We analyze the adaptation process to the European Space for High Education of a subject of the Information Science degree. We describes the development carried out using the Moodle platform, focusing in the created and generate aspects for this adaptation. The experience in the use of e-learning to teach an official university course was shown in the text. The degree of utilization of e-learning tools was pointed out, and also the effort of students and teachers to achieve the skills of them was analyzed. It allows us to evaluate if the formative activity of the students using such systems needs big efforts of adjustment. It is an element of important valuation that can be applied in the learning of the Translation and Interpretation studies adapted to the EEES system.

The central aim of the project is the accomplishment, distribution and test of a metadistribution adapted to the teaching in the some matters of the Degree in Information Science. This metadistribution would consist of an autonomous complete system, automatically bootable and adaptable from a great variety of hardware. In addition, it would contain some tools for productivity and general use (desktop programs), as well as of specific programs used in the teaching of the different matters, and also documentation and complementary information for such matters: bibliography in digital format, information for practices and examples, etc.

Report on second DLM-Forum on electronic records. The DLM-Forum on Electronic Record is a multidisciplinary international forum, organized by the European Commission, that it has by objective to impel the projects for the improvement of the management of electronic documents in the organizations and by the conservation to length I finish of them. At the same time, the DLM-Forum is a basic datum point in the coordination of the policies of management of the electronic documents that are carried out in the states members of the European Union, for the establishment of standars of management and communitarian scale conservation, and by the implication of the private agents in the investigation of solutions to the problematic of electronic documents. This report exposes the origin of this initiative, describes two editions celebrated until and the perspective of future of the forum.

Report on third DLM-Forum on electronic records (Barcelona, 6–8 May 2002). The third edition of the DLM-Forum on Electronic Record was celebrated in Barcelona, the multidisciplinary international forum that has the objective to improve the management of electronic documents in the organizations and the long-term conservation. This edition has been marked by an active participation of industry of the technologies of the information and the communications, and by the presentation of the results of DLM-Forum 1996. The present report describes the development of the DLM-Forum in Barcelona.

The Open Archives Forum provided a Europe-based focus for dissemination of information about European activity related to open archives and, in particular, to the Open Archives Initiative. The aim of the Forum was to facilitate clustering of IST projects, national initiatives and other parties interested in the open archives approach. In order to do so, the Forum brought interested parties together to build a community of interest, enable exchange of information and establish a web-based European information source for open archives. In addition, the Forum undertook comparative reviews of technical and organisational issues.

Background: The specialized literature increasingly reflects the social demand existing at the world level of professionals with a higher development of their abilities as regards creativity, communication, motivation, group work, leadership and management, among others. For this reason, the number of sociopsychological trainings conducted as a modality of professional self-improvement has been increased since the 1980s.
Objectives: To make a general synthesis of the concept of "sociopsychological training" as well as to show the results of its application in several enterprises of the Ministry of the Iron and Steel Industry (SIME, in Spanish).
Results: It was confirmed that the sociopsychological training on creativity develops the creative attitude of its participants, increase the resistance to the closedown and the originality of those taking part in the training course.
Conclusions: The development attained in the sphere of creativity by this training is applied to the solution of real problems at entreprises.

Various information servers in the country and in INTERNET were studied to find out the electronic lists in Spanish existing in the field of information and library sciences. Details of each identified list and suscription addresses are given. The function of this means of communication for search, identification and transfer of information and knowledge among units and persons of different geografical areas and levels of development are also set forth. The importance of Cuban list ACIMED-L is stressed as means of exchange between the units of the National Information System of Medical Sciences and Spanish list MedRed, wich allow to share information resources in health sciences existing in INTERNET.

Different information servers were reviewed in order to release electronic listservs specialized in Bibliotecology and Information Sciences. Searches were carried out at the servers from the National Center for the Automated Exchange of Information (CENIAI), the Electronic Network of Information for Health (Infomed), the University Network from the Ministry of Higher Education (REDUNIV) and the network of Computer Young Clubs (TINORED). Once inside Internet, we navigated through the Web page of the Spanish Academic and Research Network -http://www.rediris.es-, from which information about the listservs in Spanish was obtained. The main comands used to interact with servers are indicated. The accomplished results show the existence of electronic listservs in Cuba as well as in other Spanish-speaking countries and which constitute invaluable sources for the exchange and transfer of information no matter the geographic spot where users are. The existence of the Spanish Documentation and Information List in Medicine -BIB-MED- of particular relevance to the National System of Information on Medical Sciences is pointed out.

Building a shared vision : CBUC training & translation programs

The CBUC was set up in late 1996 as a public body with its own legal status. It is composed of a Governing Council, an Executive Committee, a Technical Committee, a Technical Office and Working Groups. The Governing Council is composed of two representatives of each member institution, the Executive Committee regulates the functioning of the CBUC, and the Technical Committee - composed of the directors of the Libraries - examines the proposals for action and monitors their progress. The CBUC has a Technical Office composed of seven persons who coordinate and implement the annual working plan. The basis of the programs of the CBUC are the Working Groups. These are composed of experts from the libraries who meet regularly or on an ad hoc basis according to the needs.
The CBUC carries out other activities such as joint purchases, training programmes, traductions, creation of a protocol for evaluating library services, etc.

In recent years technology has made tremendous impact on every profession including Librarianship. This spurt of technology has brought dramatic changes in every sphere of library activity. The library professionals, as intermediaries, have to be cope with the "knowledge explosion" which is a result of the information technology and high expectations of the users. New skills and knowledge will have to be acquired and the existing skills will have to be enhanced to survive and face the challenges in this dynamic information society. This paper focuses on some of the skills, personal traits and attitudes and knowledge that are necessary for the Library professionals of this millennium.

In the information age, an increasing number of people are engaging in life-long learning. As an important part of this process, “continuous education” is now being discussed widely and has become the subject of extensive research both in Turkey and abroad. In this paper, we will begin by providing a brief historical review of the role continous education has played in educating librarians. Then we will report on current activities in continous education in terms of the opportunities for self-improvement, and support available at institutional level for librarians. Our areas of interest are first the U.S. and Europe, which we will examine only briefly; second, Turkey, and third the Koc University Suna Kıraç Library, Istanbul.

Library Movement is a social movement. It seeks to, raise the general level of the life of the people as a whole by raising their standard of, living through societal institutions(s)/organisation(s). Library movement seeks to work through the mind. It emphasises that a prior cultivation of mind is necessary for physical, intellectual and social betterment. Library movement differs from the activities of formal education at school, college or university, which are well known means of feeding the mind. Library movement does not require the pleasure of a teacher. It leads to the growth of mind through “self-education”. “Strong determination” and “Tremendous Cultivation” of mind for achieving major objectives of the society is essential to help the society move ahead in good stead. As new technological development is applied, it has its impact on libraries and information units, whether it is of direct application: such as the, development of more rapid communications by high speed telecommunication networks or less direct efforts, the library system acts on the way in which the users react. Libraries, being major elements in the chain of information flow are usually more affected than effecting in relation of these changes. Apart from changed education environment, the library infrastructure has also undergone a change. The convergence of telecommunication and computer technologies in the contest of libraries has been the product of continual development rather than a sudden movement. The networking of libraries has now given rise to information networks, information databases and information infrastructure. The information environment has changed the infrastructure, the scope, the services and the goal of a library. The whole world is working today towards a Global Information Infrastructure. The Editorial discusses the present and future of Librarianship.

Both technical and vocational schools specialised on bookbinding and document restoration have been and are at present one of the most important means for young people to find jobs in these crafts. These schools are also useful in the recovery and preservation of our bibliographic and documentary heritage. At the end of their training, the student workers reach the level of library aide and some working experience through a contract signed with a promoting agency.

Our library profession is changing dramatically, largely due to the forces unleashed by major advances in computing, networking, and storage technology. We are at a juncture where the library and librarian must ask how they will embrace and use these new technologies. From a business perspective, we know that the three interrelated concepts of competition, technological discontinuities, and innovation are having more and more relevance for the library. This paper suggests that libraries are losing market share and that we can address external threats from competition through unique partnerships and technological innovation.

This paper (fully translated into English, see, title section and English PDF version) shows evidence that one of the most acute problems that faces the Mexican public libraries is that of their personal who the vast majority lacks of university training in library science or librarianship. It criticises that various researchers have identified such problem, but their conclusions have become stagnated into an outdated paradigm where they only identify the problems, but without looking their most feasible solutions. It argues for the construction of a new paradigm where alternative strategies were taken into consideration to look for the general welfare of librarians and information workers, such as: university training for the personnel; to create a national open distant education system of university training in library science with full scholarships from the government to all the Mexican librarians working in public libraries; to seek for the regulated raising of wages to personnel; to seek for the creation of a tabular system of categories of job descriptions and salaries; for the creation of a position promotion and salary ascending system through the professional career service; to look for grants from the government for librarians so they can improve their professional development by subscribing to library associations and to attend conferences; in general to look both in policy and practice for the real welfare of all Mexican librarians and information workers, among others.

This article is an introductory work to the qualitative research methodologies and methods aplied to the Library and Information Studies (LIS) field, as a way to expand the horizons of librarians so they might be able to explore different roads to improve the common telology of LIS which is basically to fuse the library (informational - cognitive) services with the needs and issues, wishes and dreams of society in its respective communities. It argues for the demystification of LIS research which is impregnated with an halo and cult almost mystical that far from motivating librarians both practical and teorethical to carry out research work in a daily basis, it plays an inhibitor role affecting not only the development of LIS research, but the LIS profession itself; this demystification implies that research could be for everyone who wants it to. It also argues that it is necessary to study in depth the epistemological debate in LIS to promote LIS research as a sub-discipline and the education and training of LIS researchers in order to transform such a plausible activity into an attractive one that becomes even a fun thing to do. [NB: History of the publication of this article. This was originally written on the 10th of May 2004. It was requested by Saul Armendariz Sanchez, the president of the Mexican Association of Librarians (AMBAC) of that time (2003-2005) to be published in the journal of such association, Liber. AMBAC's coordinator of publications of 2004, Carlos Curiel Rivera informed the author that this article should be published in Liber in the Vol. 6, No. 2, in June 2004. However such publishing never took place, 27 months later since its publishing must have taken place )(today is 26.07.2006) neither Saul Armendariz Sanchez, nor Carlos Curiel Rivera have delivered a copy of the article to the author in any format: paper, PDF, online URL in HTML or whatever with the collated pages of the Vol. 6, No. 2. A year later, in July 2005, the new president of AMBAC --for the period 2005-2007--, Felipe Becerril Torres informed the author that such Vol. 6 No. 2 issue of Liber was still waiting to be printed. But such president stepped down his charge as president of AMBAC due to illness on the 8th of May 2006, so this article was not published during his term. On the 18 of May 2006 Hortensia Lobato Reyes replaced Felipe Becerril Torres as new president of AMBAC and until today she has not informed the author if this article has been actually published. Recently it has been shown on the Website of AMBAC that the Vol. 6 with numbers 1 to 4 has been published (see: http://www.ambac.org.mx/publicaciones.htm), however this article of this author has not appeared anywhere on that site and when tracked on the databases which index Liber such bibliographic record does not exist either. Therefore, with the current evidences, it is a fact tha this article was never actually published by the 2003-2005 president of AMBAC Saul Armendariz Sanchez, as it was either published by the 2 subsequent AMBAC's presidents. And today 27 months later since suppossedly was published it is highly likely that never will be published by any Liber - AMBAC's officers. Thus, the Mexican Association of Librarians requested this article exprofesso for the celebration of AMBAC's 50th anniversary through its president in turn, Saul Armendariz Sanchez, it was approved by him and the Association's publications team and peers, they promised to be published on the Liber Vol. 6, No. 2, June 2004, but they never actually published it. Finally, this article has been fully published as it was originally written in 2004 by the Peruvian journal BiblioDocencia: Revista de Profesores de Bibliotecología (Library-Teaching: journal of faculty and lecturers of library and information science) in the Vol. 2, No. 12, quarter January-March 2006, pp. 4-12. And from now on it should be cited from this definitive 2006 bibliographic record. Note written by the author on the 26 July 2006, Sheffield, UK]

This newspaper editorial article ("Preserving the memory: of the public information archives") argues in favor of the law of The Right to Access of Public Information of the Government and Transparency of the Government in the state of Michoacan in Mexico so its citizens can preserve their information memory. It supports the idea that such a law and rights can be useless and dead if the government cannot guarantee real access to information by including on the payroll the professional information experts (archivists, librarians, and documentalists). To support these arguments the author underpins evidences of research made by Zapopan Martín Muela-Meza ("Access to public information law, librarians and archivists" 2001 and "Why have been left out the information workers who give access to information at the new Mexican Law of Access and Freedom to Information?" 2002).

Information Access and Perception of Training Participants on Library Services: An assessment was conducted to 40 participants of Diklatpim III (Agricultural Leadership Training) at Pusat Manajemen Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia Pertanian (Center for Agricultural Human Resource Development) in April 2003. Theobjective of the assessment was to analyze the use and participant access behaviour on library services, perception on the services,collection, and its layout. The assessment was designed by using survey method with questionnaire as interview guidance. The result showed that information access of participants in using library services was low according to needed collection, reading activity, and library loan. Perception of participants on library collection and services was positive, especially on diversity and currentness of collection, type of library services, capability and attitude of library officer/librarian, library room lighting, andcollection layout. Collection used by participants was highly useful to prepare presentation material, paper and report writing.

Connecting Theory and Practice in LIS: The Training Model of the Information Resource Centers

The traditional LIS education is also essential as it provides the foundation for our profession. Also, the LIS theory explores the history and evolution of the librarianship in different era. The library science educators do review the LIS courses from time to time, because it isn’t one time job. As the nature of information sources changes, the sophistication of information technology advances, and the quantity of knowledge explodes; the job market of librarians itself demands revision and expansion in the curricula of the LIS.
Even if the curriculum of an LIS school is up to the mark, the institution is required to train its new information professionals. Every type of library (i.e. public, academic, or special etc.) has to impart a proper training to its employees for better performance and productivity.
At the same time, it is true that not all the libraries or their parent institutions can afford the expensive and sophisticated training model of the IRCs. However, if they put the professional training on priority and spend some resources and time on it, they can get best out of their employees. One way is to arrange the in-house training sessions at their libraries. Moreover, the libraries of the same kind or in the same region can coordinate training on different LIS modules. The Internet is itself a good learning, teaching and training tool. The information professional can improve the professional skills through reading the professional literature, becoming a member of professional association, and consulting the value added professional websites.

Based on a literature review, a brief historical account on Internet development is presented along with its concepts and its impact on social knowledge. The author focuses on weblogs as a communication resource in the net that allows cyberspace interaction. She gives special attention to its definition, structure, typology and evaluation. She supplies weblog directories and concludes that due to their thematic cohesion they are presented as an alternative scientific communication tool.

The development of virtual libraries that offer the user access to the complete documents requires the team work of librarians, editors and webmaster. In this presentation, Dr. Dominique Babini, coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Virtual Library of Social Sciences of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), proposes the option of cooperative virtual libraries and describes how they organized a distance learning course via Internet for the training of librarians and editors of 18 countries of Latin American and the Caribbean, pointing out the factors that must be considered for the organization of courses via Internet.

Information literacy (IL) was adopted as the theme for the Presidential year of Professor Sheila Corrall, the first President of CILIP, in April 2002. At the end of her year as President, she called a meeting of experts and practitioners at CILIP, which concluded that the term was not understood or used consistently across all sectors in the UK. A working party was formed, charged with producing a definition, as well as supporting material such as case studies demonstrating how IL can make a difference to individuals. A definition and lists of core skills were developed.

This paper intends to show the present state of education concerning the teaching of collection development within the new technological environment in which we are immersed. It presents the results of a study of the Web pages of Schools and Departments of Library and Information Science throughout the world examining both their specific syllabi and the courses dealing with collection development they offer. The results indicate that, at present, it is only the English-speaking countries that offer courses specialised in collection development and have completely integrated this subject in their study programmes. In most of cases the teaching takes place within the master level and students must fulfil certain prerequisites in order to be accepted. On the other hand, many departments and graduate schools, mainly from Europe but also Latin America, Asia and Africa, have very few courses dealing with collection development although they are aware of the need to fill this vacuum. Another new field that is also dealt with in this paper is the teaching of the virtual library. Data is provided on the teaching of such courses by the universities visited since collection development is always included in them.

Presentation (which title is: "Social and Political Responsibilities of Librarians") given to the students and professors, lecturers, readers and faculty body of the College of Library and Information Science (LIS) of the School of Philosophy and Letters at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, thanks to the invitation of Mrs. Maria del Rosario Banda Martínez, lecturer and MLS of that program (to whom the author is very thankful for such invitation). The presentation covered around these 5 themes which appear to librarians as ethical problems on the political and social scenarios where such reality expects that they assume their consequent responsibilities: 1)Social problems, 2) Lack of a social and political compromise, 3) causes of the lack of social and political compromise, 4) social and political challenges, 5) recommendations to librarians. It is noteworthy the remark that librarians should adopt ethical principles based on the reality, the materiality, and physical nature where libraries and users exist. They should embrace a critical, analitical, eskeptical and secular thought above all of their possible religious, mythological, or fantastical dogmatisms or of any other kind they may have as personal beliefs.

Una introducción a las metodologías de investigación cualitativa aplicadas a la bibliotecología

This article is an introductory work to the qualitative research methodologies and methods aplied to the Library and Information Studies (LIS) field, as a way to expand the horizons of librarians so they might be able to explore different roads to improve the common telology of LIS which is basically to fuse the library (informational - cognitive) services with the needs and issues, wishes and dreams of society in its respective communities. It argues for the demystification of LIS research which is impregnated with an halo and cult almost mystical that far from motivating librarians both practical and teorethical to carry out research work in a daily basis, it plays an inhibitor role affecting not only the development of LIS research, but the LIS profession itself; this demystification implies that research could be for everyone who wants it to. It also argues that it is necessary to study in depth the epistemological debate in LIS to promote LIS research as a sub-discipline and the education and training of LIS researchers in order to transform such a plausible activity into an attractive one that becomes even a fun thing to do. [NB: History of the publication of this article. This was originally written on the 10th of May 2004. It was requested by Saul Armendariz Sanchez, the president of the Mexican Association of Librarians (AMBAC) of that time (2003-2005) to be published in the journal of such association, Liber. AMBAC's coordinator of publications of 2004, Carlos Curiel Rivera informed the author that this article should be published in Liber in the Vol. 6, No. 2, in June 2004. However such publishing never took place, 27 months later since its publishing must have taken place )(today is 26.07.2006) neither Saul Armendariz Sanchez, nor Carlos Curiel Rivera have delivered a copy of the article to the author in any format: paper, PDF, online URL in HTML or whatever with the collated pages of the Vol. 6, No. 2. A year later, in July 2005, the new president of AMBAC --for the period 2005-2007--, Felipe Becerril Torres informed the author that such Vol. 6 No. 2 issue of Liber was still waiting to be printed. But such president stepped down his charge as president of AMBAC due to illness on the 8th of May 2006, so this article was not published during his term. On the 18 of May 2006 Hortensia Lobato Reyes replaced Felipe Becerril Torres as new president of AMBAC and until today she has not informed the author if this article has been actually published. Recently it has been shown on the Website of AMBAC that the Vol. 6 with numbers 1 to 4 has been published (see: http://www.ambac.org.mx/publicaciones.htm), however this article of this author has not appeared anywhere on that site and when tracked on the databases which index Liber such bibliographic record does not exist either. Therefore, with the current evidences, it is a fact tha this article was never actually published by the 2003-2005 president of AMBAC Saul Armendariz Sanchez, as it was either published by the 2 subsequent AMBAC's presidents. And today 27 months later since suppossedly was published it is highly likely that never will be published by any Liber - AMBAC's officers. Thus, the Mexican Association of Librarians requested this article exprofesso for the celebration of AMBAC's 50th anniversary through its president in turn, Saul Armendariz Sanchez, it was approved by him and the Association's publications team and peers, they promised to be published on the Liber Vol. 6, No. 2, June 2004, but they never actually published it. Finally, this article has been fully published as it was originally written in 2004 by the Peruvian journal BiblioDocencia: Revista de Profesores de Bibliotecología (Library-Teaching: journal of faculty and lecturers of library and information science) in the Vol. 2, No. 12, quarter January-March 2006, pp. 4-12. This paper describes elements necessary for the training of authors and library and information science professionals in the current digital society. The paper proposes this training occur from an interdisciplinary perspective, namely the university, library, and organizational context. The paper provides a contextualization of the characteristics and causes that make this training so vital, followed by a theoretical and conceptual description regarding metadata for digital objects. The paper then focusses on the necessity of training and education from the point of view of processes currently underway in various countries and organizations, specifically at the Escuela Interamericana de Bibliotecología. The paper concludes by exploring particular cases where metadata is a key mechanism to the implementation of a digital library.

The integration of Spanish universities within the new European Higher Education system brings the opportunity for the improvement of the quality of academic programs and curricula that will respond to current market needs and society. Moreover, it is an opportunity for faculty members to determine the use of new methodologies and to define new goals. This report describes a research project developed at Universidad Complutense de Madrid during the year 2005: "Competencias en los títulos de grado y postgrado en información y documentación: definición y su introducción en la metodología docente", [Competencies in the Information Science undergraduate and graduate degree programs: its definition and its introduction in teaching methodology]. First, it defines the approach of competencies for the academic curriculum in Library and Information Science. Competence is conceived as a complex process that enables a person to solve problems and perform tasks with suitability in a particular professional context. Besides, this approach provides the possibility of changing the teaching methodology towards an "integral education", which is focused on the students learning process and based on knowledge and know-how skills. A List of Competencies for the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Information Science have been formulated. This work has been based on the "Euroreferencial en Información y Documentación" elaborated by the ECIA (European Council of Information Associations) thanks to an European Commision project and in which the chair of the Complutense project, Carlos Tejada, participated as Spanish commissioner. Thus, the 33 competencies of this document have been analyzed in the following aspects: whether the competency may be developed in an academic context, or whether it may need another complementary text to adapt it to an academic curriculum; the recommendation of its development for undergraduate degree or graduate degree programs; the relationship to other competencies; the relationship with the subjects of the contents proposed in the "Libro Blanco de la ANECA del Título de Grado en Información y Documentación"; the proposal of new competencies in regards to an academic context; and any other observation that could arise. One of the conclusions of this study is that there is conclusive evidence about how in a competence-oriented curriculum an interdisciplinary approach is present and is fundamental. And, whereas in the traditional model of teaching the responsibility falls to the instructor only, in this new model it is shared among a team of instructors. Therefore, in this new model the working relationship among instructors and assessments of the teams are essential.

Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) having a Library and Information System (KAULIS) extending services to its more than 48 campuses spread over the length and breadth of the State as part of its modernization programmes constituted an expert committee on staff. The terms of reference was to examine the work load and nature of work in libraries at different levels in the university; and suggest a staff pattern including qualifications and professional training required for its library and information service staff. The committee in its report submitted in 1999 opines that library and information service scenario is witnessing revolutionary changes in the mediums and methods for accessing, storing, organising, processing and disseminating information. Library management functions are currently in a transitional phase as the forces affecting the supply; organisation and delivery of information adjust to the new digital paradigm. To harness the possibilities offered by ICT the committee has redefined the librarian’s role, status and qualifications in a much wider context. Considering the requirement of the high tech system developed by KAU the committee evolved various recommendations and a staff formula which can satisfy the present and future needs for staffing the library and information service system of the university. The pattern suggested in the report can serve as a model also for other State Agricultural Universities engaged in modernizing their systems.

The European Space for Higher Education has opened a new teaching framework, centred on learning, the active role of students and the importance of acquiring competencies for developing the capacity for learning throughout one’s life. University libraries can become an essential component of this model of learning by training students in the acquisition of information competencies needed now in their coursework as well as in their future professions. A double challenge exists: collaborating in the training of future graduates and, at the same time, adopting methods for active learning. In recent years, librarian trainers of the Library and Documentation Service (SBD) have received training from the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) on new pedagogical methods: individual methods of resolving and group verification, co-evaluation, tools such as «webquest», problem-based learning, the student’s learning dossier, etc. In this presentation some of these methods will be discussed - namely those that have been put into practice in training activities offered for credits by UPC libraries. The results in terms of learning and student satisfaction have been excellent and make it apparent that these innovative teaching methods are quite valid for acquiring information competencies.

Emerging roles for the Librarian in Problem Based Learning

Problem-based learning(PBL) has gained recognition in the medical and health sciences in past years. Research has been carried out on the involvement of the library and librarians in PBL implementation. This article reports on the emerging roles for librarians in PBL implementation by rewieing the reasearch in this area during the past 10 years. The initial analysis revealed studies which focussed on the effects of PBL on library usage. However the trend has since evolved to studies on the involvement of librarians in building and implementing the PBL curricula. The aim of this article is to summarize the main findings of research focussed on library involvement in PBL at the faculty and to further provide directions for policy makers and PBL practitioner. Librarians may also find new chalenging roles for themselves within the academia. The studies included in the review were selected by conducting a literature search within identified online databases and selection was done based on empirical studies on PBL in higher learning. The outcomes reveal that librarians may be involved in the planning of PBL, act as facilitators during the implementation, as tutors, as resource professionals and other interesting roles. It is concluded that a framework be proposed for the role of the librarian in the effective implementation of PBL.

In 1996 the University of Calgary developed a classification system using functional analysis. Ten years later, this system has proven that functional analysis works and that these types of systems must continue to be responsive to changes in the organization. This case study gives an overview of functional analysis in general, and how the process applied to the creation of the University Classification System (UCLASS). It also will describe how the classification system was rolled out to the university and how functional analysis can be applied to any organization.

This paper considers the identity crisis affecting many information professionals, due to the arrival of new technologies, tensions between people with and without a degree, economic restrictions and low social esteem. It is not enough to identify the problems, but also to propose solutions: with the arrival of new technologies the role of the professional has not changed; new graduates must recognise the role played by non-graduates in the development of libraries and other information centres at the same time they themselves are enriching the profession; information professionals must adapt to these new times of neo-liberalism without forgetting that the benefits of public libraries must be measured in social terms; and they must strive to explain what they do so that society and its leaders will value their work.

Libraries all over the world have seen remarkable changes due to the influx of new technology. The arrival of Electronic books and journals has made it mandatory for the information professionals to purchase their resources through consortia and it has become a very important feature of the academic library scene. Information professionals working in libraries have to gain experiences with new modes of delivering contents and the new genre of digital collections. We need concerted efforts in consortia building, electronic licensing, staff reduction as well as investments in staffs education and development so that users of the system have the access to much more content for the same funding. Attempts have been made here to examine the additional skills required for librarians and other traditional information professionals in managing new information environment specially as information system administrator or e-resources/ consortia manager.

This report (Technical training and education in Library Science by the University of Nuevo Leon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico) describes the Technical Course in Library Science which took place between the Summers of 1968 and 1970 at the Universidad de Nuevo Leon, now Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, at San Nicolas de los Garza, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It also describes the foundation, in the first Summer, of the Nuevo Leon state Chapter of the Mexican Library Association. And in 1988, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of such association's chapter.

This is the original pre-print written on the 17 November 2003 which eventually got published in 2006 –see its history of publication inside the actual document--, and since the article got originally reduced by the editors of Liber of the Mexican Association of Librarians then this original pre-print includes many examples excluded there by Liber's editors. This is an introductory work to the qualitative research methodologies and methods aplied to the Library and Information Studies (LIS) field, as a way to expand the horizons of librarians so they might be able to explore different roads to improve the common telology of LIS which is basically to fuse the library (informational - cognitive) services with the needs and issues, wishes and dreams of society in its respective communities. It argues for the demystification of LIS research which is impregnated with an halo and cult almost mystical that far from motivating librarians both practical and teorethical to carry out research work in a daily basis, it plays an inhibitor role affecting not only the development of LIS research, but the LIS profession itself; this demystification implies that research could be for everyone who wants it to. It also argues that it is necessary to study in depth the epistemological debate in LIS to promote LIS research as a sub-discipline and the education and training of LIS researchers in order to transform such a plausible activity into an attractive one that becomes even a fun thing to do. The author considers that the examples of applicabilities of qualitative research in LIS given here, but which they could not be included in the published version due to the barriers impossed by the editors of Liber the journal of the Mexican Association of Librarians, are worthwhile to be known by the community interested in these methodologies and it is for them that this original draft is open to the public, thanks to the request of a colleague.
This draft, after many unexplained acts of negligence and censorship by the Chairs of the Mexican Association of Librarians and the other editors of their association journal Liber, during the period of 2004-2005, finally was partly published by this Peruvian journal:

Repositioning the information profession: why and how?

The talk delivered in the seminar on ‘Repositioning the information profession for the market place’ highlights the consequences of application ICT in libraries which in turn has caused the need for repositioning the profession. It appears that the roles and functions of both librarians and end-users are in transition. Identifying the trends as well as threats, the talk proposes some new roles/ functions of library professionals together with desired skills for fulfilling thes roles/functions. Also discusses the contents of programs for developing such skills among librarians to reposition the profession together with some do's and don’ts.

Throughout the past decade, distribution lists have proved to be an effective tool for articulating professional communication. In fact, they represent a first step towards virtual communities. A specific case —that of IweTel— is presented, including a description of its evolution and how it has been used by subscribers, through a content analysis of messages sent from 1998 to 2000. The study shows the list to be used mainly for professional communication and information exchange. However, it also reveals a surprising lack of active participation by those subscribed. Although the presence of list moderators has contributed to substantial improvements, there continues to be a troubling absence of scientific or academic content in the ongoing debates.

This paper evaluates the seminar on electronic librarianship organized by the Department of Librarianship of Hacettepe University from September 4-8, 2000. A total of 29 librarians coming from public, private and industry libraries participated in 17 sessions and 11 practica on various aspects of electronic librarianship. Majority of participants (81%) graded the seminar as "very good". This paper provides descriptive data about the questionnaire that was filled out by the participants after the seminar.

Este manual se suma a los esfuerzos que la Universidad ha desarrollado para poner a disposición del cuerpo académico, plataformas informáticas que den soporte al uso de TIC’s en la docencia presencial, y al desarrollo de contenidos digitales en apoyo de asignaturas
específicas. Especial cuidado se ha puesto en abrir el campo de aplicación de este manual a todas las plataformas.
La hipótesis es que articulando estas tres líneas de actuación, se logrará incrementar los niveles de aprendizaje significativo en los estudiantes tanto sobre los contenidos curriculares como en el logro de objetivos transversales. También mejorará significativamente la adquisición de competencia y habilidades para aprender a aprender, crear conocimiento colaborativamente en espacios virtuales, articular pensamiento crítico y creativo en forma escrita, habilidades de acceso y uso de información, entre otras.
El manual se divide en dos apartados. En el primer apartado se presentan los fundamentos de la acción docente universitaria en la Sociedad del Conocimiento. Analiza los cambios sociales, aborales y educativos que las TIC’s están generando. Revisa en forma sintética cómo las
teorías del aprendizaje se hacen cargo de estas transformaciones y cómo, ellas, a su vez, generan dentro de las universidades, un profundo cambio del papel del estudiante, del profesor, de los recursos didácticos y del rol de las bibliotecas. A esta sección se accede por la tabla de contenidos o por un mapa conceptual sensible al mouse, lo cual permite una lectura secuencial o directamente del apartado de su interés. Todas las secciones, las citas, las notas y los ejemplos están enlazados por hipervínculos. Ello le permitirá experimentar una fluida navegación por el texto, el enlace con el texto completo de los documentos citados, como la
visita a los sitios web de las instituciones y proyecto analizados a modo de ejemplo.
El segundo apartado corresponde a lo que hemos denominado recetas metodológicas, que son un conjunto de componentes didácticos que abarcan el empleo docente de herramientas
tecnológicas, metodologías de enseñanza activa, actividades docentes e indicaciones para la generación de materiales de apoyo. Estas cuatro categorías son una de las formas de acceder a los contenidos de este apartado. La segunda forma corresponde a lo que se ha denominado
línea del tiempo, ofreciendo el acceso a diferentes componentes didácticos de acuerdo al grado de avance del período lectivo. La tercera forma de acceder a los contenidos es por grado de dificultad de los diferentes componentes didácticos que se ofrecen. Obviamente, la cuarta alternativa corresponde a la lectura secuencial de ellos. Todas estas alternativas buscan ofrecer una forma sencilla, pertinente y oportuna de aproximarse a los diferentes componentes propuestos.

The introduction of informational skills in the framework of the higher education should keep in mind all the contexts in which those skills are going to be developed. The figure of the thematic librarian and trainer, should consider the real need of information of the student and to facilitate the integration of the abilities in the use and access to the information in his/her personal cognitive structure. The objective of this article is to present the role of the thematic librarian to train and to teach information skills.

In this paper we present the staff and user training program of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) Library System. The program took place within the framework of the Operational Project for Education & Initial Professional Training "Modernisation of the University Library System of AUTH". We present the specific educational activities, we refer to the problems faced during the planning, implementation and evaluation stages of the project as well as to the conclusions drawn. The staff training project included a series of seminars, lectures and workshops on a wide variety of subjects, as well as a one-week visit of seven librarians to UK libraries and the organization of a symposium. The user training project provided seminars for the use of all electronic resources available in AUTH, as well as online tutorials for the use of the automated catalogue, the CD-ROM databases and the Internet.

The explosion of information technology, with the continous production of new products which addressed to librarians and libraries, is affected and melted the necessary professional qualifications of the traditional librarian. This paper examines four alternative approaches of continuing education, the way that they are formed from the strategies of demand and offer. The modern librarian, during a continous process of self-development, have to be the education's transmitter and recipient.

In 1995 it was presented before the Commission of Labour Relations of the UNLP, a proposal of ideal structure of the Libraries of the Schools, which included an study of the current status of its personnel, a brief summary of the concept, mission and objectives of what academic library shold be a and a description of positions and functions. On the basis of that study, the following problems were detected: lack of professional personnel, non up to date professionals, lack of stable personnel and absence of a qualification program. In the present work a revision of existing literature was made on the subject and from it, a proposal was elaborated to contribute to the improvement of the situation descripted before, by means of the implementation of a Program of Permanente Capacitance(PCP). The proposal departures from the definition of goals and objectives of the libraries in which concerns the mission and ideal performance must fulfill its personnel, it confronts them with the real situation and identifies the necessities of training and qualification of the personnel.

Forty years of teaching Information Science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels has revealed that there is in fact a fundamental definition that can be used to describe the field and guide its development in the years to come. In short, that definition states "Information Science is the scholarly occupation that attempts to establish the principles and laws that govern the augmentation of human capacities through technology." This concept can be conveyed in teaching through the use of the EATPUTr system model. My long experience in the field has also revealed several basic requirements in the education of Information Science. These
requirements are discussed within the paper.
