JG. Digitization.
Within the framework of the agreement signed by UNAM and Google in 2007 to digitize the National University's collection of books, there needs to be a means of promoting UNAM's Biblioteca Digital (BiDi-UNAM), which has been digitizing its collection of bibliographic holdings dating from 1950 to the present. The early experiences of BiDi-UNAM, the use of its technical resources and staff, and its policy of open-access e-book production should be considered as a case study for the new digitization project (the 2007 agreement).

Librarians are the people having expertise in organisation
of universe of knowledge. As long as printed books on library shelves and journals titles in the racks will exist, librarians will continue to exist. You will have books on shelves in 2lst century also because you will still need to possess much of the material you are holding now and because you will need to support the browsing function. Most of your holdings will in fact still be in the form of print on paper, although the process by which it got onto paper will generally have involved a great deal more computer assistance than is the case at present.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the editorial behavior of the Cuban Journal of Health Information and Communication Professionals from 1993 to 2001. METHODS: Nine volumes of the printed version of the journal, published during the studied years, were revised to determine their work in relation to a group of indicators selected for their evaluation. The proposed indicators allowed to study the authors, the original articles, the bibliographic references and to originally evaluate the journal's work in the analyzed period. RESULTS: ACIMED published 318 contributions during the nine years analyzed. 84 (26.41 %) of them were original articles. Of the 157 authors that were identified, only a few were foreigners. While the volume of the magazine experienced a two-fold increase, the space dedicated to the research articles did not reach the values internationally stated for this indicator. In spite of the fact that the average of bibliographic references per original article was below the figure taken as a reference, the updating degree of the bibliography was adequate. The journal, as a result of the application of a strategy directed to its publication, is processed or referred to in several information services and websites on Internet. It occupies the ninth position among the 29 magazines published by "Ciencias Médicas" Publishing House, according to the number of accesses received. CONCLUSIONS: Both, the historic evolution and the current management from the editorial point of view of ACIMED show a positive development to the light of the indicators taken as a reference for the study.

The normalization is an essential dynamic and continuous process for the optimal operation of all organization and the obtaining of good economic results. The necessity to make the analysis and processing of documents, as much at national level as international, so that these are comprehensible and compatible to each other, is more and more urgent. With this aim, different international norms in the field from the documentation and the scientific information have been developed. It is in this sense that International Standard Organization (ISO) has like intention fundamental to promote (at world-wide level) the development of the normalization and compatible activities, with the objective to allow to the international product interchange and services in the industrial, commercial, scientific, technological, economic sectors and others.

The article treats the problems of the libraries and the libarrians which exist and offer services for a very long time. The new economic course imposed by the globalization converted the knowledge in a creator of wealth and in one of the most important intangible assets; this well is compilet, classified, stored and diffused by the librarians. The new technologies of the information and the communication imposed changes in the professional profile of the libarian, For such motive this new professional redefines himself from his own profession name to the knowledge, competence, abilities and aptitudes that he or she needs to acquire to be able to continue exercising his role in an optimum way. At the image of all these changes the high education institutions update ina constant way and dynamic the plans of study of these future professionals as well as induce to the ones that already have been received and exercise, to be brought up to date permanently

Međunarodni seminar Libraries In The Digital Age - LIDA 2004.
Faletar, Sanjica
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
The aim of the annual conference and course Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA), which started in 2000, is to address the changing and challenging environment for libraries and information systems and services in the digital world, with an emphasis on current problems, advances and solutions. Each year a different "hot" theme is addressed, divided in two parts: the first part covers research and development and the second addresses advances in applications and practice. LIDA seeks to bring together researchers, practitioners, and developers in a forum for personal exchanges, discussions, and learning, enhanced by being held in memorable locations.
LIDA is organized by Faculty of philosophy, University of J. J. Strossmeyer in Osijek, Croatia and Rutgers University, USA. Five times it has been held at Inter University Centre in the city of Dubrovnik and on nearby island of Mljet, Croatia. This year's Co-organizing University is Loughborough University, Great Britain (represented by professor Paul Sturges, PhD. ).

Open Access scholarly communication in South Africa: current status, significance, and the role for National Information Policy in the National System of Innovation

South African science shows a decline in its global competitiveness in that its scholarly publication rate has not kept pace with that of other countries, both developed and developing. This, together with a decline in publication rate especially among junior South African scholars, suggests a structural problem in the South African national system of innovation. A declining publication rate indicates a problem of knowledge diffusion for South Africa, and hints at a possible knowledge generation problem. This thesis limits itself to the dynamics of knowledge diffusion with specific reference to Open Access scholarly communication. Open Access scholarly communication is an overt intervention regarding knowledge diffusion. The marginalisation of science in and of developing countries, leading to a state of knowledge imperialism and knowledge dependence, is addressed, and it is argued that knowledge diffusion and generation are at the heart of long-term economic growth.
This thesis has been structured around two core sections, a theoretical framework based in the literature, and empirical study. The central concepts of scholarly communication and Open Access, national information policy (NIP), and national system of innovation (NSI) are elaborated upon in the theoretical framework (Chapters 2 and 3). The empirical part of this study (Chapters 4 and 5) in turn consist of two parts. Both parts used the survey method, however the first part made use of a questionnaire instrument, and the second part made use of a structured record review. Both empirical studies were used to assess levels of activity and extent of adoption of Open Access within a defined South African scholarly community, one discipline-based, the other institution-based.
The aims of this study were two-fold: to assess levels of awareness of and investment in Open Access modes of scholarly communication within defined scholarly communities; and to create a benchmark document of South Africa’s involvement to date in various Open Access initiatives. The argument is made for the openness of scholarly systems, and furthermore that the disparate and uncoordinated nature of Open Access in South Africa needs a policy intervention. The policy intervention so identified would exist within an enabling policy environment and would be minimally disruptive to the South African science system. Said policy intervention would constitute a National Information Policy since it would address the storage, dissemination, and retrieval of scholarly research output.
This thesis recommends the amendment of the current statutory reporting mechanism - used by scholars to report and obtain publication rate subsidies – which would require that scholars make their research available via an Open Access mode of scholarly communication, and moreover, would require scholars to report on having done so.

"Information Seeking or Information Literacy? Some Aspects of Training at the Department Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap of the Swedish University of Växjö"
The terms Information Seeking, Information Demands, Information Behaviour and Information Literacy are discussed from an international as well as Scandinavian point of view. Therefore the difference between Information Seek and Information Literacy is shown. Information Literacy is explained to be a personal characteristic dependend on the different surrounding environmental conditions. The field where this competence has to be taught is shown exemplary by a potential Information Seeking process of a student in a library. Here the librarian inheres a key role, focussing in a user- service provider- relationship on the information demands of the individual person and assisting to the search strategy. At the same time the librarian has to educate the library user regarding his information behavior. Concluding the author deals with the eligible type of persons, which could educate and train Information Literacy and furthermore how the term could be distributed in the international context.

Librarians need to be able to read critically published accounts of educational and training interventions (ETI) and to apply the results to their own practice. One mechanism for assisting library practitioners in doing this is the critical appraisal checklist. This article describes the process of developing such a checklist – involving a literature review of existing frameworks and experience in appraising such studies for a systematic review of information literacy skills training. The ReLIANT instrument is offered as a first attempt to equip library practitioners with a tool for use when appraising published reports of educational and training interventions.

This work has as a practical aim to design a system that enables searching technological information that provides knowledge about the process of production of functional juices which derivate from a series of nutraceuticals that they have been obtained from olive, rosemary and artichoke. So it has been performed through the next actions:
1. Diagnostic of searching and information retrieval systems in enterprises that produce juices. In this way it is analysed the initial situation on which to design an
advanced information system.
2. Elaboration of an adapted vocabulary to the technological domain about nutraceuticals in juices. This vocabulary will enables to carry out information searching.
3. To establish the previous situation to the information search about scientific and technological knowledge available so far and so, to specify the search domain and to avoid its semantic dispersion.
4. Evaluation and selection of the databases to use.
5. Evaluation and selection of the enterprises that are going to be used to provide the information for the study. There are included the principal producers of juice in the World, so it enables to watch the innovations that they carry out.
6. Collection of information from the pertinent databases. 7. To collect information from the activities of the sector enterprises. The result is that there is not a simple solution to carry out because the dispersion of information. Scientific publications about food technology and nutrition are good information sources to know particular results of investigations that are being carried out. Nevertheless, this is a difficult information source to manage by the enterprises. Although patents content exhaustive information about structure and protected inventions by the competitive enterprises they are relatively not much used in this technological domain. Nevertheless, an important quantity of relevant information for this sector is already available on the Internet. It is a positive fact as the improvements which are being carried out in internet search engines, including semantic functions and indexing increasingly databases on the deep web, as it can be predicted that this situation in which the information is so dispersed it is on the way to solve it soon. Recent improvements in the Alltheweb or Google search engines, as in the Vivisimo, Ixquick or Copernic meta search engines go on this direction. Juices are one of the foods which have a better perception among consumers because their healthy properties. Therefore juices are a suitable mean to add nutraceuticals to them in order to make them functional. Moreover food enterprises functional juices are an interesting product as they have a bigger
added value, technologically more complex and provide better
economic profit margins. The final conclusion of this work is that there exists a latent industrial demand of technologies related with the addition of natural nutraceuticals to the production of functional juices. Although the performed research investigation projects by CSIC and universities there exist a wide field to research which it can be transferred to industrial applications, since the major part of the national production of juices is focused on South Eastern Spain.

This Association was an important landmark in the librarian career in Brazil, as political organization of the professional library education. The methodology used in the original study makes the qualitative boarding of the reality. The source of collection of data was the collection of texts called \"documentos da ABEBD\". The data had been collected through a form standard, aiming at to rescue the speeches contained in the texts of the collection and, later, they had been dealt with as collective speech, adopting itself it technique of the Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo - DSC.

This study of 28 countries involves comparative content analysis of the English versions of codes of ethics proposed by professional associations. It yielded an empirically grounded typology of principles arranged in twenty categories. The most frequently identified principles were professional development, integrity, confidentiality or privacy, and free and equal access to information. While confidentiality and privacy, and equal access to information, appear in all existing typologies of library and information science ethics, other principles, such as copyright and intellectual property, democracy, and responsibility toward society, which appear in almost all other typologies, were evident in fewer than half of the codes. This empirical study provides a global perspective on library association code of ethics.

La indeterminación de la traducción archivística
Delgado-Gómez, Alejandro
DL. Archives.
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
Archival science is suffering a radical change, often written in English. For non English-speaking communities, this implies the need for a translation of the most relevant archival texts. However, this poses several challenges and difficulties: different disciplinary communities, different uses of terms by different English-speaking communities, and different understandings, associated to different national traditions. In this regard, this text suggests several examples, as well as potential risks derived from a bad or poor understanding. In the same way, it explores some of the answers proposed by archival researchers, particularly essays published by Eric Ketelaar. According to this background, and on the basis of the Quine’s theory of indeterminateness, this text suggests two approaches to the problem: a sound ethnographical study of socio-cultural environments associated to different archival terms and discourses, as well as a deep conceptual analysis of some of the most relevant concepts in modern archival science.

This article presents the results of a study carried out of the thirteen French blogs acknowledged by their authors as being biblioblogs by responding to the following criteria: discussing effectively the profession of librarian, and having at least one article published by month. It addresses notably the questions of style and content, and develops those of anonymity (much discouraged); and the tendency towards auto censorship and consensual generalities of blogs not included in this study.

In 2006 Hwang's fraudulent papers published in Science on stem cell research re-opened the debate on scientific misconduct. Taking this as a starting point, some reflections are put forward on the dimension of fraud in science. The singularity of Hwang's case, due to its scientific, social and media impact, is examined as a consequence of the persuasion mechanisms systematised in the so-called Routes of Scholarly Lying. Furthermore, the reasons for publishing fraudulent research, the inefficiency of peer review for detecting it, and the various mechanisms for managing and eradicating it, are presented.

Fearing the library dragon : Why librarians should approach users instead of waiting for them

The image of libraries and librarians in popular culture, press coverage and the public often does not live up to our expectations. Systematic management of public relations is expected to put things right. This article focuses on an important basis of reputation improvement: the interaction between academic librarians and students. It shows how the psychological phenomenon of library anxiety and the library profession's image are interconnected and includes recommendations for approaching patrons and public instead of waiting for them. The paper expresses personal views.

Research in Librarianship: Challenges, Competencies, and Strategies
Verzosa, Fe Angela M.
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
Research in librarianship, particularly within the context of the Philippine situation, is sad to say, very disappointing. Why, because there is really not much to talk about on research in Philippine Librarianship, outside of the realm of graduate work, or research pursued in connection with graduate studies. While our profession has an abundance of well-educated, well-trained professionals, it is sadly lacking in research-oriented librarians. Research has an important role in understanding the needs to which libraries should be responsive, and if librarians need to conduct research in order to better assess the effectiveness of their approaches to delivering library services, then librarians and other LIS professionals, including the agencies responsible for educating them, and their employing institutions, should be more attentive to such a critical activity as library research.

Theoretical and practical aspects of continuing education of the academic
librarians are considered in the paper. It is difficult to draw a border
among formal, continuing professional education and continuing personal
education of the librarians. But obviously, there is a strong relation
between formal and continuing education and it is more important than the
differences between the educational levels. Some experiences in the
continuing education of librarians in Russia are presented in order to
achieve a balanced development of the continuing education kinds in Serbia.
The kinds and forms of continuing education of academic and research
librarians are discussed as well as the results of a survey done in June 2004
at the University of Novi Sad which aim was collecting data about the most
frequent kinds of learning used by librarians at their working place.

This study deals with the impact Information Technology has been producing in the services promoted by libraries and documentation centers. It also presents the concept of content syndication, conveyed by the RSS formats (Really Simple Syndication), and it aims at identifying possible contributions to the work developed by the professionals who work in this area. Its main goal was to raise some RSS premises and its potential of use in dissemination of information services. After going through a bibliographical review around the topic, it was noticed that there was little production in the national literature as well as the lack of a set of considerations which can support the incorporation of emerging technologies, such as RSS, so that they can be evaluated and adopted efficiently inside the paradigm of the so called Library 2.0.

Historia de la Biblioteca Central de la Universidad de San Marcos: 1923 a 1966
Cajas, Antonio
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
FH. Reorganization.
DD. Academic libraries.
This thesis presents the history of the Central Library of San Marcos University between the years 1923 and 1966. This period was chosen because 1923 is an important year in the history of the library, when under the direction of Pedro S. Zulen there is a significant improvement in services made to the public.
Continuing forward 43 years, the history of the library is presented until the catastrophic earthquake of Oct.1966. This teluric movement required the transfer of students and teachers from the main building of the University (At that time in the Casona del Parque
Universitario) to the new recently constructed "University City". Unfortunately, after the relocation the Library is unable to continue offering services because there was no physical space for it in the new campus.
Ongoing development of the University library was then seriously limited by external and internal factors. The main external factor was the lack of autonomy of the university
with regards to the ever changing government. In this sense, each 'golpe de estado' (coup), meant the resignation of the rector and in turn, the disruption of the institutional politics by a new administration.
As to the internal factors, the Library lacked professional employees- librarians - with leadership abilities (with exceptions under the direction of Pedro Zulen and Jorge Basadre) and the absence of institutional support (including budget, salaries, physical space).
The main conclusion that can be drawn is that the Central Library languished with a series of unfinished projects, resulting from the adverse institutional factors.
Far from its users and in an urban environment deteriorating daily, the institution lost its role of central axis of librarian development of the university.

The results of a study of social networking by professors’ co-memberships in library and information science
PhD juries between 1993 and 2006 are presented. Degree reduction and k-core methods are used to extract sub-networks and a Ward’s hierarchical cluster analysis is performed. The resulting network identifies five classes, whose members are actors occupying similar social positions, and at the same time different mechanisms, based mainly in similarity and physical proximity, are proposed from the interpretative point of view.

"The Information Professional facing the impact of Search Technology" Transform everyone into an Information Professional?

LS. Search engines.
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
“Finding a needle in a haystack”, refers to the role of an Information Professional, but today it also points out the core function of the Search Technology. Is ‘Search’ taking over the differentiating task of the person that has always been in charge of managing the information or specialized in finding the right information, in the right place at the right time? Would an Information Professional become less professional if he or she would use a search engine? What is the future of an Information Professional if everybody can find the information they need by using Google or other Enterprise Search solutions? This research answers the questions: (1) What are the main tasks of an Information Professional and of Enterprise Search, (2) what is the impact of ES on the tasks of the IP, in terms of similarities and differences and (3) is this impact expected to change in the future? This paper draws up results which are crucial for the future of the Information Profession.

The International Effort Towards the Creation of an International Repository for Library and Information Science: Breaking Barriers in the Access to Scientific Research

HS. Repositories.
Established in 2003, E-LIS (http://eprints.rclis.org) is an international Open Archive for Library and Information Science (LIS). Over 9,000 papers have been archived to date. It is freely accessible, aligned with the Open Access movement and is a voluntary enterprise. E-LIS has grown to include a team of volunteer editors from 60 countries and support for 22 languages. It accepts published or unpublished documents in scientific or technical areas; authors can self-archive and a proxy service supports depositors. Metadata are set for each document type and are checked in accordance with editorial guidelines set by an international editorial committee and there are agreements with institutions and library associations in various countries. In few years, E-LIS has been established as the largest international open repository in the field of library and information science. Searching or browsing E-LIS is a kind of multilingual, multicultural experience, an example of what could be accomplished through open access archives to bring the peoples of the world together. Because librarians are so involved in open access advocacy, E-LIS is a key to encouraging open access for all repositories, by giving librarians the experience they need to speak with confidence when talking with researchers and open access archives, and the experience to provide the best possible assistance to self-archiving faculty. The mission of E-LIS is to remain international and world-wide: a place where people from all over the world can deposit their documents and contribute to the world-wide dissemination of knowledge: • to improve knowledge of the building and management of open archives working practically in the field within the framework of Open Digital Libraries; • not only to promote open archives in various disciplinary environments, but also to create a valid and credible model in LIS discipline for the building of a world Library and Information Science archive; • to establish a base for communal work between librarians information technology professionals, and to enhance the Open Access movement. The development of an international LIS network has been stimulated by the extension of the Open Access concept to LIS works and facilitated by the dissemination of material within the LIS community. These are some of the reasons for the success of E-LIS as an organizational model, which has been developed within a framework in compliance with OAI, and, exactly for this reason, it can be regarded as a tool for disseminating the OA philosophy. The invisibility of scholarship from countries so-called developing countries, such as African countries or India, was regarded as a fait accompli in the pre-Internet era. Nowadays, the discussion concerning the digital divide, scholars from these countries may disseminate their work via the networked services of digital repositories, such as E-LIS. Thanks to these projects, authors who contribute to an e-print archive are participating in a global effort by universities, researchers, libraries, publishers, editors, and readers to redefine the mechanisms of scholarly research. This e-print archive makes LIS research more visible, available, and relevant, which in turn increases its visibility, status, and public value. In E-LIS papers from 82 countries are currently deposited in 36 languages: Afrikaans, Basque, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Kannada, Malay, Malayalam, Maori, Nepali, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian.

With the aim of investigating the continuing education of librarians from public State
of Paraná universities, this research collected data of 35 librarians of five libraries. A
questionnaire was used to verify the type, way and frequency of continuing education
these librarians pursued and their attitude and satisfaction in regard to this form of
formation. The results seem to demonstrate that the professionals recognize that
continuing education is very important for their improvement and updating and it
makes a difference in their work, being a guarantee for qualification and permanence
in the labor market.

Librarians and Open Access: the case of E-LIS
Darries, Fatima
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
HS. Repositories.
The literature abounds with information on Open Access. Librarians rally to the cause as part of our responsibility of providing access to information. But what are librarians doing to further the cause of Open Access in their own discipline?
E-LIS, short for Eprints in Library and Information Science, aims to further the Open Access philosophy by making available papers in LIS and related fields. It is a free-access international repository and archive, in line with the Free Online Scholaship movement (FOS) and the Eprints movement. E-LIS was originally founded by Jose’Manuel Barrueco, Antonella De Robbio, Thomas Krichel and Imma Subirats Coll in 2003. E-LIS relies on the voluntary work of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
There are 64 editors from 42 countries across the world. The country editors for South Africa is Fatima Darries and Wynand van der Walt.
The purpose of the E-LIS archive is to make full texts documents visible, accessible, harvestable, searchable and useable by any potential user with access to the Internet. Librarians can search and archive their own publications and presentations in E-LIS free of charge.
E-LIS puts at the disposal of the LIS community not only metadata, but also full text documents which are freely visible, searchable, accessible, retrievable and using the full potential of the Internet.
E-LIS is for librarians and its librarians who use it thereby improving knowledge of the building and management of open archives, working practically in the field within the framework of Open Digital Libraries. It provides a platform to test and see how an open archive works and what its capabilities are.
Not only does it promote open archives in various disciplinary environments, but also create a valid and credible model in our own discipline for the building of a world LIS archive. E-LIS promotes self-archiving in LIS (not only in E-LIS) and offer an open archive to authors without acces to an institutional repository. And to those who do have an institutional repository it offers the added advantage of an archive that is discipline specific to LIS and increases the visibility for authors in a global respository.
E-LIS allows for the establish of a base for communal work between librarians information technology professionals, and to enhance the Open Access movement
E-LIS is the first international e-server in this subject area and resulted from the RCLIS (Research in Computing, Library and Information Science) project and the DoIS (Documents in Information Science), promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and hosted by AEPIC team on machines of the Italian Consorzio Interuniversitario Lombardo per Elaborazione Automatica (CILEA).
There are currently more than 9000 e-prints (research, articles and presentations) in the E-LIS archive. Having established its reputation as a credible repository, it is now also a source of information and has several, although basic, search options.

This paper explores the changing work environment in libraries and information management and the impact on new professionals and new graduates. New graduates need to have their own support networks and targeted professional development to successfully navigate job and sector changes and to gain transferable skills. The development and structure of a targeted professional development event, the New Librarians’ Symposium, is discussed. This successful event, held in Australia biennially, could be considered a model of targeted professional development for other professional associations and groups.

The internet leads to a change of communication spaces in which scientific discourse takes place. It is striking that the core medium of the German Information Science, the journal, is still dominated by the medium of paper. This way, opportunities of digital science communication are missed. The paper describes the status quo of the German information science communication and points to desiderata. Furthermore current developments in digital communication of science are presented. Based on this review, eight criteria that should characterize a future information science journal are given.

This paper seeks to bring the Spanish scope reflections and research that have been developed in other countries, especially in the Anglo-Saxon area in which to professional ethics in
Librarianship refers.
Arises, therefore, a research mainly historical or even for what might be called comparative library and also descriptive ethics, but also in this research an analysis shall activity library from a social perspective, and the own professional design of this activity. This double perspective, social and professional, is to emphasise the nature of public service that has the profession librarian, and social and professional responsibility therefore acquired by own occupation, responsibility repeatedly mentioned in the literature on professional ethics in library science.

Due to both the digitization of press archives and the
current financial, economic and journalistic recession, news libraries in online journalism need to re-invent themselves. While performing their traditional tasks, news librarians are developing new skills so that their activity will continue to be considered a necessary and natural component of quality journalism.

The librarian has expanded its areas of expertise beyond the traditional activities relating to the library. From the performance in the USA project that environmental education as a facilitator in the management of chemical waste, it was investigated as was the work of the librarian in this context. Given the environmental reality in which we live we need the cooperation of all professionals to ensuring a healthy environment for this and future generations. Thus, UFSCar to have a program for management of chemical waste that is used for environmental education, it is important to face the variety of waste generated by it, the development of its activities. From a case study it was possible to understand information needs and develop educational materials printed for distribution in the fields of UFSCar. This study has concluded that the librarian not only can here as has the powers to act in projects for environmental education. His role should expand beyond the role as an intermediary to process information for the space you take it as interactor, both with the producer of information on who uses it.

E-ciencia: aplicación de la web social a la investigación y a la edición científica
Zapata-Ros, Miguel

In this paper, the social web as a work context for scientific research and the methodological features accrued to researchers by those work contexts are analyzed. Asociated concepts to e-Science, Science 2.0 and Shared Science and their characteristics are proposed. Virtual Research Environments (VREs) are defined and analyzed taking into account their historical development since the first primitive environments based on messaging service and gopher, up to the current ones that use social web tools and services, focusing on the features accrued to VREs by the social web as regards the shared nature of science and research. Special emphasis on support to digital scientific edition is made -mainly on peer review- and a proposal for revision through social networks is made. On this point, some of the most frequent objections -mainly on experimental areas- are mentioned. The coincidence of methods and objectives between these environments and those of the revisions in Social Sciences in which Formative Research has more relevance are also analyzed. Furthermore, in this sense the meaning, importance and possibility of having live information from a research beyond what is published and that is on the cloud stand out. Finally, the paper concludes with the need for suppport from agencies and research institutions to open edition as well as toVREs infrastructure and digital edition in environments with standards for communication in the social network as regards funding and projects.

A Tiresome Exercise, or a First Step in Library Leadership?
Johnson, Ian M.
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
This paper reviews the challenges facing librarians and other information specialists in terms of employers’ expectations, and how the necessary skills could be developed in professional education. It focuses on the role of writing in professional education and in library leadership. The paper emphasises how written work submitted during professional education not only enriches subject knowledge, but also enhances time-management skills and could embed a reflective, evidenced-based approach to professional practice, develop advocacy skills, and underpin efforts to enhance personal professional standing. The papers submitted for the competition organised annually since 1996 by the journal Libri for the best paper recently completed by a student are considered, and the subsequent careers of some of the early winners are discussed on the basis of information available on the web.

The article presents the results of the research with same name, whose objective was to identify and determine the role of librarians as characters of the development of public libraries in Medellín, showing their relations with the history and educative and cultural tradition of the city. Based on a qualitative focus and with the development of documental research techniques, the paper does, first, a historical contextualization of the librarian profession in Colombia, with reference to the political, social, and cultural projects that were developed in the broad temporary frame, to view the history of librarians in Medellín. The second part traces the propagation strategy for illustrated reading in the dissemination of useful reading. This model, predominant in the XVIII century in Europe, finds in Colombia an interesting example with the profusion of magazines and newspapers, of religious character or guided towards the dissemination of determined moral perspectives and, of course, the creation of libraries that configure the role of librarians and their relations with the educative and cultural tradition of Medellín.

This essay is the winner of the 2012 Jean Arnot Memorial Fellowship. The essay draws on Rose Holley's experience of managing innovative library services that engage crowds such as The Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program and Trove, and her ongoing research into library, archive and museum crowdsourcing projects. This experience and knowledge has been put into the context of Jean Arnot’s values and visions for Australian libraries. Jean Arnot, the distinguished Australian librarian, described her vision for an innovative library service over sixty years ago. Rose suggests how some of her goals are now being achieved through use of the internet and digital technologies, and how we can build on these to ensure that libraries remain valued and relevant by harnessing the cognitive surplus of the nation they serve, and by crowdsourcing.

The situation of university libraries in front of the current problematic situation of radical changes in the library profession and of intense general economic crisis is described. Internet, digitalization, mobile web, social networks and other technologies require librarians to diversify in many ways, and at the same time these technologies disconnect them from the main flow of information, leaving their classical role as intermediaries. Their survival should be based on cooperation with other departments and institutions, and assuming new tasks such as advising researchers, curating data, and promoting open data, open access and repositories, and more.

In this paper we describe the basis for building a theoretical model of learning and knowledge processing, from online learning environments. This will leave a critical view of connectivism, and a basic premise: the recognition and study of the contributions of existing theories, the scope is yet to be developed in accordance with the powers of the social environments and ubiquitous. We will do some reflection on why this phenomenon occurs at the current stage of development, the Sociedaddel Knowledge and Information for at a later stage using the findings as the basis of the new model.

On the occasion of twentieth anniversary of the foundation of the Escuela Universitaria de Biblioteconomía y Documentación (EUBD) of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), we expose the statistical information on his student body. We calculate the number of men and women who, along three study plans of the Diploma of Higher Education’s that were in use (1991, 1994 and 2000), have happened for his classrooms. With the numerical results, we think about the Gender Studies and Equality in the above-mentioned studies and this institution.

GZ. None of these, but in this section.
The objective of this article is to propose accessibility to information as a discipline for helping librarians to render services to disabled people in university libraries. The main topics are access to information; historical aspects of accessibility; legislation on disabled people; and attributions of librarians rendering services to the university community. Two programs about accessibility to Brazilian universities were analyzed: Program of Accessibility of PUC-Campinas (ProAces) and Laboratory of Accessbility of Unicamp (LAB). These programs are a reference in literature of this area and are used as a basis for proposing this discipline. Barriers were found and solutions presented for making the access to information easier for disabled people. An exploratory and descriptive analysis based mainly on bibliographic research and visits to accessible libraries.

Uma discussão acerca do papel da aprendizagem organizacional na formação de competências

GZ. None of these, but in this section.
The dynamics of the new socioeconomic scenario, as defi ned by the technological development, has been causing transition from a model based on individual efficiency to another based on collective effi ciency. In this context, organization learning is displayed as a process which furnishes generation of knowledge, capabilities and competencies for the organizations. This paper is based on arguments that knowledge is the most important resource for the entrepreneurial competitiveness, and that the theories about organizational learning contribute to its origin. Organizational learning interacts with knowledge through theoretical constructions as for instance competencies and training, which are defi ned on an organizational level. The objective of this paper is to study the relations existing between the processes of organizational learning and formation of development of organizational competencies, in the context of management of operations. These relations are consolidated by a theoretical conceptual framework. A qualitative approach was used for research based on information obtained from experts and on the utilization of information from a project of development and implantation of a corporative model for strategic knowledge management. The main conclusion of this paper is the refi nement and application of a framework which defi nes the relations between the process of organizational learning and the formation and development of competencies which are established on the organizational level. In the context created by the strategic management of operations, learning establishes the process by which resources are mobilized. This mobilization, however, is intervened by organizational competencies.

The interdisciplinarity of the information science (IS) is discussed in the view of the students from several areas of knowledge that had entered in the Post-Graduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI, in Portuguese) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in 2007 and 2008, in the perspective argues to advance in its practice as researchers, to revise concepts, to strengthen, to refute, or to create new theories. It methodology searched a quantiqualitative approach to express the opinion of the students in IS of the PPGCI/UFMG. The results show the information as research object, the theoretical foundations of IS and its interdisciplinarity provide a new dialogic view of the area. The future information scientists originating of other areas of knowledge can collaborate with the IS identifying theories and methods that come to consolidate the interdisciplinarity.

GZ. None of these, but in this section.
This paper informs the Spanish information and documentation professionals on a new tool called IweTel. It is the first permanent electronic communication teleconference in Spain on Information and Documentation. Launched in November 1993 by the journal INFORMATION WORLD EN ESPAÑOL, IweTel is supported by Swets & Zeitlinger, an editorial and subscription management company based in the Netherlands. The technical infrastructure is provided by SPRITEL, a telematic network of value-added services.
IweTel is a discussion forum in which participants place their messages in a common mailbox, which is accessible to all service users. To participate online in the forum users connect to Euskom, the SPRITEL email and teleconference system, through Internet, X.25 or Switched Telephone Network.
Moreover, the conference has an associated listserv email that can deliver messages via the Internet to any mailbox anywhere in the world.
In IweTel there are discussions on a variety of topics: news about databases, experience with the CD-ROM, networks, library automation packages, curricula, scanning documents, status of information professionals, meetings, seminars, conferences, jobs, or any other kind of personal reflection on our work area.
The following pages describe the operation and development of this teleconference during their first months of life. According to the authors, this type of service can be an important stimulus to facilitate electronic communication within the Spanish information and documentation community.
Finally we present the IWE Directory of Spanish librarians and information experts.

Social media and professional networking: a case of information professionals in the SCECSAL region
Chisenga, Justin
Chande-Mallya, Rehema
GZ. None of these, but in this section.
The purpose of the study was to establish the extent to which library and information professionals in the Standing Conference of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa Library and Information Associations (SCECSAL) region are using social media applications for professional networking. The findings show that although the professionals are adopting social media applications, its use is more for social networking than professional networking purposes. Among those using the applications for professional networking, Social Networking Services (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and MySpace) are their first choice applications; with Facebook being the most popular. They study also revealed that most of the professionals had taught themselves how to use social media. The major challenge faced in the use of social media was the lack of time in the effective use of the applications. The paper recommends that to enhance the use of social media for professional networking, social media must be integrated into individual networking activities and that library and information professionals and associations in the region should embrace social media applications.
