook and further plans concerning the study programs are presented.

There is a special insight into the labour market description and requirements and the training provided by this career. The most common methods for approaching this subject are presented, and some typical examples are offered. An analysis of the Spanish labour market, as far Archives, Library and Information Science are concerned, is carried out based on the job offer data compiled at the Library of the Faculty of Translations and Information Science of the University of Salamanca. Which data are published on an e-mail list called InfoDOC. The methodology used to compile the data is clearly explained and there is an assessment of several aspects such as the number of work placements according to the professional category, employers, the number of work placements according to the field, job stability, the qualifications needed and the geographical area. The analysis ends with a series of conclusions about the performance of employment in Spain.

The current decade is characterized by the ocurrence of significant changes in the information-librarian sectors. The main trends that harmonize the change of work approches of the organizations, in general, and of the information institutions, in particular, are identified. With this aim, a number of documentary sources belonging to the industry and trade sectors and also to the health and information sector were consulted. The main trends that were found are as follows: the development of a powerful technological infraestructure; the adoption of a marketing approach in the activity; the supply of informations products and services of a high added value; the assessment of information products and services; the functional design of the organization; the reorganization of human resources; the introduction of a management concept; the creation of quality systems; the forming of funds and the organization of resources oriented to the user as well as the development of permanent education and researches. The trends found constitute a model to the development of the educational activity in the sector.

The performance of the information professional in the industry requires abilities and competences
that are necessary for a better use of the circulating in formational content. The objectives of this
work were: to evaluate if the professional librarians possess the abilities and the necessary
competences to act at the market of specialized information for the industries; to identify and to
characterize the information professionals in the industries; to characterize what types of
information are more used in the different sections of industries; to identify the necessary abilities
demanded from the information professional and from librarians in the services rendered to the
industries. The subjects of this study were 16 big industries of the city of Maringá, State of Paraná.
A questionnaire was used for collecting the necessary data. Results showed that the main academic
background of the information professionals is the social sciences. Almost half of the professionals
do not have post graduated studies. No librarians were found in the sample studied. It was evident
the variety of posts and the length of experience of these professionals. It was verified that the use
of types and sources of industrial information sought are mainly to answer questions on other
competitive enterprises. The industries try to use information that answer to immediate situations
subsidizing the competitiveness, leaving information for future use on a second plan. It was
concluded that the abilities and the competences of librarians and information professionals were
costly considered Very important. Professionals with these abilities and competences are necessary
in the market of industrial information.

The educational change is not possible if we do not have access to this particular tool we a library. In this scenario, the first aim would be to create real libraries, considered as resource centres for learning. Librarians are among the most well-positioned teachers to make change effective. The knowledge and skills required from school librarians to enable educational changes design a professional role for school librarians as mediators between information and users, who belong to the whole learning community. School librarians who are adapted to this profile will give a more important value to the role of the library in the educational process, and they will contribute efficiently to change educational models.

A Phase-Model of the Cross-Cultural Learning Process of LIS International Doctoral Students: Characteristics and Interventions

This paper develops a phase-model of the cross-cultural learning process of LIS international doctoral students and
provides a consolidated, in-depth, and comprehensive look at their experiences that extends prior anecdotal and
survey-based efforts. Semi-structured interviews along with informal discussions, analysis of electronic interactions,
and observations as a participant researcher identify cross-cultural learning experiences of all the twenty-two
international doctoral students from a representative LIS program in the United States. The phases in the model of the
cross-cultural learning process represent significant cognitive (thoughts), affective (feelings), and physical (actions) aspects of the experiences of LIS international doctoral students. Mapping participants’ concerns and challenges during each phase is used to highlight interventions at the level of discipline, program, faculty, doctoral student community, and individual student that together provide a practical application to the research. Proposed interventions need to be holistically applied in conjunction with each other to promote mutual “two-way” learning where international students learn from the discipline and the discipline learns from the international students. Such an approach suggests symbiotic connections between improvements in effectiveness of student learning and efforts to tap into the cultural knowledge of international students to further growth in internationalization of LIS education in the United States.

An examination is attempted concerning the objective factors enforcing liaison between library services and educational process, as well as subjective prerequisites ensuring successful incorporation. Factors under consideration are related to issues on learning and teaching, the educational model followed at tertiary education, and the methodology that learning processing is taking place. Four characteristic educational models are examined: a) Lecture centred teaching based on a unique textbook, b) teaching based on multiple bibliography, c) System of mandatory and free courses selection, d) Student centred learning. The role of library services is described for every model. Finally, the necessary stages to be preceded the incorporation are traced and implementation fields are proposed concerning cooperation between faculty and librarians as well as between Academic Libraries.

This paper intends to show the present state of education concerning the teaching of collection development within the new technological environment in which we are immersed. It presents the results of a study of the Web pages of Schools and Departments of Library and Information Science throughout the world examining both their specific syllabi and the courses dealing with collection development they offer. The results indicate that, at present, it is only the English-speaking countries that offer courses specialised in collection development and have completely integrated this subject in their study programmes. In most of cases the teaching takes place within the master level and students must fulfil certain prerequisites in order to be accepted. On the other hand, many departments and graduate schools, mainly from Europe but also Latin America, Asia and Africa, have very few courses dealing with collection development although they are aware of the need to fill this vacuum. Another new field that is also dealt with in this paper is the teaching of the virtual library. Data is provided on the teaching of such courses by the universities visited since collection development is always included in them.

This document presents the necessary components for the elaboration of a curricular design: bases, foundations, the existing profile of formation and curriculum, as well as relations between them. It determines the bases of the curriculum for the EBA-UCV, constructed from a diagnosis of the social situation that it requires of an educative intervention to form the required professionals in information; the foundations of the curriculum, like the set of factors that allow the conception and organization of the education; and the profile of the professional in information by competitions, from the outline of the purpose and the goal of the profession. Additionally, it is exposed the vision and mission are presented, necessary elements in the strategic plan of an institution of higher education that confronts changes in its curricular structure. In order to finalize, it exposes conclusions, it proposes recommendations and steps to follow in the construction of the curricular change by the community of the School.

This paper analize the contribution of INFOBILA database to the Costa Rican teaching and research since 1996 with the support of the Vicerrectoría de Investigación, UCR. This database is an example of cooperative work among Latino American countries. Here, we find three studies made from this database. They demonstrate that students use the information belonging to INFOBILA and explore the future of the work developed as part of a new project: the Observatorio de la Bibliotecología Costarricense at the Escuela de Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información, UCR. This allows to increase the possibilities to new studies and uses in order to develop the Library and Information Science studies.

In order to determine the present tendencies toward the incorporation of the teaching of information science to the curriculum of the medical students and other related specialties, it was made a review of the literature available in the biomedical databases -bibliographical or complete text style- and of multiple web sites with information related to the theme, starting from different search engines -general and thematic. The current world tendency is the information literacy to all the society, at all levels of eduation, especially at the university. An increasing importance is given to the introduction of courses or subjects on information sciences to the curriculum of the medical students and of other health professions at the world level. The curriculum design, in effect in Cuba for the career of medicine and other related disciplines, lacks a program, subject or course that contributes to the knowledge and creation of the necessary skills among the students of these disciplines to use the resources and the information associated with their specialties.

Stresses on the importance of content of academic programmes and the need to continuously update it. In India there are about three hundred university-level institutions. The different subject specializations and combinations available altogether in these institutions is estimated to be above eighty thousand. This necessitates the development of an information system on academic programmes offered in India. The study recommends establishment of National Curriculum Information Centre and databases on academic programmes, teachers, institutions and other aspects. Databases are to be developed at institutional, and regional level as per set standards and data is to be pooled at national level for the common access. This can enable universities and institutes to evaluate their curriculum and programmes in comparison with that of others and effect improvement. Quality and relevance of the content of higher education programmes can be achieved with the support of such databases and networks.

This paper considers the identity crisis affecting many information professionals, due to the arrival of new technologies, tensions between people with and without a degree, economic restrictions and low social esteem. It is not enough to identify the problems, but also to propose solutions: with the arrival of new technologies the role of the professional has not changed; new graduates must recognise the role played by non-graduates in the development of libraries and other information centres at the same time they themselves are enriching the profession; information professionals must adapt to these new times of neo-liberalism without forgetting that the benefits of public libraries must be measured in social terms; and they must strive to explain what they do so that society and its leaders will value their work.

The present Master’s Thesis deals with information literacy in academic libraries. Following
the description of theoretic principles, development and current state of discussion in the US
are compared to the situation in Germany, drawing on important surveys, strategic papers
and models. The main distinctions between both countries are the different historic initial
conditions and the varying general frameworks. The current practice of information literacy in
university libraries and libraries of universities of applied sciences in the state of Northrhine-
Westphalia is explored within the empiric part by website analysis. It shows that manifold
activities to enhance information literacy can be identified, whereas the usability of the websites
can be improved. The final part oft the survey outlines possibilities for further improvement
of general information literacy in Germany.

The creation and development of an Open and Permanent Seminar in Library Science in the Interamerican School of Library Science in Medellín constitutes the first experience and the initial phase in the consolidation of a “program of theoretical research in library science” designed to energize and orient production of theoretical research in the area. The purpose of this proposal for an open and permanent seminar was to strengthen the culture of research that would permit an autonomous and free exposition of ideas or works of reflection; the creation of some research proposals on the part of students, graduates, and professors in the School of Library Science; the motivation to work in interdisciplinary teams; and the contribution of pedagogical training in research. By this means, extracurricular activities such as these open and permanent seminars constitute a
valuable tool for training in research as well as theoretical and epistemological eflection in the field of library knowledge.

Today, the importance of informational competences, which include technological abilities for the biomedical professionals is acknowledged, due fundamentally to their function as mediators in the learning process along life and the practice of the medicine based on evidence, foci that intend, in last instance, to contribute to a medical attention of excellence. In the published literature, experiences in the identification, normalization, evaluation and development of the informational competences are reflected, although a marked emphasis in its technological component is perceived. From the analysis of the registered literature, fundamentally in the PubMED database, the evolution of the processing of these competences, as well as concrete experiences in different countries, in the dimensions of identification, normalization, evaluation and formation could be verified.

On the occasion of the 140 th anniversary of his birth, a space is dedicated to honor the memory of the famous Cuban bibliographer Carlos Manuel Trelles and Govín, with the disclosure of some important data about his work in the field of bibliography. A synthesis of his life and work is made, including succinct information of his activity as a historian and a patriot. At the same time, the value of his contribution as a bibliographer of the medical literature in particular is stressed. His first results obtained in gathering and systematizing the scientific production of the Cuban doctors from the colonial period to late in the republican stage, independently of the privileged place he occupies in the history of Library Science and of Information Sciences as the most outstanding Cuban bibliographer of all times, are highlighted. Some of the titles dedicated to medical bibliography that corroborate the scope of his work in the specific sector of the health sciences are presented and commented.

Repositioning the information profession: why and how?

The talk delivered in the seminar on ‘Repositioning the information profession for the market place’ highlights the consequences of application ICT in libraries which in turn has caused the need for repositioning the profession. It appears that the roles and functions of both librarians and end-users are in transition. Identifying the trends as well as threats, the talk proposes some new roles/ functions of library professionals together with desired skills for fulfilling thes roles/functions. Also discusses the contents of programs for developing such skills among librarians to reposition the profession together with some do's and don’ts.

One of the fundamental pillars of the information retrieval is the name of the authors. And this is a reason why the standardization of authors names is an important aspect for the Web, and for the OAI archives. The problem is specially crucial for the academic individuals, who base their personal recognition on his bibliography. In Spain and the Latin American countries, unlike Anglo-Saxon, Portuguese, Nordic and Slavic countries, people sign writing first the family name of the father and then the family name of the mother. Moreover, many use a compound given first name. The authors who sign with their official names, very often find the unpleasant surprise that their works published in journals appear indexed in the databases, OAI repositories, citations, etc., in different forms.
Thanks to the collaboration between the open archive E-LIS and EXIT, a directory of professionals linked to E-LIS, we observed the need to standardize the Spanish authors of a single and unique way. This is what IraLIS tries:
1. Creating a registry of names of authors in Library and Information Sciences, that helps to locate the different variants. IraLIS records will contain these variants used by an author, as well as those interpreted by producers, aggregators, search engines, etc., of the diverse sources of information.
2. Creating awareness among Hispanic authors about the need of always sign his works in the same form, thinking about how the international databases, OAI archives and search engines (i. e., Google Scholar) will reference their works. In the Western world languages, the signature with a single family name is already a de facto standard –practically irreversible, specially because of the English influence on the science communication patterns and on the information world (Science Citation Index, Scopus, Chemical Abstracts, Medline, Inspec, etc.)— and Hispanic authors must adapt to that.
3. Creating the simple IraLIS signature format, that will allow authors names to be interpreted without confusions by any source of information.

The authors present a summary of the results obtained from a survey made to members of the professional association SEDIC in 2006. Data are analyzed with the aim of identifying origin and needs on continuous formation, labour and professional situation, different profiles in the profession and degree of job satisfaction of SEDIC members. The results are compared with the survey made in the same association in 2001, with the aim of drawing conclusions to improve our knowledge on the labour and professional situation in the sector of the Information Science in Spain.

Librarians’ leadership skills can be trained at Library and Information Science (LIS) schools, but before that it is essential to critically review the traditional trends in the curricula. One of the most important obstacles in developing library leaders is related to the bias encompassed by the educational tradition established in the United States of America by Melvil Dewey’s school, more than one hundred of years ago, and broadly spread worldwide. This paper analyzes the historical thread of the major learning goals of Dewey’s pioneer curricula, and its influence on Latin America education for librarianship. The concepts of “character”, “expertise”, “institution”, and “authority” are analyzed. Additionally, two approaches to modify the curricula are offered. The first constitutes a theoretical proposal drew by authors Totten and Keys (1994) based on training students to deal with risk-taking and innovation. The second is an actual modification made to the curriculum at the Department of Information Studies at Sheffield University, in England, explained by author Levy (1992). Finally, the conclusion critically summarizes both proposals and encourages more researches in the future.

In Spain, the big state industrial & research companies were the first to feel the need to have full time people devoted to organize their documents and to search for information. In those times librarians clearly had another different mission. Was later when boths professions approached their functions and tasks, until almost being the same. Outside those state companies information scientists did not exist. We were not classified as a "profession" in the official lists. We were considered like specialized clerks, who shared their working hours with other office tasks.

Since the analysis and appraisal of the graduate courses, in relation to the labor market, are required constantly, the purpose of this project is to examine the structure and qualifications of the students graduated at the “Faculdade de Biblioteconomia da PUC-Campinas” from 1995 to 2005, through their professional performance. This analysis should identify: personal profile, institutions where they work, activities developed, suggestions concerning their qualifications, adaptation to the labor market, behavior in relation to extended education,
differences concerning courses of previous curriculum, known as “Biblioteconomia” and actual curriculum known as “Ciência da Informacao com habilitação em Biblioteconomia”. The method used was based on field research, with the emission of 213 questionnaires, of which
36.62% were answered. In general most of the graduates are females, work in Campinas at University Libraries and at Private Company Libraries as Librarians, performing general and administrative functions. The course is selected to seek specific knowledge and attend job
opportunities. The course was appraised within regular and good, the teaching staff criticized, and lack of specific knowledge noticed. Apprentice classes have been suggested and a better set up of a trainee program. In relation to courses of extended education, 66.96% of the graduates of the previous curriculum concluded or are concluding courses, while 33.33% are of the actual curriculum. With the purpose of acquiring better knowledge to work, the necessity of a period of training, experience via work and the study of specialization courses are emphasized. The course offers certain skills like cataloguing, classifying and following of procedures. The course doesn’t offer skills like leadership, special subjects, practice, archive, English, sufficient cataloguing and classifying. Subjects considered important for the job: reference services, planning and administration of libraries, cataloguing, classifying, archive and automation. Subjects not considered important for the job: anthropology and bibliometry. In relation to regretting haring made the Course, 96,15% answered negatively. The main differences refer to bigger percentage of male students for the new curriculum and the criticism mainly refers to the subjects and to the teaching staff.

Is presented the continuously altered environment of information in the frame of which is practised the profession of librarian. Are examined the changes in the higher education and the tendencies and practices in the content of study of information's professionals. The changes in the model of modern libraries are studied and they are investigated as for the requirements that appear in the theoretical and practical education of professionals. In this frame, is expressed the modern reflection in the international bibliography, opinions of students that hardly graduated also library scientists in subjects that concern the education and are reported individual objectives for the configuration of flexible programs of study, which will support the requirements of multicultural society and will provide the professional dexterities that are required in the environment of society of information. Becomes, finally, concise presentation of energies of Department of Librarianship and Information Systems of Polytechnic School of Athens in order to corresponds in the continuously increasing requirement for rapid and effective adaptations.

Recognising how crucial the inclusion of innovative teaching practices in the field of Multimedia is, current experiences developed by the Library School at the Technological Metropolitan University are described. Through the adoption of Constructivist’s principles, which underlying teaching process centred at individual level, all the practices, strategies and methodologies here covered have been implemented using available resources from the WEB. The experience is also important because it is fostering on usable free open source technologies such as Google and Microsoft toolkits.

The introduction of digital technologies in journalism has not only brought about a new type of journalist, the so called ciberjournalist, but it has also contributed to modify journalists’ professional practices in traditional media (print, radio and television). More specifically, newsroom digitization, the implementation of non lineal editing systems and widespread internet usage have led to a transformation of productive processes, the rise of professional practices as well as the development of new skills. Many tasks associated with the job of the journalist have been modified from different viewpoints: new tasks are introduced, some of the existing ones are redefined and journalists also take on new roles traditionally carried out by other professionals. These trends have allowed journalists to increase autonomy in the process of documentation, so that their dependence on information professionals and news archives has decreased. This communication provides an overview of how journalists have adopted the roles of information search and retrieval, traditionally carried out by documentalists. It also analyzes the new challenges faced by journalists, their perception of the job of documentalists and changes in their relationship both with documentalists and the documentation centre. Finally, the results are discussed and some proposals about the design of the new documentation centres in the age of media convergence are made.

Radio broadcasting is a never-ending flow of contents. Information managers face up to the challenge of choosing which sounds will go to the sound recording library and how to process them. Day-to-day routine shows that there are short-term sounds. Electronic program grids and electronic scripts, created by journalists themselves and with a minimum of documentary standards, are good examples of a quick and effective sound retrieval. These electronic program grids and electronic scripts never replace the Information service, but complete it. Furthermore, related to a new relationship between information managers and journalists, Cadena SER has included a thesaurus in the new edition tool which journalists work with. This novelty allows journalists familiarize with the indexing language of their Information service and a minimum classification in their daily production.

El documentalista audiovisual: perfil y tareas del profesional en la era de la información digital

If in the last 20th century, information constituted the most valuable capital for an enterprise, in this 21st century, the audiovisual documentation is more valuable if possible. That is the reason why the figure of the audiovisual information manager acquires more outstanding, whose functions in television enterprises (television channels, production companies, etc) overcome the traditional role in a center with written documents. Among these news tasks, the digitalization shines by its own light, a process so complicated as necessary which requires of a great economic investment, in addition to a qualified personnel to do it. Furthermore, this process implies a group of considerations of legal and technological aspects which must be broached with a special haste in the case of archives such as the National Film Library oder state televisions. However, the digitalization is possible and an adequate execution allow us to shelter the hope of a promising future in the audiovisual media, which provides many advantages for the diary tasks of communication

Standardization is essential for proper transfer, storage and recovery of information. Standardization affects all aspects of information usage, and not only for professionals in information processing. The most prominent aspectsof professional practice in this field are adressed, including the IraLIS solution for citing Spanish authors with multiple surnames. There is a need for Spanish scientific authors to be aware that taking these actions will improve the visibility of their work in international citation resources.

This paper (Education and practice of librarianship: differences between classroom and professional work) presents the results of a series of interviews made to alumni of the undergraduate program in Library and Information Sciences at the School of Philosophy and Letters, at the Nuevo Leon Autonomous University (UANL) in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, who are economically active, to find out about their personal vision of the B.A. LIS program at UANL, and how the LIS B.A. program has influenced in their jobs. It also presents a qualitative analysis of the interviews. Also this paper shows the various curricula from the LIS B.A. program at UANL.

The evolving landscape of scholarly communications in British Columbia was explored from the viewpoint of academic librarians and faculty. Tom Whalley presented his perspective as a faculty member and Scholarly Activities Coordinator at Douglas College. The office of the Scholarly Activities Coordinator is housed within the Library. An increasing emphasis on academics at colleges such as Douglas is leading to some exciting exploration of scholarship and scholarly communications.

To the traditional tasks as cataloguing and storage, news tasks common to digital contents management have been added, such as metadata generation and management, or information flow control of servers and archives. This poster is based on the audiovisual documentalist figure on the local television, and it shows the environment where he has to develop his abilities and also the tasks and functions he has to do there.

Based on the concept and definition of Documentation as a science it is considered the role that carries out the information professional in interdisciplinary projects. These projects can be set in the field of the basic investigation and practical application to develop multimedia products which supposes the use of different materials (text, imagenes , sound etc). The methodology and the techniques of work used by researchers and information scientists differs because there are differences in the subject fields and sometimes communication problems can arise between these interdisciplinary groups. These problems can be solved by means of a systematized process of communication at a first moment this method can seem costly and unnecessary, it is advisable a foreplanning of the different processes to accomplish the project´s objetives. This paper is based on the work developed by CSIC´s Servicio de Documentación de Humanidades, which serves as support the research projects of some departments specialized scientific fields.

These excerpts of this presentation: a) highlight the importance to create LIS Masters and PhD programs with emphasis in the social transformation with a critical and pro-commons epistemology, and emphasis in the theoretical against the pragmatical and pro-commodification; b) reject the fallacious ideologies that say we live in a "knowledge and information society", and criticize them underpinned in the ideas of von Baeyer's (2003) Information: the New Language of Science; criticize their advocates that follow those ideologies from the dominant classes who evade and conceal the social inequalities, people without the basic social services: water, electricity, etc.; c) criticise the the advocates of the pragmatist and pro-commodification LIS education and propose to conduct deeper studies at a theoretical, epistemological, and methodological levels as a resistance and alternatives to the others, by using examples from other disciplines, such as physics, e.g. Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman (2001; The Pleasure of Finding Things Out) to study "for the pleasure of finding things out" or Stephen Hawking (1988; Brief History of Time), "to study only to know things" regardless "that intelligence wouldn't be a guarantee for our survival" (Hawking, 2001; The Universe in a Nutshell).

This paper analyses some reflections about the professional prestige and dignity of librarianship in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It analyses and criticises: a) the lack of professional categories for librarians with B.A.s or Masters degrees in Nuevo Leon, in contrast, for example with Mexico City's UNAM; it also assesses how several B.A. librarians from the Mexican National Institute of Social Security (the national health service system) in the Nuevo Leon state-wide fought to obtain a Professional B.A. Librarian status signed in the labour contract and eventually they won; b) it criticises the repressive and dictatorial attitudes on the side of the top managerial and academic mafias from the major Nuevo Leon universities who do not allow free and equal academic and professional development opportunities of the vast majorities of librarians with or without B.A. degrees and who also censor their freedom of expression and thought in Nuevo Leon librarianship; c) it advocates for librarians to have an honest service mystique as if they were doing a sort of "apostleship" against the common practice of Nuevo Leon librarians who have a practice without ethics and in favour of "monetarist" and "mercenarist" attitudes. As for the guild activities, it criticises the demogogical opportunism and charlatanism of the Nuevo Leon librarianship guilds such as AMBAC (standing from the Mexico's Mexican Library Association, Nuevo Leon chapter), they only take advantage of the ineptitudes of the three levels of the Mexican governments on library matters and they use dishonestly natural disasters and casualties against libraries or librarians and falsely appeal to sentimentalisms simply to move people's emotions and appear in press picture, but without honestly analysing, criticising and denouncing the deep structural faults underneath the Mexican State and all the three levels of governments: federal, state and municipal.

OBJECTIVE: To provide the medical students involved in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with a remotely accessible training tool for the self acquisition of information retrieval skills.
CONTENT: Access to the training tool is made trough a portal Web site. The tool is initiated with a clinical case. A selection of relevant electronic resources such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, textbooks, and bibliographical databases is proposed. Each resource comes with search examples achieved by librarians concerning the subject of the clinical case. Each step of the strategy is described, commented and illustrated with a screen copy of the original resource. To reinforce the realism, users are invited to click on the appropriate areas of the screen copy to progress in the search. A catalogue is created with the documents retrieved from the different resources. The catalogue is searchable independently and provides links to full-text when available.
The technical support for the training tool consists of a set of related databases (FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Inc., USA). Data concerning the clinical case, including medical imaging, is contained in a first database. Description of – and links to resources are collected in a second database as well as basic user instructions. For every search example in a specific resource, a database is created from a template, containing all the searched terms and screen copies necessary to provide an interactive demonstration. The catalogue of documents constitutes the last database.
The prototype must now be presented to teachers and students and evaluated for quality, performance and user-friendliness. Results will help us to improve the design and content of the training tool.

The more structured is a scientific system and the greater the degree of integration of its entities the more efficient is its management. Curricula vitae (CV) of researchers are documents that collect data on individuals, institutions and works, and seen as a whole, are a potential source of inside information about the scientific activity of a country. But if they are not stored properly it is not possible to use this knowledge to conduct studies on them. Moreover, the absence of a single standardized CV requires the researchers to fill in multiple versions along their professional practice. The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt), together with the entities belonging to the Spanish system of science, technology and enterprises (Secte), have initiated the project Standard Curriculum Vitae. This article describes its operation and underlines the benefits of its implementation.

The present work confronts the situation that that usually occurs in many libraries and units and information services (LUIS) of Mexico: The forced presence of people who toil in the same, without owning at least basic formation in information sciences, documentation and/or biblioteconomía. The diverse causes of this phenomenon and, first of all, the challenges appear that are opened before the professional of Library and Information Sciences (LIS). Their position can be diverse, but the labor requirements tend to be different from the 'traditional' means. The principal points are explained from where the above mentioned differences can be generated. The development of the specific professional competitions usually is put on approval in climates of interdisciplinary nature, multidisciplinary nature and even multiculturate. The diverse involved competitions are described, focusing them from diverse angles: a. The orientated ones more on having known (to do, to be and to learn), with the different attitudes and involved skills; b. The focused ones more from the disciplinary thing (disciplinary, interdisciplinary and to disciplinary); and c. Recounted more to the organization in strict sense (organizational, departmental and of the working place).
One concludes in which the diverse analyzed aspects take to the LIS professional to the change, to the opening necessarily, to the flexibility, without stopping affirming their specific identity, considering that this can be forming from the LIS Schools.

Study programmes in library sciences have changed fundamentally. In 1999, 29 states signed the Bologna agreement for a new study programme. Among other things the main focus is on the mutual recognition of qualifications obtained, in general to promote comparable course structures and to establish a single European Higher Education Area by 2010. The aim of this thesis is to examine the ongoing changes in the curriculum because of the reorganisation of study programmes. First, a review of literature is undertaken to give basic information on the Bologna process and the legal foundations. Statistical information about the situation in Austria and Germany conclude this chapter. In the second part of the thesis all bachelor and master study programmes in library sciences are examined. Additionally, specific characteristics of each course and some background information are given. Furthermore, the directors of studies are interviewed to find out whether or not there are deficits in the courses at the moment. Summing up, changes in the courses have both a positive but also a negative effect on the teaching programmes for information professionals. The findings of the interviews are summarised by giving information on the new curricula. Finally, recommendations are made about which courses are important and should be included.

A picture is presented of the state of library and information science university education in Spain. Statistical data is provided about both the number and type of university programs, describing existing institutions, degree levels and providing data on student enrolment and teachers.

“Premises for lifelong learning” - Creating a business plan for literacy events in junior high schools

Due to the escalating complexity of rapid technological change, today’s information
society is confronted with an abundance of information sources and therefore has to
face the defiance of tapping and understanding it.
Uncertain quality and expanding quantity of information pose large challenges for
information search. If there is no understanding which information is needed and how
it can be found, evaluated and used, the abundance of information will not in itself
create a more informed but rather a more confused society.
In this context information literacy services become more important. More and more
universities offer courses to communicate information literacy. Not only higher
educational students need guidance in how to use information the correct way. This
also holds true for the remaining society.
So while studying Information and Library Services, I created a three-phase
curriculum. Its courses build upon each other to communicate information literacy to
students of class eight, nine and ten (at the age of 13, 14 and 15) in cooperation with
public libraries.
The events attend to abilities that cannot be attended to in the everyday school life
because of time famine. Nevertheless, information literacy is really nowadays. This
concept provides an opportunity for schools to communicate these abilities without a
cost of time or teaching stuff.
To make this opportunity real the content of my bachelor thesis is to create a
business plan for the proposed information literacy events. Courses should be
offered independent from school and library institutions. The libraries only provide
rooms and media. By implementing an e-mail survey I asked several schools and
libraries if they are interested in this business idea. The outcome of this survey
showed that libraries have a greater interest and have the opportunity to develop a
budget for these events. So it is planed to offer the concept to libraries so that they
can enlist schools with this new outsourced service.
Therefore I will identify potential target groups, markets and competition; present my
occupational attitude and possible future prospects, as well as marketing strategies.

Information literacy in Portugal: A perspective from European Higher Education Area

This paper takes as general reference the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), whose creation endeavoured an educative approach of all European Union countries. A new educational model needs new skills. The informational skills constitute one of the most important requirements needed by university students in the information society context and they were effectively prioritized in the conception of the new educational models, consequently they should have an impact in the teaching-learning process.
So, it is important to know and understand how these university students are prepared in terms of competences and skills, regarding the access, (re)production, use, and diffusion of the information gathered and applied in different contexts. It is also necessary to establish a connection between apprenticeship and the acquisition of informational skills prior to the university, during the university frequency period and at the end of the university degree.
This configures a comprehensive approach that will consider the educational context, the student’s informational behaviour and his personal and social contexts and demands.
In fact, those concerns and positioning are in the core of the ongoing research project that supports the present paper. It focuses on the issue of informational literacy in the actual Portuguese and European learning models and the determination of the competences contextually acquired and the intrinsic abilities to search and use (reference, assimilate and transform) any type of information. The informational behavior study in focus has two important aspects to consider: the education reforms introduced in the Portuguese pre-university schools; and the transformations introduced by the Bologna Process in the EHEA.
This project also intents to contribute to the definition of a strategy that will support the effort of Portuguese universities on getting a good performance in the promotion of information competences. The theoretical-practical model that must be reached shows the importance of the information literacy theory which is clearly emphasized in this paper.

Along with the development of Information and Communication Technologies (TICs), new literacy and alternative teaching and learning approaches have emerged, as an answer to the new pedagogic conceptions opening the doors of the XXI century and to the lifelong learning. Among those literacy ways, the most comprehensive seems to be the information one, since it is people’s capacity to access, evaluate and use information effectively and ethically. Improving students´ skills in college is a challenge of the higher education institutions, which have the goal of graduating qualified and competitive individuals to enter the labor market. The objective of this experimental work was to draw an Information literacy strategy for the students attending Study Plan "D" of Agricultural Engineering. This strategy indicates students´ progress through years in three levels: 1- basic skills, 2- intermediate skills and 3- advanced skills, in which educational tasks, responsibility in task implementation, evaluation through integrating discipline objectives of the career and learning outcomes are stated in correspondence with SCONUL Model aptitudes

OBJECTIVES: map the competences that compose the traditional librarian of the health
area and the man competences for the clinical librarian, so that converge, for a profile of
the clinical librarian in Brazil. METHOD: considering there is no practice of Clinical
Librarianship in our country, this research was developed by a thorough revision of the
literature in national and international data bases and a document research for compeling
the main characteristics and abilities, present in the information professional librarian who
works with health information in Brazil; such as identify the main characteristics and
abilities of the clinical librarians in countries where is practice is established. RESULTS:
the competences required for Brazilian librarians, who work in the health area, are not
specific according to the terminologies and other features of the area they work in; what
reflects in their job performance. In spite of that, the competences required for clinical
librarian characterize a pro-active professional who is able to provide information that can
encourage decisions in the clinical environment. CONCLUSION: Brazilian librarians could
adapt the characteristics present in clinical librarian in their job routines, however, the
ideal thing should be the implantation of a Clinical Librarianship program in Brazil.

As Internet develops itself continuously, new technologies arise. These new technologies not only create new sources of information (such as websites), but also influence the way people communicate with each other (blogs, wikis, social networks, for instance). This new environment gives rise to new opportunities for Information Professionals and substantially changes the librarian’s work. New Professionals are perfect candidates to fulfill the new career profiles as they are “digital natives” and - for the first time - their technological skills make them able to compete with senior professionals developing their careers.
In this paper we analyze the changes new technologies have brought to information communication and we review new career profiles that are appearing as a consequence of all these changes. We discuss some of the changes that Web 2.0 has brought to public libraries and how new professionals can take advantage of them showing the success stories of some Spanish New Professionals. Also we examine the transformation of scholarly communication with the appearance of Web 2.0 tools and illustrate the new career profiles that are appearing as a consequence with success stories.

The success of the new communication channels through the Internet shows its suitable format and design, but also that there was a latent need for such kind of communication. This paper describes several characteristics of social capital (trust, amount and intensity of links, reciprocity, common themes and shibboleths, cultural level, language, diversity), ie the elements that influence that cooperation occurs between people. Build on the basis of social capital we present 3 platforms:
1) a state of the art 2.0 directory, the directory EXIT (Experts in Information Handling) for information professionals and journalists. EXIT defines a community by enumeration of its components, and allows us to compare who is in it and who is not, and with what data; emulate and cooperate; etc.
2) the repository of documents in open access and OAI-PMH protocol E-LIS (Eprints in Library and Information Science) located in Italy, but promoted by the Ministry of Culture of Spain; and
3) the system IraLIS (International Registry of Authors - Links to Identify Scientists) created to raise awareness among researchers about something so simple but so important as the signature, registering all variations of signature, and carrying out automated searches on Google Scholar, repositories and databases with all the name variants. The three platforms are interconnected to form a system that reinforces itself synergistically.

It is treated of research on curricular apprenticeship based in the trainees' and their supervisors
perception, in the quality of organizational politics concerning the apprenticeship programs,
and also, in the integration with the disciplines seen by teachers of Librarianship Course of
Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). With that, the profile of the
ideal apprenticeship, constituted by the involved groups, should be the indicator of the best
institution to work as a trainee in Librarianship. The curricular apprenticeship is part of the
professional formation and aided by legislation and academic instruments that support the
students' participation. However, few studies analyze qualitatively the process and the
relationships generated. The data were collect through forms of qualitative character. It aims
to promote the communicative integration between students and teachers of the Course of Librarianship of UNIRIO as well as of the professionals that act in the concessive institutions of work as trainee. Finally, the research should motivate in the companies the adoption of apprenticeship practices that you/they accomplish the legislation and value the formation,looking for the complementation of the trainees' learning, and guide them to the market.

Recommendations to publish qualitative articles in professional and scientific journals in order to have impact on the scientific community (to be known, to be cited). To publish is always a good task, since it denotes a healthy ambition of the author, but one must do it properly, following the usual standards. In writing you have to think on the readers and set yourself at their level of knowledge, and also to adapt the text to the style of the chosen journal. The formal aspects are important and we have to spend quite a lot of time preparing them (they are not easy), which often is forgotten or obviated because of laziness or tiredness. Finally, we must do much careful marketing and take advantage of the effort of having written the article, not leaving the work half done.

The European higher education is immersed in an ineludible process of evolution in the than her the teaching competition of the professionals of teaching acquires a new relevance. Codes of Good Teaching Practices they constitute a good exponent of the permeability of the universities
to the concept of corporate social responsibility, in as much as they project that than each the university proposes like competitive value and I eat referent formative of your professionals. The objective of this work is showing the process of planning and design of Good Code teaching practices developed at the University of Saragossa by the professors of the area of Library and Information science in the awarding of title willingly in Information, intervening knowledge and measure of your opinion on a set of factors directly related with the quality of your teaching activity. The theoretic referential frame is the competitive concept teacher established by Zabalza Beraza for the university teaching staff, as well as your analysis of them capacities, knowledge and skillful actions that characterize it. The material is described with attention to detail and method used, as well as the analysis of the data obtained, that they allow being enough, I eat main result, a Code of Good Teaching Practices, in the one that are picked up a set of recommendations guided when incrementing development of noncontentious stocks whose purpose is her quality of the teaching activity of the professors that they subscribe it. Between the findings stand out her appropriateness of the designed instrument to guide the learning-teaching processes.

Nowadays, audio-visual market in Spain is undergoing a significant process of transformation that will be enhanced by the imminent complete analogue-to-digital switchover and its consequences. The evolution of the audio-visual market is leading to the outsourcing of audio-visual productions of the existing TV channels, therefore, audio-visual production companies are becoming their suppliers of contents, although they usually have reduced teams at their disposal, and not a wide structure such as the one existing at TV channels. Since the documentalist cannot count either on a stock footage archive or on licence agreements with audio-visual news agencies and other stock footage archives, his functions in these audio-visual productions demand the development and the hybridisation of tasks and skills. This is how the documentalist is becoming an image manager, as he not only analyses and obtains images from the existing stock footage industry, but he also deals with the rights identification and management copyright research and ongoing rights management models of copyright-related rights from different image providers all over the world. The reflection is focused as well on the concept of royalties and on the implications that nowadays development of new technologies in information and society have on it. The complexity of the rights indentification and management copyright research and ongoing rights is leading to new legal challenges, which impact on media professional’s tasks and their overall role in audio-visual media organizations is also brought to examination.

During the last years public and private institutions and companies have rediscovered their interest in the tipical scientific and technical documentation techniques, especially in the fields of business information and innovation management, under a great many of denominations leaded by the “Technology Watch” concept. The heyday of the Technology Watch Systems (TWS) and Business Intelligence means an opportunity for the information professionals that have to cope with two challenges: to include and assess the techniques and knowledge of the information and documentation sciences in the interdisciplinary fields; and to prove, before the society, the value of the documentary work quality, threatened by the inrush of neologisms and denominations that disguise the traditional techniques of the profession. It is recommended that the information professionals penetrate in the field of Technology Watch and Business Intelligence, protected with norms such as the spanish UNE 166006:2006 EX, by means of consolidating these concepts in a field that, far from being alien to the documentalist, is fully fed by the theoretic heritage of the profession.
